PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 May Be A Soft Reboot; Orlando Bloom In Talks To Return

While promoting the last Hobbit adventure, Orlando Bloom, who played Will Turner in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, took a few moments to share an update on the upcoming fifth installment in Disney's billion-dollar Pirates franchise. Come check it out!

While promoting his latest release, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies, star Orlando Bloom took a few moments to share an update on Disney's upcoming fifth Pirates of the Caribbean adventure. While he doesn't confirm that he'll actually be in the film, he does say that talks for him to return are currenly ongoing, which means a return is more likely than not. Bloom also goes on to add that the fifth film may in fact be a soft reboot of sorts shifting the focus from the characters of the original trilogy to a whole new set of characters, including his son, who we caught a glimpse of during the post-credits scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Read Bloom's full comments below:

"I’m not entirely sure that [I'll be back] just yet, but there are talks," he said. "Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son.

I’m of course Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me. [Gestures to face] Get all gnarly."

If what Bloom said proves to be true, this may mean that the coveted role won by Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) may be that of Will Turner's son, which would also mean that the fifth film may take place more than a few (possibly 10-20) years after the third and fourth films ended. Take that last bit with a grain of salt as it is currently just speculation.

In another bit of Pirates 5 news, Variety has learned the names of five young actresses currently testing to be the love interest for Thwaites' character. The actresses are as follows: Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Gabriella Wilde (Carrie), Jenna Thiam (The Returned), Alexandra Dowling (Game of Thrones), & Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter).

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is expected to hit theaters July 7, 2017 and will feature the return of Johnny Depp (Public Enemies) as Captain Jack Sparrow. New additions to the franchise include Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), who will play the villainous Captain Brand. The duo of Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg is set to direct.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales releases July 7, 2017.

That's actually a fantastic idea. And I would really love to see a GOOD new Pirates movie. The last two were disappointing.

Garrr, I hoped these were done. Taking away theater space from something that could be good.

I quite liked Orlando Bloom's character in the Pirates' films. In my opinion, On Stranger Tides really suffered without him and Kierra Knightely. They were the heart of the franchise. Depp is phenomenal in the movies, but Penelope Cruz really bogged him down. She's awful in everything.

I'm all for a reboot of sorts, especially if it has more focus on Bloom as the Davy Jones replacement. Could be great.

Another fan of Black Sails right here. Some of these dudes deserve to be in a Comicbook movie.

Never got around to seeing the 4th, but I liked the first 3 well enough. I wouldn't be unwilling to give the 5th a chance.

Sounds like Kiera Knightley's character will end up getting the dreaded 'died off screen between sequels' treatment.

Loved the 1st, 2nd, and 4th; 3rd one sucked. However this sounds really good if at all true. Would've been interesting to see Christolph Waltz as the villain.

@DrunkenNukem yeah, or maybe the Lance Hunter type-of-guy. I was picturing him as an agent from Argus, being introduced in the WW Movie. I don't know.

Don't bother with the 4th...It's bad. Penelope Cruz manages to ruin it almost single-handedly. And the lack of Orlando and Knightely is very evident.

Here's the thing... the first Pirates movie actually had some solid story telling. Everyone had a clear, believable motivation that carried them through each and every scene, and there wasn't a bunch of artificial macguffins between them and those motivations. Throughout the film, the cast members were paired up in different ways and how they reacted to each other was all based on those clear motivations... you understood why they would work together and exactly when they would turn on each other. The only "magic" with arbitrary rules was the cursed gold, and it made decent sense... with the briefest of histories behind it you understood why it was cursed, what the point of it was, and had the rules lined out.

The next two sequels, however, are a mess. Gone are the clear motivations and even worse, the plot is suddenly loaded down with nonsensical side quests based on arbitrary magic "rules". They fell in love with their own mythology and so everything is based on bullshit. The villain is hanging people trying to make them sing a song, because that will mean that the pirate counsel will be called to order, but of course they all need gather the pieces of eight, and so they need to get Captain Jack back from the dead, all so they can ultimately... um... beat the bad guy, I guess? But before any of that, they have to find Davey Jones's heart before the villain does, which he cut out because he loved a sea goddess who turns to a pile of crabs later and makes a giant whirlpool.. It just goes on and on.
