**** I WOULD LIKE - to start out saying this article has nothing to do with me hating on Marvel. ****

MARVEL is my favorite, all the films, Actors everything! There is just one thing i wish the films had better, And that is the Villains.

The only two Villains that i actually thought were sick, and remembered was Iron Monger in the first 'Iron Man'

and the Abomination in 'The Incredible Hulk'.

I know I'll probably get hate for this, but it is just an opinion, And honestly kind of the sad truth.. Nolan has better villains, and Marvel can too!

I feel like maybe Marvel is rushed with they're films, (not what i actually think, but just an idea) so they pick a villain, give him a back-story and bam! Everyone will love him till the next Avengers (or first) came/come out, with even a bigger baddie then before.

See why Christopher Nolan's villains are probably so good, is because he really re-creates something that already exists and adds his own thing to it, for example.

- JOKER

1. the Joker's makeup.

2. Always referring to how he got his scares.

3. The Joker's voice (unlike cartoons or previous films - also changed by Nolan)

And many other details, and these details and small character development make these villains so loved and remembered and Marvel should be able to leave that impression with they're villains too.

- BANE

1. Every-time someone is talking about Bane and he shows up he says "Speak of the Devil and he shall appear"

2. Crazy remembered voice that everybody tries to do equally as good as the film.

3. He's actually a bad ass.

Now i didn't like Harvey Dent/Two Face in the film because he was in it for like a second as Two Face..

But my point is, If the Film is good or not, everybody leaves Nolan's Dark Knight films with the Villain in they're heads, Re-saying lines, Trying to do the Joker/Bane accent or make up, or costumes.. Chris Nolan almost makes you like his Villains more than Batman and that's the kind of thing Marvel needs to get better at.

Marvel movies are great because they are action-packed with awesome drama, and actually funny Comedy. And they have Robert Downey Jr.. But just imagine if they're villains were purely original, and just super awesome, Marvel would be even better and that's hard to do.

Now I'm not saying Nolan's films are better then all of MCU all i am saying is the Villains are.

So i don't know if its Kevin Fiege, or the Director of the film (it is the director of the film) but they need to think it through more.

I do agree, personally, Marvel's villains do feel a little 'Freak of the Week', maybe aside from Loki who has had buildup, back-story, and doesn't vanish after one movie.

I would like to see a villain maybe built-up over several movies for one of the heroes.

Although in relation to Bane and Joker I think it is a couple of factors that make them better. One maybe the 'darker' tone of these movies which meant a villain could do more violent or evil deeds, whereas the Marvel brand is defo lighter and more kid friendly (Which is not a bad thing), but does mean villains can't cross a line that would make then more interesting and sinister to watch.

It's a trend I ntoiced, and its what ultimately seperates MArvel and DC. Marvel focuses more on heroes and their realtionships with friends/family/loved ones, and DC focuses on superheroes and their relationships with villains and other costumed characters.

Personally I'd rather see Superman and his conflict with Zod and Krypton in general, or Batman fighting an uphill battle for the heart of gotham, than how Tony is trying to protect pepper, or how sad Cap is without Peggy.

You never saw something interesting between Thor and Malekith, or Tony and Killian, or Cap and Red Skull, or Tony and Whiplash

Ultron will be Marvel's best movie villain by far, I'm certain.

Abomination and Iron Monger were good, Loki was great. The rest range from kinda sorta okay to completely trash.

The thing is there is really nothing wrong with the characters, it's that Marvel treats them poorly. All of them except for Hammer had the potential to be great but Marvel butchers them. Red Skull in my opinion is arguably the best villain that Marvel currently owns the rights to, but they butchered the film version and gave some watered down pussy without a coherent story or plot. Who then randomly decides to disintegrate himself in the middle of a lame fight. Whiplash apparently was great, but all the footage was cut and it leaves him as this neutered half baked guy who loses in like 30 seconds. The Mandarin is Iron Man's most iconic villain, and they share a lot of interesting tales together but no...Malekith is a good Thor villain, but Marvel does absolutely nothing interesting or cool with the character.

They could be great, but Marvel won't allow them to be. Which is why I really don't trust Marvel Studios with Winter Soldier who is also one of my favorites.

@LMB
People said the same thing abou Malekith and Mandarin too...I'm not saying he won't be good, I'm saying wait for the movie before you judge th villain.

I agree with the sentiment.

All of it really depends on what they choose to do with the characters. I know this year has been a huge disappointment so far simply because they have such great actors to call from.

Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, AND Christopher Eccleston.

We're talking Ghandi, Leonard, and the 9th Doctor.

And they all gave something extremely EXTREMELY reserved. It's so strange, because Eccleston has done wacky and animated before, and that's exactly what Malekith should have been.... while the Mandarin... well if you switch the energy around, Eccleston might have actually been better off there.

---

I don't think we need to care about these villains. I think we need to see them do some awesomely evil things, goofy perhaps, but they need to be seen enjoying themselves in their dastardly deeds.

Street Fighter was a godawful movie, but it also had Raul Julia being fantastic.

Does Marvel need it's own M Bison? It couldn't hurt, but I'm just suggesting larger than life personalities.

I definitely agree with this, in general, specifically as it relates to Marvel Studios (not so much Fox/Sony). They've had some decent ones, and I personally felt that Iron Man 3 was really good in the villain department. Tony had personal history with Killian.

But the Dark Elves felt far too generic and impersonal to me in Thor:TDW and the Chitauri were the clear weak link in The Avengers, in my opinion.

I'm looking forward to Ultron, but what really matters most to me is character development. There does not have to be a big, scary monster threatening to blow up your planet; personal and interpersonal relationships are even more powerful sources of drama. Hopefully CA:TWS lives up to its trailer.

Agreed! Aside from Loki they've had pretty weak villains.

I agree with this article. I'm hoping we'll get better Marvel villains in the future. The best villain so far would have to be Loki. I didnt mind Iron Monger or The Abomination.

I thought Thor: TDW would showcase more of Malekith.

I reckon Winter Soldier, Ronan, Collector, Ultron, Nebula and Thanos will be awesome villains. Oh and Baron Strucker!
