FANTASTIC FOUR Actor Michael Chiklis On Planned MCU Reboot: "Try To Make It [Dark], You Will Fail"

Michael Chiklis, who played Ben Grimm/The Thing in 20th Century Fox's original Fantastic Four movies, commented on the upcoming reboot, advising Marvel Studios not to go down the "dark and brooding" route.

Michael Chiklis played Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, in 2005's Fantastic Four and its sequel Rise of the Silver Surfer, and even though the movies proved to be highly divisive (that's probably an understatement), the Emmy Award-winning The Shield star's performance was singled out as a major highlight.

During an interview with Screen Rant, Chiklis was asked for his thoughts on Marvel Studios' planned FF reboot, and the actor had some sound advice for how Kevin Feige and co. should approach their reinvention of Marvel's First Family and the Ever-Lovin, Blue-Eyed Thing.

"Go CGI if you can [laughs]. Wardrobe was something else, but it was still a pretty amazing experience. Just understand, the real tone and tenor of The Fantastic Four is as we did it. It's not meant to be dark and brooding. It's never going to be The Dark Knight. Don't try to make it that. Don't expect it to be that. The Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing was from Brooklyn and he was a Dodgers fan. They were a sweet family and that's the way it's meant to be. It wasn't meant to be hardcore and dark and brooding. Try to make it that, you will fail."

Even if you thought Chiklis' movies were a bit too light-hearted, it's hard to argue with his rationale. The Fantastic Four have been through a fair amount of bleak stuff in the comics over the years, but by and large, "dark" wouldn't be the first word fans associate with this particular super-team. After all, 20th Century Fox went grittier for 2015's FANT4STIC, and we all know how that turned out.

There is a happy medium, of course, and we're confident Marvel Studios and director Jon Watts will find it.

What do you guys make of Chiklis' comments? Be sure to share your thoughts down below.

@dracula - The comics match them up a lot but realistically, The Thing should get pulverized by Hulk on account that Hulk can basically become infinitely strong.

@dracula - IMO Incredibles 2 wasn't the best, but still way better than every single FF movie.

@Thing94 - People need to reignite brain cells when dealing with this team. The Incredibles are a close strand to the F4 brand. They did a good job, but I challenge MARVEL to set the bar HIGHER. The key word: DIMENSIONS.

Reed Richards:

I want Reed to be a know it all, who is right, because he has a passion for knowledge, with science being his cornerstone. He is constantly observing, analyzing, studying, creating, evolving, learning. His love for the study of life should be apparent in everything, to the point it would almost be annoying- if it wasn't for Sue. Their conversations should play out like verbal chess matches. Pausing to breakdown explanations for Ben & Johnny (and the audience) into digestible "eurekas". Their love should not be overshadowed with teenybop ooohhhs and ahhhs, but with subtle displays of "you get me", without ever having to say those words.

Sue Storm:

Sue should have a mind for this life. She is a traditionalist, who is not afraid of anything, with being a Mother at the forefront of her persona. Her strength is in empathy. Her ability to comprehend, coddle, repermand, and rebuke should be displayed in all her words and actions. She is a Mom to the MCU. You don't get an idea of how cool she is, you see an active radiance of her charm, wit, charisma, and confidence without being insulting, or the know-it-all who belittles the rest of the 🌎 for the sake of "fingersnap/ you go gurl"! She should posses the ability to almost talk down Thanos, while having the power to contain him if needed.

Johnny Storm:

Johnny should be the hope of the family. A charismatic, driven, happy-go-lucky kid, who cares about responsibility, but doesn't allow it to overwhelm his ability to enjoy. He is the guy that becomes Spider-Man's male BFF in the post Ned and MJ Era. He takes things in stride. He doesn't have all the answers, but he trusts in his family, because they do. This is the guy that is FUN. Not because he's an irresponsible jock, but because he is funny, dedicated, LOYAL, and willing to give an extra mile for the sake of others. This is because of the grooming process of his mentor: Ben Grimm...

Ben Grimm:

The THING is Yancy Street. He is tough on Johnny- which gives Johnny the sometimes 🔥
head attitude, along with important life lessons for character building. Ben has huge foresight in areas of defense and strategy. Imagine Mike from Breaking Bad. He has respect from his community, and he never shys from doing the right "Thing". He is the guy you want in a war, and a victory celebration. He is courageous, tough, loveable, and posses genius comprehension when dealing with tough issues. And- he is coated in Rock skin. His skin should harden via impact. He is almost clay-like in the beginning, hardening with each strike. This will be a nod to his original look in the comics, while giving him a practical reason for the evolved look of today. Reed eventually gives him the antidote that sheds his Rock like frame annually, but it returns with impact. This understanding will make an interesting scene, should Ben ever run into a certain "jade giant"...

Victor Von Doom:

He is right- and will never compromise logic for feelings. He is the ultimate isolated Man, who'd rather ponder amongst his own thoughts than be bothered with anyone else's opinion. He is anti-family. His conversations are with Doom bots, preprogrammed with his own mind. They are a skewed Jarvis, who is overly subservient, to the near point of annoyance at times. This is due to the chaos caused by Ultron. He feels like he is superior to Stark, while buliding most things from Tony's blueprints. His inability to accept or give mercy or compassion is his Achilles heel. He sometimes portrays these traits to meet greater selfish goals. He is the ultimate antagonist. He will disrupt order to learn the reaction of things around him. This gives him a passion for chaos. He plays the long game. He is stern and cold. This stems from the unexplained loss of his Mother long ago. A loss that made him bitter, but very disciplined. On the surface, he is constantly striving to search for solutions in science. This gives him a slight respect, coated with disdain, for Reed and family that would never be verbally spoken. In the shadows, he is heavily active in the occult. Looking to Mordo, Scarlet Witch, Agatha, Baron Zemo and others for knowledge. The goal: find out about the disappearance of his Mother, and retrieve her. He is the epitome of WHATEVER IT TAKES. For Victor, failure is not an option, even at the planet's expense. This is Reed's polar opposite. The monster Reed might have become, had it not been for the connection to 4amily...

I want to see this movie, directed by Vince McGill (I love the introductory angle shots he often uses to begin scenes), written by J. Michael Straczynski. Make the F4 better than anything b4. By the time the credits roll, I'd like to think Stan Lee would look with a smile and say "Nuff' said". Penny. Penny.
