Spider-Man: No Way Home did the impossible by bringing Tobey Maguire back as Peter Parker. The actor has had nothing but good things to say about his brief stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while many fans have campaigned to #MakeTASM3 happen, there are plenty of people out there who would prefer to pick up with Maguire's web-slinger in Spider-Man 4.
With original Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi at the helm of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the hope is that the hero could swing into the sequel for a surprise cameo.
Talking to Fandango, the filmmaker didn't comment on that, but was asked if there's a chance he and Maguire could team up for more Spider-Man movies. "I've come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don't really have a story or a plan."
"I don't know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don't know what their thoughts are about that. I haven't really pursued that," he continued. "But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie, I'd love to work with Tobey again, in a different role."
As for whether he'd be open to telling more stories in the MCU, Raimi responded, "Absolutely. It's like the world's best toy box to be able to play at Marvel. I'd love to come back and tell another tale, especially with the great management they've got there." Clearly, he enjoyed his Marvel Studios experience...and probably quite a bit more than his time working with Sony on Spider-Man 3!
Spider-Man 4 does seem unlikely, but if Maguire doesn't show up as Spider-Man in the Doctor Strange sequel, it would be a real missed opportunity. Ultimately, it could boil down to whether Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures were able to come to an agreement that would allow a cameo like that to happen.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters on May 6.
