Ethan Hawke Says He Came Close To Playing DOCTOR STRANGE

We know Benedict Cumberbatch will suit up as Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme in their Doctor Strange adaptation, but several other actors were linked to the role before he won it, and one of them (Boyhood's Ethan Hawke) reckons he came "as close as anybody could"...

Ethan Hawke was a fan-favourite choice to play Doctor Strange since before the movie was even officially announced, and when Scott Derrickson landed the directing gig, many figured he might look to his Sinister star to step into the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. Before we found out that Cumberbatch would don the cape and goatee officially, Hawke's name was mentioned in connection with the part, but we never actually heard anything concrete about that until now. Hawke was a guest on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, and revealed to them that he came “as close as anybody could” to playing the good Doctor. But even though Strange may be off the table, would Hawke be interested in a different Marvel role perhaps? It certainly sounds like he'd consider it, as he discusses the studio's movie-making process with MTV. "There’s a tremendous amount of salesmanship that’s now really important to a studio like that,” he said. "It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and you’re not acting. We’re living in the age of Marvel .... They’re making movies at a high rate, and they’re making them successfully. I’m totally open to doing something like that." Have a listen for yourselves at the link below. How do you think Hawke would have done as Doctor Strange? Could you see him as another Marvel character?

And Lol at ppl saying Cumberbatch is in everything. He has only had 2 lead roles.

- He was a CGI dragon; his face got zero screen-time
- He delivered on such an underwritten character in Star Trek
- Had minor/supporting roles in War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (one of the best films in this century), 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County
- Had lead roles in the weak The Fifth Estate and this year's The Imitation Game

I also don't think he's been overused but he's been in quite a few successful and critically acclaimed movies

You know we're living in the "Age of Marvel" when actors/actresses always bring it up in interviews when talking about the current state of the film industry, for better or worse.

@NoPhucksGiven Yeah, very true. We do need to see one more Brady v Manning before one of them retires.

Cumberbatch is in no way overused. Not yet at least. He's just very popular right now, and very good when he has a role.

Hawke is only 44 and looks 58. Jared Leto is 43 and looks 28.

@ManDeth Don't forget about Paul Rudd. Leto and him definitely made deals with the devil.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in another role. I saw him in an episode of Alias... (I think).

He was the guy she knew from the past and then found out he was evil? I think he was called the Snowman or something?

Anyway, I can't really judge his acting ability so if people say he's good, yeah I'd like to see him in another role. Not sure what though. He should probably play an older character though.

Cumberbatch just seems overused, but in reality he is not. If he were, we'd see him in a situation similar to the Gerard Butler era where that cat was in just about every movie over a couple year span.

Every once in a while, stars and starlets go through oversaturation periods where they seem to be in everything that comes out...and mostly due to at least one major hit behind them, so they get deemed "hot property" for a while.

Cumberbatch is just starting to hit a stride like that. Like I said, nowhere near as saturated as Butler back in the day, but he may get there.

As far as Hawke vs. Cumberbatch...I'm glad it went to Cumberbatch. I enjoy a lot of Ethan Hawke's roles over his career, but I couldn't see him as Doctor Strange. He has the chops, but it would be like a square peg in a round hole.

I can't wait to see what Marvel has in store for his treatment on screen.

Hawke is good, but Cumberbatch is on a roll! Marvel are masters and they know exactly what they're doing. Doctor Strange will be unlike any other superhero film and Cumberbatch will own!

Cumberbatch was my first choice and at least the very least this should put a stop to those annoying fan casts that cast him as everything.

Seriously though, Cumberbatch is a great actor. I can't wait for a scene with RDJ, Tom Hiddleston, and Cumberbatch. That scene would just be hilarious to write.

@EzioKenway1225 I give an exception to Keanu because he is...The One. :)

But seriously, John Wick is one of the best American action flicks in recent memory.

@dmm5 A shitty script does that.

@FordEl Overused? Because he's an experienced theater actor who has delivered in all his roles. Better great actors being overused than your Kellan Lutz, Liam Hemsworths, Taylor Kitschs, etc
