With the release of The Dark Knight Rises tracking numbers Thursday it is time to consider the movie's box office potential

Christopher Nolan has created an abominable box office monster a beast whose purpose is to destroy records and embarrass 3D films. The Dark Knight Rises is on course by conservative estimates to gross between $150-170 million which will put it on par to beating the boy wizard's 3D opening weekend total of $169 million. These estimates will likely be the floor of The Dark Knight Rises potential box office totals which according to the LA Times TDKR is polling slightly ahead of The Dark Knight in interest among likely movie goers. Think about The Dark Knight if it was released today it would make $175 million adjusted for ticket price inflation and if interest in TDKR is greater than its predecessor there can be no doubt that it will make close to or more than $180 million.

Even though The Dark Knight Rises is tracking slightly behind The Avengers it is better to be optimistic about it box office potential then skeptical because of the weekend that the movie debuts. On this weekend in July last year Harry Potter broke the midnight opening record by grossing $43.5 million on its way to a truly magical $92.1 million opening day and four years ago The Dark Knight destroyed the previous opening weekend record by grossing $158 million and the same thing can happen to The Dark Knight Rises. The perfect storm or what I like to call Christmas in July for a movie like TDKR is when higher than normal monthly theater attendance caused by blockbusters such as The Amazing Spiderman and Ice Age combines with glowing reviews and millions of students out of school for the summer as well as the tens of millions of people on vacation in July helps a mega blockbuster topple box office records. Think of it like a hurricane when warmer than normal ocean temps with a stationary high pressure system transforms a normal category 3 hurricane into the perfect storm with winds exceeding 200 mph. This metaphorically speaking can be The Dark Knight Rises at the box in July which is why I believe that it will break The Avengers opening weekend record but either way it will certainly be close.

With three weeks left before The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters anticipation for the film is so incredible high fans are ready to demand that Warner Brothers release the film early and expectations are mounting after each new TV spot as well as new details about the film is released. Now entering into the home stretch for the movie expect the studio to dramatically ramp up its marketing campaign in fact a fourth final trailer will be shown when The Amazing Spiderman debuts July 3 and expect that to appear online Monday. The point is that three weeks is more than enough time for Warner Brothers to raise the level of excitement among the general public and whip desperate fans who waited four long years for an opportunity to see this film into a madding frenzy. So anyone who discounts The Dark Knight chances at breaking the opening weekend record is ignorant of the high demand for this film and the demand that could be generated for it in less than a month. Box office analyst and fans of Nolan's Batman series know that you can never count out Gotham's dark knight, with the marketing for the film set to hit a fever pitch, the first reviews of them film coming in just over two weeks also the celebration of the film's success, talks of another academy award and the gloating that will come after July 20th has every DC fan echoing Bane's words to Gotham "let the games begin".

First film to break $50 million opening weekend: Batman Forever (June 1995)
First film to break $100 million opening weekend: Spider-Man (May 2002)
First film to break $150 million opening weekend: Spider-Man 3 (May 2007)
First film to break $200 million opening weekend: The Avengers (May 2012)

CBMs for the win.

Considering inflation hasn't had time to kick in, nor does TDKR have the added boost of 3D, it is unlikely that it breaks The Avengers record. I believe it will come in somewhere between $170-$195 million for opening weekend.

It's going to reach $1 billion. The high demand is undeniable. The AMC marathon alone as sold about 23,000 tickets which is heavily on track of topping the Ultimate Marvel Movie Marathon. The biggest theater chain in the world(Regal) also trying to meet demands. It's a guaranteed billion.

Will it make more than Avengers? That remains to be seen, but even if TDKR doesn't top Avengers's opening weekend, it will be extremely close($195-200 million at the most). Either way, I think it's a lock for the biggest non-3D opening ever which is quite a feat.

The Dark Knight Rises

June 29, 2012

"July 2012 is finally here, and with it comes what is easily one of the most-anticipated movies ever. On July 20, audiences will pack their way in to theaters to see The Dark Knight Rises, which is the final installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. Initial grosses from that movie, combined with revenue from The Amazing Spider-Man and Ice Age: Continental Drift, should make for one of the biggest months ever, though with only seven new releases it may be tough to beat July 2011's record-setting $1.4 billion.

Four years ago, The Dark Knight set an opening weekend record with $158.4 million, and eventually closed in second place on the all-time chart with $533.3 million (since then, its opening weekend record has been surpassed twice, and its total now ranks fourth all-time). It has also enjoyed a very healthy second life on DVD/Blu-ray/TV, and it's hard to find someone who hasn't seen the movie. In fact, The Dark Knight has the second-most votes ever on IMDb (718,000), and its 8.9 rating places it at number eight on the site's Top 250 list. What's important to notice among these data points is that, to put it simply, a lot of people have seen The Dark Knight, and a lot of people have liked it. Add in its cliffhanger of an ending, and there were feverish levels of anticipation for a sequel the minute the credits began.

Still, there has been some concern about the box office potential of The Dark Knight Rises, most of which revolves around Bane and Catwoman being unworthy successors to Heath Ledger's Joker. Those doubts have been largely assuaged by Warner Bros. astute marketing campaign: the studio has gone above and beyond to show that Bane is Batman's toughest physical adversary yet, and one of the teaser posters even suggests Batman is defeated at some point. Add in the tagline "The Legend Ends" and the ensuing speculation that Bruce Wayne may not survive the movie, and this is shaping up to be a nearly-unprecedented movie-going event.

A big boon to Dark Knight Rises grosses will be additional IMAX revenue. The Dark Knight only opened at 94 IMAX locations, and since then the large format screens have tripled in number in North America. With roughly an hour of IMAX footage (compared to The Dark Knight's 40 minutes or so), The Dark Knight Rises will likely sell out IMAX theaters for the better part of its nearly-two-month exclusive window.

Even with this IMAX boost, it may be tough to top The Avengers's record debut ($207.4 million) or its overall haul (on track for at least $620 million). But initial tracking suggests that the movie will debut higher than its predecessor ($158.4 million), and if it turns out to be a worthy follow-up, look out."

If there is any big blockbuster that can reach very closely or even top Avengers's opening weekend records, it's TDKR.

I don't get this whole it needs better marketing thing. I see tv spots for TDKR everytime I turn on the tv. The viral campaign has been huge. Let's review... It started with the first teaser (which won the golden trailer award btw) then we got the strange CIA documents regarding Dr. Pavel via twitter which lead to the viral countdown website which began reading off coordinates across the globe which turned out to be IMAX locations for the Prologue viewings (which received enormous praise itself and pretty much stole MI4's thunder). Then there was the viral site which reviled the first teaser poster. And then there was the trailer 2 (my personal favorite). Then there all the documents regarding the Batman investigation. Then there was the international bat symbol hunt which had people all over the world searching their cities for little chalk drawings of a bat and posting their pictures to twitter unlocking trailer 3 frame by frame. All there other various documents about Harvey Dent Fay and Lucious's letter to Bruce followed by Bruce's reply. The mountain dew campaign which not only created a viral site revealing all sorts of tid bits about the movie including a Gotham Newspaper, but they also made a new MD flavor specifically for TDKR. The Chrysler trailer contest, the t-shirt design contest. All the posters that poured out of the official TDKR Facebook page. The Tumbler and Bat-pod doing a cross country tour visiting various cities. Thefirerises.com that turned out the be a playable game. I'm sure I've even left out many things. People who trash TDKR's marketing campaign either have very a very bad memory or they have this unrealistic level of marketing that could not even be reached by a presidential campaign. TDKR has had by far the best and most unique marketing this summer and if I'm wrong, by all means give me a better list from another movie.
