LOTR Star Sean Astin Almost Directed A FANTASTIC FOUR Movie; Wanted Christina Aguilera For Sue Storm

LOTR actor Sean Astin has revealed that he came very close to directing a Fantastic Four movie back in the early noughties, and looked at Cameron Diaz, Michael Chiklis and Christina Aguilera for key roles.

If things had played out a little differently almost 20 years ago, we could have seen a Fantastic Four movie directed by Lord of the Rings and Stranger Things star Sean Astin.

While speaking to Collider, the actor revealed that he almost got to helm his take on Marvel's first family for 20th Century Fox when he was looking for a project to direct after finishing up on Peter Jackson's Ocar-winning trilogy. Apparently, the movie came pretty close to happening before everything fell through, and Astin has his eye on several actors to fill the roles of the four main heroes.

His top choice for Sue Storm/Invisible Woman was actually pop star Christina Aguilera, who hadn't done any acting at that point. He also met with Cameron Diaz (The Mask, Charlie's Angels), who passed because she would have had to spend too long in the make-up chair.

Funnily enough, his pick to play Ben Grimm/The Thing, Michael Chiklis, would go on to portray the character in Tom Story's version in 2005.

Astin's take on the Fantastic Four could have been... interesting? At the very least, it couldn't have been any worse than Josh Trank's 2015 effort.
