DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer Wanted Tom Cruise To Play Iron Man

One of the more hard-to-believe rumors relating to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse claimed that Tom Cruise had been enlisted to play The Superior Iron Man, and writer Michael Waldron has now weighed in.

Countless rumors did the rounds prior to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with online scoopers reporting that everyone from Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider were being lined up for cameos.

One of the more persistent rumors claimed that Tom Cruise was set to appear as an Iron Man Variant, and while that (obviously) never came to pass, it sounds like the idea of bringing the Mission: Impossible megastar in was briefly tossed around.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, screenwriter Michael Waldron was asked about the reports, and said that while the rumor that Cruise had been cast as The Superior Iron Man was "totally made up," he did ask Kevin Feige if it might be possible.

"I mean, there’s no cut footage of Tom Cruise! But I love Tom Cruise, and I said to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] at one point, I was like, Could we get Tom Cruise’s Iron Man? I remember reading about that in Ain’t It Cool News back in the day, that Tom Cruise was going to be Iron Man."

Waldron went on to clarify that, as far as he's aware, nobody actually reached out to Cruise since it was never an option "because of availability."

So, it seems there may have been something to this particular rumor after all, and it makes us wonder if anything was shot with other actors that didn't appear in the finished film. It's difficult to imagine Marvel Studios bringing in a big-name star for a couple of scenes and then cutting them from the movie, but you never know.

Hopefully, we'll learn more over the next few weeks, and we'll keep our fingers crossed for a couple of surprising deleted scenes on the Blu-ray.

See this movie did not get into the multi-verse very much other than flying through a kaleidoscope of universes, But I don’t necessarily think that was bad. And I think there’s always something to complain about, let’s put it like this, right now more people are saying oh no they threw away Reed and Xavier. If Tom Cruise were on this movie, they would be saying oh no, they’re setting up Tom cruise as Iron Man.

Well I guess that depends on whether or not they killed him. Thus nullifying my point. Carry on

@TheWalkingCuban - hey where’s the Wayward Son response? Y’all saw it? I saw it

@TheWalkingCuban - I don’t get the complaints about “throwing away Reed & Xavier.” Because obviously when The Phoenix disintegrated Charles in 2006 that was the very last time we ever saw Patrick Stewart in the role, right?

Who thinks death in pop culture media is permanent? It used to be the only death that counted was a corporate one; a reboot or copyright exchange. But now, in a world of Keaton Batman Returns, No Way Home Parkers? Frick, even real death couldn’t keep Tarkin & Leia coming back.

So I’m sure Marvel “wasted” Reeds because this is for sure promise a real comic death 😏

Knowing Cruise, he would have wanted a full mechanical armor and performed stunts with it like jumping from a plane.

@MV081199 - that would have been awesome! im super excited for MI:7

Wait, considering they never reached out to him, how is availability an issue? Unless they were seriously prioritizing black bolt from the inhumans show over Tom cruise?

WruceBayne - 5/10/2022, 8:14 AM
@Origame - I think Cruise is still shooting that last Mission: Impossible movie. And I’m sure Anson Mount wasn’t doing much of anything at the time they wanted him to film. Lol

@WruceBayne - I guess. Still seems weird they just concluded he wasn't available without contacting him. Especially since it would've been green screened and they would cgi a suit on him.

@Origame - wasn't he busy shooting the last two MI movies the entirety of covid? And it's not like he was having the greatest of times while shooting.

@Chuck420Taylor - but they didn't even reach out to him. Besides, it's a green screened cameo. He could've done that in his lunch break.

I'm pretty sure he was supposed to be there instead of Captain Marvel.

@TheyDont - well they used a lot of what was introduced in Disney+, which included a powered up monica and references to her mother and having a beef with carol... so i can see carol or monica, etc was intended in some form the whole time and not a variant of iron man.

Schedules didn't line up for three years? He couldn't come in for an hour lol. Another missed opportunity, the money hungry business model is starting to show from the Mouse, vfx first and story maybe

For the best Scarlett Witch would have decimated Tom Cruise and Iron Man. Like she did to the entire Illuminati.

Black Bolt "What mouth?"

Whole battle was awesome.

I’m kinda glad this didn’t happen. With no offence meant to RDJ if I saw Tom Cruise is a version of Iron Man I’d probably walk away wishing he’d had the role from the start
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 5/10/2022, 9:02 AM
@Twenty23Three - Not sure there would be a MCU with Cruise as Iron Man from the start.

The stuff/improv that Downey, Jr. and Johnny Depp did with such bland written parts in in both IM and Pirates basically pulled victory from the jaws of defeat.

I feel Cruise (while amazing) would have given you a much more stick to the script version of Stark and I’m not sure the MCU Action-Comedy formula would have been created.

Maybe Tom Cruise has one of those ridiculous contract niche’s that says “He can’t ever be bested by an adversary”.

@DarthOmega - his production company probably would have been contracted in too and that means the action sequences would have been absolutely bananas
JonC
JonC - 5/10/2022, 12:20 PM
@WruceBayne - Tom's company couldn't afford to do the things Marvel does in CGI but do them instead in live action... just ain't gonna happen. Marvel can't even afford that.
The bigger question is whether his ego would have ever let Wanda kill his version of iron man.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 5/10/2022, 12:46 PM
@JonC - you don’t think Tom Cruise’s production company could afford 150 million dollar budget (that’s what Iron Man 1 cost)?
And you think it’s cheaper to do it live action than CGI? The insurance on Tom Cruise alone cost more than the cost of ALL the CGI it took to bring Iron man to life in the first one.
Now I do agree with you about his ego though. I don’t think Tom Cruise had been killed since “Interview with a Vampire”.

I’m a little suspicious that they were trying to do this. Seems the Cap Marvel sequences and action could have been mapped out and replaced.

I was initially disappointed when I saw that there were no other big cameos from previous movies. Then I remembered that this movie was supposed to come out before No Way home. In order it would have been this, Loki and then No way home which would have had the biggest cameos so far. It would have been a build up. No Way Home was always going to be tough to beat but I think the hype for that movie hurt expectations for this one imo. When viewed in that order I see how the self contained multiverse movie works. Unfortunately it seems a little anticlimactic since it came after No Way Home.
