THE FANTASTIC FOUR: Galactus And Silver Surfer Still Expected To Take On Lead Roles; Update On Doctor Doom

New details have emerged about Marvel Studios' plans for The Fantastic Four's villains, and while Galactus and Silver Surfer are still expected to take centre stage, it seems there's still room for Doom...

It's been quite a week for MCU news, with Marvel Studios finally announcing the cast of The Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing).

Now we have Marvel's First Family, all eyes have shifted to who will play the reboot's big bad. We've been hearing for some time that Galactus will take centre stage in the movie, a refreshing change of pace after Doctor Doom was heavily featured in all three previous efforts.

According to The Insneider, Javier Bardem remains the top choice to play Galactus but that's dependent on whether he can make time for The Fantastic Four after last year's strikes delayed work on Apple TV+'s Brad Pitt-led Formula 1 movie.

Meetings have already started taking place between Marvel Studios and actors they'd like to see transform into Silver Surfer, so it seems those rumours about Anya Taylor-Joy playing a gender-swapped version of the hero were incorrect.

The site also reiterates reports that Doctor Doom will appear in The Fantastic Four, but not until the very end of the movie with casting figured out down the line (in other words, it will likely be a body double on set with the voice added during post-production).

Elsewhere in the report, it's mentioned that returning Disney CEO Bob Iger has allowed Marvel Studios more time to focus on individual projects than Bob Chapek did. However, the studio doesn't want four MCU movies to drop in a single year, suggesting Blade will slip into 2026.

The Fantastic Four, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, debuted in 1961. The team is comprised of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Susan Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing). They gained superpowers during a space mission, becoming Marvel's first family of superheroes.

Reed is the brilliant stretchy strategist, Sue has invisibility and force field powers, Johnny controls fire, and while Ben possesses super strength, he's also covered by rock. The team confronts cosmic threats, explores alternate dimensions, and battles iconic foes like Doctor Doom. Their groundbreaking stories revolutionized superhero comics, emphasizing family dynamics and sci-fi adventures.

Director Matt Shakman has worked with both Avatar: The Way of Water co-writer Josh Friedman and WandaVision's Cam Squires on the latest draft of The Fantastic Four's screenplay. The movie is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 25, 2025.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - Was supposed to start filming around spring this year I seem to recall.

As much as I want to see Silver Surfer and Galactus I think the first movie is too soon.

Mole Man
Doctor Doom
Galactus

Or

Doctor Doom
Frightful Four
Galactus

@marvel72 - they basically screwed the pooch on the frightful four since the multiverse saga is ending basically right after this. People are already tired of multiverse stuff so bringing in a team of variants right after the saga ended is just gonna rub people the wrong way.

@marvel72 - The Surfer should have his own film and then a F4 crossover. I agree, way too much and too soon, worries me since they have to establish these characters and do surfer and galactus justice

@marvel72 - Mole Man would be a great origin foe but that ship sailed a long time ago. No time to mess around. Give me a real Galactus and a Silver Surfer with some oomph please.

@EgoEgor - They could do a Marvel Special Presentation The Origin Of The Silver Surfer.

Then have him turn up in a Fantastic Four movie.

@Goldboink -

Its very difficult to see a bigger threat after Galactus if you use him in the first movie.

Galactus should be the final boss of a phase involving all of Earths heroes.

@marvel72 - should be saved for a reboot. galactus could be the new thanos

@marvel72 -
They won't kill him, just chase him away like they did in the original run. Silver Surfer gets freed from service and some new entity becomes the herald. He will still be out there. That has the highest emotional impact.

@marvel72 - I’m in the same page. First Galactus is too big a bad to take out in a part 1, bc Doom aside, the World Eater is kinda tough to top. He should really be teased like Thanos was and built up to over time. If he shows and gets taken out, it kinda diminishes the threat too quickly which sets a kinda high bar for what comes next in comparison.

Glad to hear Silver Surfer will be Norin Nadd and not gender swapped

I agree SS needs his own movie, show how Galactus chose him to be his herald, have him serve for a while watching worlds get destroyed, only to have a change of heart, defect, and end with him in his way to warn earth of the coming threat.

SS is a character I could see carrying his own franchise, crossing paths with Beta Ray Bill, Adam Warlock maybe even Captain Marvel

Lots of cosmic stories to be told. Hopefully they don’t relegate him to a side character who we never see again

@Goldboink - I'm thinking a 2nd or 3rd film now, prior to or after multiverse shenanigans. They clearly saw the writing on the wall, or spaghetti, and went right into the team's titular big bad. I'm also a fan of Miles Teller as the Maker. He possibly should have gotten more consideration, but the reboot film a few years ago likely left a little cringe in the minds of many w/good reason.

@MuadDib - disagree with most people here, so hear me out. Galactus isn’t your typical super villain out for universal domination. He’s a force of nature. His purpose in life is just plain survival.
Just like in the comics, have him show up to devour earth, then with the help of the Surfer, they stop him. Reed realizes that Galactus serves a purpose in the cosmos and as bad as it sounds, must continue with that purpose. Maybe a “Thanos was right” moment.

@h8red - Just feels like squeezing in Galactus and SS into a first movie, even if it’s not an origin story is a lot while still introducing and establishing the 4 main characters, whatever’s happening with their timeline and then dropping in Doom at the end

Maybe I’m biased bc I’m a SS fan, but his story deserves more time so he can really connect w/ the GA, otherwise he’ll be like so many other wasted characters that have shown up in previous MCU movies only never to be seen or heard from again.

The way I see it, if Galactus needs to be used in part 1, he should only be defeated in such a way that he still poses a threat, so he can return down the line with a new herald or heralds at his side in a potential part 3 or beyond.

To bring him in and wipe him off the chess board from the start is the wrong move. But I get what you mean by the Thanos was Right moment.

Honestly just hope they don’t fudge this up like the last SS that was shoehorned into a F4 movie

h8red - 2/16/2024, 3:24 PM
@MuadDib - I’m with you about the SS. They better not mess that up. One of my all time favorites. About the only thing they got right from the previous movie was his demeanor. You knew that he was serving his master, but it was for a reason. There is so much that the MCU can do with the Surfer. But again, the Galactus “threat” is something that they can different and special if they handle it right.

Why do I think Dr. Strange could figure in the FF's future?

60s setting/sure upcoming move to current setting/big cosmic stuff/maybe Strange & Clea went off to mess with Annihilus.

Those FFers gotta do some kind of time/dimensional/cosmic stuff to ultimately wind up in the present time.

Lots of cool ways they could go with this.

Barden is great for Galactus! Just dont overthink the Silver Surfer casting.

Poor Ali is going to be pushing 60 by the time Balde hits theaters.

@Ryguy88 - Yeah, man. That's what I've been thinking. Ali is great, but should a 60 year old be cast for a character that isn't supposed to age?
Ryguy88

Nah, we need Mole Man or Red Ghost and his Super Apes. Perfect weird 60s era villains they can turn into badasses.

Idk how I feel about Galactus and Silver Surfer being the villains. Only because I feel they deserve their own movie. I feel it would be cool and different to have the Mole Man be the villain of the first movie.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/16/2024, 9:47 AM
Bardem could work as Galactus but I feel he would make a great Doom aswell imo.

Anyway , doing Galactus off the bat is an odd choice since how would you go bigger down the line than the Eater of Worlds?.

I think a more “grounded” villain like Mole Man or The Wizard could work for a first installment or even Annihilus if they want a more fantastical one.

Anyway we’ll see if true , looking forward to this!!.

Galactus and Silver Surfer deserve their own movie. Norrin-Rad's origin story is so unique and interesting that it's asking for a film. Plus, I think it takes away from the F4 characters, this should be about them, maybe someone like Annihulus would be better.

It's all coming together. I can just see it now...

Galactus played by Javier Bardem
Doctor Doom played by Mads Mikkelsen
Mole Man played by Josh Trank

I wish they could adapt Jim Lee's FF origin from Heroes Reborn. It integrated the Surfer and Galactus into how the FF got their powers. And it was by far the best of the HR segue.
