Ethan Hawke Says He Came Close To Playing DOCTOR STRANGE
We know Benedict Cumberbatch will suit up as Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme in their Doctor Strange adaptation, but several other actors were linked to the role before he won it, and one of them (Boyhood's Ethan Hawke) reckons he came "as close as anybody could"...
Ethan Hawke was a fan-favourite choice to play Doctor Strange since before the movie was even officially announced, and when Scott Derrickson landed the directing gig, many figured he might look to his Sinister star to step into the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. Before we found out that Cumberbatch would don the cape and goatee officially, Hawke's name was mentioned in connection with the part, but we never actually heard anything concrete about that until now. Hawke was a guest on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, and revealed to them that he came “as close as anybody could” to playing the good Doctor. But even though Strange may be off the table, would Hawke be interested in a different Marvel role perhaps? It certainly sounds like he'd consider it, as he discusses the studio's movie-making process with MTV. "There’s a tremendous amount of salesmanship that’s now really important to a studio like that,” he said. "It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and you’re not acting. We’re living in the age of Marvel .... They’re making movies at a high rate, and they’re making them successfully. I’m totally open to doing something like that."
