Director Sam Raimi Gives Production Update On DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was reported to have undergone extensive reshoots late last year. Now, the film's director, Sam Raimi, has provided an update on its production status.

Late last year, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would undergo extensive reshoots (approximately six weeks of filming). The significance of this additional photography was questioned by some of THR's sources, while it worried others. Nevertheless, the trade stated that an insider had indicated the reshoots were not due to concerns over the film's plot. Either way, fans were left wondering whether or not Doctor Strange's sequel was in any sort of trouble.

The reason behind these reshoots remains largely unclear, but Deadline reported in early January that the project had concluded filming. Now, Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Drag Me to Hell) has offered some more information about the movie.

While promoting an upcoming horror short film he produced, Variety asked Raimi about In the Multiverse of Madness' production. The filmmaker understandably kept things relatively vague and didn't appear to address the reshoots directly. He did, however, offer the following when asked if the Doctor Strange follow-up had finished filming:

"I wish I knew the answer to that question. [...] I think we're done, but we just cut everything. We're just starting to test the picture and we'll find out if there's anything that's got to be picked up. If something's unclear or [there's] another improvement I can make in this short amount of time left, I'll do it. One thing I know about the Marvel team is they won't stop. They’ll keep pushing it until it's as close to being great as it could."

Raimi elaborated, praising Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige for their collaborative nature:

"Marvel’s been a great team to work with, [...] I think that was a not-surprising surprise. I've been super-supported by the whole Marvel operations, starting at the top with Kevin Feige, and working all the way down to the crews that they work with. [They're] super professional and have supported me every step of the way."

Shortly after the reshoots were revealed to be happening during an interview with Empire Magazine (via SYFY), Benedict Cumberbatch explained the reason for getting cameras rolling once again:

"We're in the middle of reshoots and we're working incredible hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film — bits we want to do better, but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because logistics, COVID, etc. [...] We were so delayed in production, because of that. Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower."

It's important to mention that restructuring films after test screenings is a common practice in Hollywood. Age of Ultron, for example, famously removed a Loki appearance from Thor's Scarlet Witch-induced hallucination because test audiences had gotten confused by his appearance, thinking the God of Mischief was the real villain behind the film.

Regardless, reshoots — even those as extensive as In the Multiverse of Madness' are reported to be — shouldn't necessarily be a cause for concern. There are many moving parts required to finish any type of production, and it's easy to run into a creative wall that requires a change of course every now and then. Ultimately, it's clear that Marvel Studios and the people behind In the Multiverse of Madness are working hard to, as Raimi put it, make it as good as it can be.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022.

@bobevanz - if it was just Raimi doing his original take on Doctor Strange from the first film I'd have 100% faith.... him coming in just to do a sequel, and a No Way Home sequel at that.... for the MCU.... has me a little worried.

@bobevanz -
It's probably going to suck as Strange is no longer the focus in his own film - which is why Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill both quit.

@Scarilian - like Taika once said: if the movie is called Thor he should be the most interesting character in the movie.

Hope the rumored X men and Fantastic Four variants are not true

Should not use variants of characters who havent been introduced yet it will just cheapen their eventual introduction

With the Spiderman villains they made it clear none of them are getting redone

No way they arent going to do mcu versions of wolverine, professor x and the fantastic four

@dracula - Yeah, i hope strange has a Lot of development because it looks crowded for a sequel of a solo film, at least it hopefully sets up the multiverse for a secret wars film evwntually

@dracula - No Way Home just showed them nostalgia is a money maker, I wouldn't be surprised if they did it for the money..

Wonder how much of this is under Raimi’s control, remember the last time a studio forced him to use a character he wasnt interested in

@dracula - id like to know how raimis spiderman 3 wouldve work out, because if You take venom out and still kill Harry then theres no redemption to sandman

@dracula - I know! I hope his vision hasn’t been compromised too much because it sounds more like he’s only there for the great shots and they aren’t letting him have much input in the story and characters :/

@Dannywest - would have involved Vulture instead of Venom, would have connected him to sandman early on by making them cellmates

eddie would have been a character but not become venom

@dracula - The implication has been of Spider-Man 3 (Pre-Venom):

-Sandman and Vulture are the villains
-Vulture is the asshole mastermind villain. Sandman is the more sympathetic one (has nothing to do with Uncle Ben, also).
- No black suit, but a lot of Peter's journey in the film was supposed to be about over-coming black and white thinking/self-righeteousness. "I'm the good guy, you're the bad guy" type stuff.
- Harry wouldn't have suited up until the very end. His arc throughout the movie would've been one of internal conflict, and ultimately he would choose to forgive Peter/help him fight the tag-team fight at the end against Vulture and Sandman.

However the movie turns out, I would hope that people are kind to Raimi either way. He took the Spider-Man 3 hate very hard, and him coming back to this sort of project took a lot on his part.

@MosquitoFarmer - hopefully this isn't like a Batfleck situation and Raimi actually gets redemption coming back to comics book movies.

Me refusing to believe Sam Raimi would make the same mistake twice is the only reason why I have some expectations regarding this movie, because everything surrounding it sounds bad, 6 weeks of re-shoots (which can be more) sound bad, the leaks sound bad, Marvel Studios learning all the wrong lessons from NWH sound bad...
However, I refuse to believe Sam is making the exact same mistakes he made in 2007, when he went overtime and overbudget adding stuff he didnt want but the studio kept demanding to his movie (and I still think Spiderman 3 is a great film, but in a different league than the previous two).

I personally think they should start marketing this movie with Sam Raimi, because I know I'm not the only one giving this movie a chance only because of him...and is not like he is infallible, Drag me to Hell was [frick]ing bad, and the last movie he directed, was almost a decade ago...

Still, in short, IN SAM WE TRUST

@TheHumanSpider2 - Drag Me to Hell was actually, in fact, [frick]ing awesome

@JFerguson - For Raimi standards??? it sucked. Even Oz was just "ok" for someone like Raimi.
I think filming Spiderman 3 "broke" him.
I hope he managed to "fix" himself in this movie.

@TheHumanSpider2 - To play Devil's Advocate though, we know Sam dislikes Venom. He may not have a problem with what Marvel Studios asked him to include in reshoots, so it wouldn't the "same" mistake... even if the end result felt that way to audiences.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/25/2022, 8:10 PM
@DalekCraigWasson - We actually dont know until the movie comes out.
Back in 2007, Raimi wasnt walking around saying "[frick] Venom", we learned about the issues between him and Sony after the movie came out, and the critical and audiences response wasnt so good (movie was a commercial hit, though).
Heck, he was still attached to a sequel both him and Amy Pascal knew wasnt going to happen, but every time he was asked about Spiderman 4, he would reply "we are working on it".

@TheHumanSpider2 - the ONLY reason??? 🤨 So you wouldn't watch Dr. Strange 2 if anyone else was directing?
👁 📞 🐃 💩!
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/25/2022, 8:49 PM
@tripttwe - Probably not.
Same reason why I'm watching Ragnarok 2 because of Taika, or Guardians 3 because of Gunn, or The Batman because of Reeves.
I'm a bit tired of seeing the exact same movie over and over again, and those three are probably the last three directors with a clear unique voice working in the genre.
