WandaVision ended with Wanda Maximoff becoming the Scarlet Witch. While a post-credits scene hinted at the Avenger heading down a dark path, the character's portrayal in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was jarring, to say the least.
Now, Elizabeth Olsen has confirmed what we all suspected by revealing that the movie's writers (presumably referring to Michael Waldron as he was the only credited scribe) hadn't even seen WandaVision when they were penning the Doctor Strange sequel.
"It’s a similar arc in 'Multiverse of Madness' that it is in 'WandaVision,'" the actress tells Vanity Fair. "There could be parallel stories being told there of dealing with grief and loss. Well, I proposed that to the writers who wrote 'Multiverse of Madness?' [laughs]. I said, ‘Do you know what we’re doing in 'WandaVision'? Have you seen it?’ And no, they had not seen it because it wasn’t finished yet."
"So I had to try and, I don’t know, play it differently, right? I had to attack the same themes in order for it to be interesting for me," Olsen continued, "and potentially for the audience. I just had to come at it from a different point of view so that it wasn’t repetitive."
While the Scarlet Witch's descent into villainy mostly worked, it remains one of Marvel Studios' most divisive creative decisions in the Multiverse Saga.
It probably won't be that difficult to redeem Wanda for her actions, especially after she destroyed every copy of the Darkhold. However, the fact she brutally murdered Earth-838's superheroes surely can't be forgiven that easily!
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness went through a variety of changes while cameras were still rolling, hence why it didn't necessarily feel that much like a Sam Raimi movie. The sequel has also come under fire for essentially ignoring the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home despite the fact it was there Strange first encountered the dangers of the Multiverse.
Olsen is expected to return as the Scarlet Witch in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, though her MCU future hasn't been confirmed yet.
