Elizabeth Olsen Reveals DOCTOR STRANGE 2 Writers Had No Idea What Was Happening In WANDAVISION

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Elizabeth Olsen has confirmed what we've long suspected by revealing that the sequel's writers hadn't watched WandaVision when they were penning the sequel.

WandaVision ended with Wanda Maximoff becoming the Scarlet Witch. While a post-credits scene hinted at the Avenger heading down a dark path, the character's portrayal in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was jarring, to say the least.

Now, Elizabeth Olsen has confirmed what we all suspected by revealing that the movie's writers (presumably referring to Michael Waldron as he was the only credited scribe) hadn't even seen WandaVision when they were penning the Doctor Strange sequel.

"It’s a similar arc in 'Multiverse of Madness' that it is in 'WandaVision,'" the actress tells Vanity Fair"There could be parallel stories being told there of dealing with grief and loss. Well, I proposed that to the writers who wrote 'Multiverse of Madness?' [laughs]. I said, ‘Do you know what we’re doing in 'WandaVision'? Have you seen it?’ And no, they had not seen it because it wasn’t finished yet."

"So I had to try and, I don’t know, play it differently, right? I had to attack the same themes in order for it to be interesting for me," Olsen continued, "and potentially for the audience. I just had to come at it from a different point of view so that it wasn’t repetitive."

While the Scarlet Witch's descent into villainy mostly worked, it remains one of Marvel Studios' most divisive creative decisions in the Multiverse Saga.

It probably won't be that difficult to redeem Wanda for her actions, especially after she destroyed every copy of the Darkhold. However, the fact she brutally murdered Earth-838's superheroes surely can't be forgiven that easily!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness went through a variety of changes while cameras were still rolling, hence why it didn't necessarily feel that much like a Sam Raimi movie. The sequel has also come under fire for essentially ignoring the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home despite the fact it was there Strange first encountered the dangers of the Multiverse.

Olsen is expected to return as the Scarlet Witch in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, though her MCU future hasn't been confirmed yet.

It's sad to see this franchise go from greatness to absolute dog 💩 in one phase.

Not being in tune with a product that features the setup cast is beyond stupid.

The possibility of this story was great. The outcome: exact opposite.

@VictorAlonzo - Yeah, the last bit is so true for many recent Marvel projects, especially MoM and L&T.

They had all the ingredients to cook a great meal but went with the cheap fastfood...

They didn't see it because it wasn't finished? Sure, Fine. But surely at that time the scripts for Wandavision were finished and could've been given to the MoM crew, right? At least they could've been told the direction they were heading in?

As much as I enjoyed Wanda as the villain in MoM, her going from "I didn't want to hurt the people of this town" to "I will kill every creature to get America Chavez's powers" because she was "corrupted by the Darkhold (?)" off-screen was jarring as [frick], and that's not how you want to start your movie.

@Fares - see people think theres all these significant processes in place to bring movies together.. but olsen jsut exposed the fact they literally dont have a clue what theyre doing. its insane they had no visibility of what was happening in wandavision.

also how did you enjoy her as the villian? you jsut explained yourself how her motivation wasnt organic. why cant a woman be an out and out villian? no excuses.. no-for my family blah blah.. make her a villian.

@iceballsreborn - "also how did you enjoy her as the villian?"

It was just fun watching her chew the scenery and go through people hacking and slashing like the Doom Slayer. Her motivations might have been lacking, but everything else was fun to watch.

If we were just introduced to Wanda in that movie, and she was just that kind of villain, I wouldn't have many complaints. But we've known her for several years now, and she was a much different person, so there needed to be an organic transition between the person she was and the person she is now to have a complete enjoyment of her portrayal in MoM.

@Fares - Despite being written mostly as a cackling wicked witch villain, she gave it her all and it's rapturous to watch, especially when she has the moment of realisation at the end. Tour De Force, despite the lack of script.

Same for Sam Raimi too, he directed the heck out of those 120 all-but-blank pages.

In general, I haven’t been that impressed with the Disney+ Marvel writers, and it’s not encouraging that Marvel is bringing them over into the films.

This is less on the writers and more on the people that planned the scheduling of these projects and how directly connected they're supposed to be. I liked MOM though. I think it's a bit extra people complaining about the Black Bolt thing.

Yeah, it was basically the same plot arc, she turned evil and dangerous because she was suffering aftrt a loss and then stopped harming other people basically in the last minute, however she could still receive some sympathy from the viewer after the Wandavision events, not so much after MoM.

Now her character is basically ruined after being turned into an homicidal psycho. I guess the writers thought they could pull a Dark Phoenix on her but in my opinion it didn't work very well, specially considering that she was the one who created her twin sons using her own powers so she really shouldn't need to go to other timelines/universes and kill everybody there to get them back, she could have just used her own powers again?

That was pretty evident. There wasn't a shred of her character development to be found in Doc Strange 2. And Vision not being mentioned once in the film was one of the biggest red flags.

Well, that guy who kept insisting it was the studio at fault for the writing is confirmed wrong. Doubt the studio made him ignore the series his movie was a direct continuation of.

i enjoyed the movie for what it was, and wanada as the villian was great...with that said this movie had soooooo much potential to be something special and it was a massive let down in that respect

I liked Dr. Strange MOM. I am very interested to see what Strange & Clea are up to in the MCU future.

Annihilus? Dormammu return? helping deal with Galactus? Mephisto? Many possibilities here.

I know I wasn't the only one to call this, but I held out hope that I was wrong. MoM clearly had no coordination with Wandavision despite being marketed as a direct follow up to that series. So much of the character was a retread of the struggles that Wanda went through in Wandavision and without clear communication between these productions, its no suprise that we got such an uneven portrayal of the character.

Let's hope that they have learned from these early Disney+ mistakes. I know that Leaks are scary for studios and folks fear the Marvel Snipers, but this points out that the Stars of the pictures are getting stifled by the secrecy. They are trying to play dynamic characters--not caricatures.

@TheRose - People who are adapting comics' characters and stories that have been around for decades shouldn't be so concerned with leaking spoilers. Just make good adaptations. People who aren't into this stuff will still be wowed if you do it right and do it well. That should be more important than us knowing where the story's going.

Stop trying to outwit us, just tell the damn story.

The more that comes out about this movie behind the scenes, the more of an accident it sounds how it managed to work at all...

...and that's coming from someone who still unapologetically loves it, warts and all.

...wtf? What was the point of having these companion shows if you weren't going to make it mandatory for your writers to know about them? It might be time for Feige to retire because what is going on?
