Last night, Marvel Studios unleashed a jaw-dropping new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While original director Scott Derrickson left the sequel over "creative differences" with Marvel Studios, it's clear legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi has been allowed to bring his own unique vision to a movie that will explore the Multiverse and deliver some horror-inspired visuals.

Talking to Empire Online, star Benedict Cumberbatch explains, "Once it became Sam, it was always about making it a Sam Raimi picture. Your head’s going to be spun."

The actor is coming off the back of Spider-Man: No Way Home's unbelievable box office success (it's so far grossed $1.8 billion worldwide), and shared an interesting exchange with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "I think when Kevin Feige first said, ‘We’ll know about the future of cinema, or the cinemagoing experience, after this film,’ I was like, ‘Okay, everyone’s drinking too much of the Kool-Aid around here,’" the actor admitted. "My ignorance was showed up."

The site has also shared a new image from the sequel showcasing Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez meeting with Doctor Strange and Wong in less than glamourous settings! We're not entirely sure what's happening here, but it could be the aftermath of Gargantos' attack on New York.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on May 6.

I had doubts until this trailer. Raimi got his prints on it

Still a little concerned that the movie may go too over-the-top with all of the multiversal cameos and easter eggs, but it's Sam Raimi's return to film after ten years so how can I not be excited?

"Okay, everyone’s drinking too much of the Kool-Aid around here" - kinda funny to think about in retrospect. Wonder what his predictions are for this film.

He has expressed it previously.

“He was an assured pair of hands, who knew that world. He’s got certain Raimi traits. The smashed-zoom close-up. The mixture of just on the level of horror and just on the level of camp.”

I can't post the Tweet itself because this website is really sucking at the moment.

Most excited I've been for a Marvel film in ages.

I'm a Raimi-skeptic. I enjoy some of the campy stuff in some contexts (and I certainly admire the craftsmanship his previous crews have put in with practical effects), but I never felt like he gelled with the superhero genre. Raimi movies always felt too self-aware, too-artificial... something like that. Even when my high school buddies were raving about Evil Dead, it mostly just rubbed me the wrong way. (I don't want to get into an argument about it, though: like what you like.)

This trailer didn't give me any of that feeling, though. Maybe it's having a big budget. Maybe it's having a lot of the cast already established in their roles. Maybe it's modern CGI compared to special effects from 20 years ago. Maybe the Marvel folks provided a supportive environment that another studio didn't. Whatever I was afraid of, I didn't see it here.

I'm glad that the Raimi fans are liking what they're seeing, because I do, too. This was probably my least anticipated MCU project before, but I'm kind of leaning toward excited.

@Spock0Clock - because it’s still
An MCU film more than it is a Raimi film. The story was already there prior to him and Waldron coming on. You’re gut reaction is accurate here.

@Spock0Clock - "I never felt like he gelled with the superhero genre. Raimi movies always felt too self-aware, too-artificial..."

Even if it were true (which it most certainly isn't), I fail to see why would those aspects not make Raimi the perfect MCU director. I feel like a self-awareness and robotic approach to storytelling is one of the reasons people like MCU, no?

But to argue with this sentiment, I really have a hard time believing Raimi is either of those things, as subjective as those critiques are. Self-awareness was definitely something his Spider-Man movies did not have. Raimi was one step behind becoming as pragmatic and self-serious as Christopher Nolan. He definitely sees superheroes as more than people with powers, and he doesn't puke fun at the premise of the characters the same way the MCU does, where they can't even let a character have a silly name without someone commenting on how silly it is. And regarding his films being artificial... His films have always had sincerity to them, and they were also told with a style that's his own. So artificial Raimi is not.

It's gonna be a Raimi film in name only. Poor guy got Spider-Man 3-d again.
