FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER Director Addresses Controversial Galactus Redesign

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer director Tim Story has addressed the sequel's divisive take on Galactus, explaining how the iconic comic book villain ended up being a cosmic storm cloud...

Some of you might not be old enough to remember this, but back in 2005, 20th Century Fox released Fantastic Four. The movie starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Julian McMahon and...well, it wasn't good.

2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was a minor improvement, but comic book fans were left fuming over the sequel's take on world-eating baddie Galactus.

Put simply, he was a cloud, and while we got to see an outline of his classic appearance within that cosmic storm, making the villain the equivalent of a bit of bad weather was a major misstep on the movie's part. Now, director Tim Story has weighed in with an explanation for where things went wrong with Galactus' big screen debut.

"Absolutely not," the filmmaker responded when ComicBook.com asked if Rise of the Silver Surfer's take on Galactus was the best possible version we could hope to see. "But I do not have any problem with going on record at the time."

"The ones in charge were afraid of what that could be because, you have to remember, even Marvel has gone through quite cleverly and successfully introduced us to superheroes being in space, and at the time that was never dealt with. So as a being from space, there were those in charge who weren't ready for what that could be."

"And, so, you know, that's not the interpretation it should have been," Story concluded. "But coming up, there will be some good stuff."

The mid-2000s were a very different time for the comic book movie genre, so it's easy to imagine the director facing a lot of pushback from studio execs over a villain like Galactus. With that in mind, it might be time to forgive Story for his role in the character's portrayal!

Marvel Studios is rebooting Fantastic Four with Matt Shakman at the helm, and it's widely believed Galactus is going to serve as the main antagonist. Needless to say, we expect a comic-accurate take on him if so.

Bring back Tim Story! I think he did a great job honestly.

@TheManWithoutFear - The second movie was definitely better than the first imo (except the cloud at the end)

@TheManWithoutFear - The family banter between the cast was great, especially Johnny and Ben. The movies had a kind of Silver Age campiness that I enjoy. Doom was... honestly probably the best they could have done at the time. Now, nearly 20 years later, people will be more willing to accept the inherent wackiness of a scarred tech genius/sorcerer who rules a tiny eastern European country, literally named Victor von Doom.

It worked for how the movie chose to interpret Galactus, and how they chose to interpret Glactus was fine for the plot structure. He was a natural disaster that the Silver Surfer was supposed to prevent at the last minute, he was never going to be a character. Silver Surfer, Doom and the military were the antagonists, and each worked to varying degrees. Yeah, if you can't tell, I actually like those Fantastic 4 movies, perhaps the first more than the second, but I like them.

From what I've heard about behind-the-scenes stuff, the guy who insisted Galactus be a cloud was the same one at Fox who had them sew Deadpool's mouth shut in X-Men Origins Wolverine--and was the same exec Deadpool broke the fourth wall and said Hi to at the end of that test footage that got leaked, leading to him finally getting his own film.

@EarlChai - that would be Tom Rothman. The same exec running Sony now and giving us such gems as Morbius and Venom:Let There Be Carnage. And before anyone brings up Spiderverse and Holland’s films I’ll mention that Rothman was also running Fox when X2 was released.

We all hate on the cloud that was Galactus but cgi was only good enough to make Torch and Surfer look good. I’m guessing they were afraid to make a giant man big enough to eat earth and still make him look good enough for cinema. I’m excited to see how they do it for the new film as the celestial looked great in Eternals and I can imagine they’ve figured out how to add a humanoid looking face. Antonio banderas is going to look crazy AF.

Looking back on it mid 2000s marvel was mostly trash but since we’ve never seen it before it was awesome at the time smh lol

@Order66 - no we thought it was trash back then too except for the first 2 Spider-Man films and first 2 X-Men films. Marvel films didn’t really become seen as must-see until Avengers.

His size in the comics, clearly made them reluctant.🤣 Prior to Michael Bay's Transformers, I guess there hadn't been too many (good) examples, of giant characters in live-action. Hopefully the MCU doesn't overthink it, and does Galactus justice.

His name is Tom Rothman, and he's terrible. He was terrible in the 2000's (No unique, accurate X-Men uniforms, Galactus Fart Cloud, "Fauxpool") and he's still terrible now. Any comic book movies produced under his leadership that were successful were in spite of his awful ideas and dictates.

Galactus was a giant flamer Cheetos & Tequila fart cloud.

Those movies were horrible.

This upcoming FF movie has a lot of the MCU's credibility moving forward depending on it.

He is talking about Tom Rothman. He butchered so many Fox movies.
