Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE Promises "Girls, Explosions, Multiple Dimensions" And More At D23
Marvel Studios just kicked off its presentation at Disney's D23 Expo with a Doctor Strange preview that includes concept art of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme and more exciting elements, plus some promising words from the actor as well as Kevin Feige.
The D23 Expo is well underway, and Disney just kicked off its "Worlds, Galaxies, and Universes" panel with updates on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More specifically, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige first discussed the long-awaited Doctor Strange adaptation and he finally confirmed that actor Chiwetel Ejiofor will play Baron Mordo while Tilda Swinton will play The Ancient One.
Leading man Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Dr. Stephen Strange, could not attend the panel, but Marvel had screened a pre-recorded video featuring the English actor promising "get girls, cars, explosions, and astral projections into multiple universes; The usual fare." among other things. And afterwards, there was a slew of Doctor Strange conceptual artwork shown. Now thanks to EW and others, we have descriptions of everything regarding the Sorcerer Supreme's cinematic debut.
"The goal is to continue expanding what a comic book movie is, what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is," said Kevin Feige. "The comics traverse these dimensions, and film by film, we try to do that in a cinematic way. It’s going to be as satisfying as any movie made, and as weird as any movie we’ve made," added the producer. In Benedict Cumberbatch's intro video, the Doctor Strange star says, "He’s an extraordinary character, brings in a whole other dimension—hmm, multiple dimensions—to the Marvel universe" As for the concept, read the descriptions below!
Images in the concept art reel reveal the classic origin story: a wounded surgeon seeking alternate ways to heal his destroyed hands finds his way to a mystical Eastern sanctuary that leads him to an order that holds the keys to another dimension. [We see] cars levitated into the air; buildings turning over Inception-style, Benedict Cumberbatch in the red cape. Tilda and Chiewetel in costume, bizarre otherworldly dimensions. Insane colors. No creatures, alas. But there will be. Final shot of [concept art shows]: Strange [with gray temples] doing energy blasts from his hands. grey temples. Also of note, the art for The Ancient One was an old asian dude. Pre-Swinton casting or are we getting something weird? What do you think?
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Stephen Strange) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Baron Mordo), with Tilda Swinton (Ancient One) on board, Doctor Strange will be released on November 4, 2016.
