I'd like to start off the article by saying that Ant-Man was great! I only found a few flaws with the film. My current order of Marvel films (from favorite to "I'm never watching that again") is now:
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Avengers
4. Ant-Man
5. Iron Man
6. Avengers: Age of Ultron
7. Iron Man 3
8. Thor
9. Iron Man 2
10. Captain America: The First Avenger
11. Thor: The Dark World
Jesus, what have I done. Now the entire comment section will be about the list and not the contents of the article. Oh well.
So in case you didn't get it by the title, thumbnail, description, or big [donkey slur] picture above, the character hinted at in the end of Ant-Man is Doctor Stephen Strange. Scott's journey in to the Quantum Realm was one of my favorite parts of the film. Maybe that's because of my affinity for trippy-shiz, but it was visually stunning regardless. So how do I know this points to Doctor Strange other than the fact that in his earlier comics it looked like Steve Ditko just drew what he saw while on acid? Feige himself.
Speaking to Cinema Blend's Eric Eisenberg, Feige had this to say about the Quantum Realm:
"If you look up the study of quantum mechanics, when you get down that small, as Hank Pym says, space time is meaningless, and there’s a lot of that stuff that applies to Doctor Strange. So this is sort of an appetizer for, ‘If you think this is weird…’"
He also said the the entire crux of Doc Strange(love) is that other dimensions exist, and that the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man is
"essentially the tip of the iceberg for the stuff in Strange."
So who is Doctor Strange supposed to be saving? Janet Van Dyne of course. Hanky Pym's wife who sacrificed a normal life for floating aimless in a realm outside of time and space to save the world. When I first saw the film I thought that Scott or Hope could go back and save her since they now know how to escape the Quantum Realm, but then I shot that idea down. The realm (althought sub atomic) is large and (although time doesn't mean anything there) it would take a long time to find Janet. So who better to retrieve Ms. Van Dyne than Stephen Strange? He could probably locate her much faster, and retrieve her from the realm without even having to enter.
But Kong, why would he do that?!?!?!
Well it could be something as simple as a favor for Hank or they may even need her in the battle against Thanos in Infinity War Part 1, Part 2, or both!
But Kong, what would the reprecussions be?!?!?!?
Due to time not being existent in the Quantum Realm, Janet would come out the same age she was when she went in. So, we'd have a Janet only a couple years older than her daughter, and MUCH younger than her husband. Although Michael Douglass is no stranger to having women much younger than him, it still might be a little weird in the MCU. But that could provide for an interesting dynamic in an Ant-Man sequel.
Janet's mental state might have also deteriorated since 1987 when she went Quantum. However, Scott was not able to remember the Quantum Realm because of the human mind's inability to comprehend the experience. She very well could return to our realm and her last memory could be riding on that missile.
Thanks for checking out my shortest article ever. Comment in the usual place (like you have a choice) and make sure to give it a thumbs up and share!
