ETERNALS Writer Reveals Whether [SPOILER] Is Really Dead After The Movie's Shocking Ending

Eternals writer Kaz Firpo has shared some insight into whether one of the movie's characters actually died in those final few minutes, and the answer may not be the one many of you were hoping for...

In the final act of Eternals, it was revealed that Ikaris killed Ajak and was aware of Arishem's plan for a new Celestial, Tiamut, to emerge from Earth (destroying it in the process). Ultimately, Ikaris couldn't bring himself to deliver a killing blow to Sersi and helped his fellow immortals stop the emergence before seemingly flying into the sun to end his own life.

Some fans have questioned whether Ikaris actually died; we didn't technically see his demise, and there's surely a chance the hero turned villain changed his mind or was even stopped by Arishem.

Nope.

Talking to CBR, writer Kaz Firpo confirmed that Ikaris is dead and gone. "What is the melting point of an Eternal? How long does it take to literally melt an Eternal robot? For what it's worth...yeah, it was always that. He can't bear to face his family after what he's done, which he realizes."

"I don't think that Ikaris even thinks that he's wrong," the Eternals screenwriter continued. "I think that he just has so much regret. He's very sorry. I think he's sorry for the way he lived his whole life on this planet, and that's a lot of burden to carry. So really, that act is basically saying, 'I made a mistake, but I can't face my family, and I can't go on living.'"

"It began as an exile that I think, throughout the course of the filmmaking, really became something that needed to be definitive. It really is a moment of saying, 'It's sacrifice.; It's sort of saying, 'I can't serve the Eternals. If I can't serve the Celestials, and I can't be with my family, then I choose this third option,' which -- for him -- really is oblivion. So yeah, he dead."

It definitely sounds like there was a version of Eternals where Ikaris lived, but it's easy enough to understand why the story went in this direction instead. We can't help but be disappointed that Richard Madden was a one and done in the MCU, but flashbacks likely mean he can still return in some form.

I feel dumb for only just now realizing the whole "Ikaris flew too close to the sun" thing. It's a little too cute now that I see it, but doesn't spoil the character for me at all. Loved him and what Madden did with it.

(And if you've read the comics, you know that death isn't really a permanent thing for an Eternal.)

Off Topic kind of.

Sun wouldn't kill the Hulk day at the beach for him. Been on the Sun surface many times even to fight the Sun God.

World War Hulk took the Sentry's full blast of million exploding Suns and didn't slow him down. Just made him stronger gave us Worldbreaker Hulk.

@Kurban - Captain Marvel has never been a threat or could beat the Hulk in the comics. Even teamed up with the all the Avengers she and all the Avengers lose.

@SpideyQuad - bingo, Hulk was suffocated by Ghost Rider’s smoke flames back in the day, there is little consistency in comics over the course of 60+ years.

@Kurban - MCU Hulk done and had a lot of things done to him no one else could do or survive including MCU Captain Marvel or Thor. MCU Captain Marvel and Thor both can be killed, big weakness. MCU Hulk can't be killed even in the MCU.

1) Bullets and especially from heavy artillery like tanks and jets.
MCU Captain Marvel not bullet proof.
2) Bombs, Fire and bullets like from Black Hawk helicopter in the
Incredible Hulk movie.
3) Entire building being collapsed on her. Age of Ultron.
4) The SNAP Captain Marvel would be toast and dead like Iron-Man.
Russo's confirmed Hulk was the only hero who could SNAP and
live. Now it looks like Hulk / Banner is fully healed in She-Hulk.
5) Fenris Wolf bite through the legs stomach in Thor Ragnarok.
Hulk was fully healed when he jumps back by Thor on the bridge.
6) MCU Hulk has healing powers no one in the MCU does including
Captain Marvel.
