J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is widely considered to be the greatest fantasy tale of all time, but for many, Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time would be part of the conversation.

Late last year it was announced that The Wheel of Time had been ordered to series at Amazon, and news broke recently that Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, Jack Reacher, Die Another Day) had been cast in the lead role of Moiraine Damodred. Now, we know which actors will be joining her as the young men and women who “embark on a dangerous, world-spanning journey."

Madeleine Madden (Tidelands) will star as Egwene Al’Vere; Marcus Rutherford (Obey) as Perrin Aybara; Barney Harris (Clique) as Mat Cauthon; Zoë Robins (Power Rangers) as Nynaeve; and Josha Stradowski (Just Friends) as Rand Al’Thor.

Character description were not provided, but the show's official Twitter account did share some cast portraits which you can check out below.

Are you looking forward to The Wheel of Time? Sound off in the comments.

Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

I'd like to dive into the books but by the gods there's too many.

@Vanillain - There are a lot of books, and they are all very long.

But there's no fantasy world better. This has some of the greatest characters and stories of any fantasy setting.

A lot of people praise Tolkien and LotR, and rightfully so, he started it all. But Wheel of Time is a true epic. It puts LotR to shame with how large and sprawling the story is.

@CorndogBurglar - Absolutely disagree.

Robert Jordan simply stretched the story out TOO LONG.

Started great, new, and the it gold old, tired and hackneyed. Only Mat ended up being interesting anymore.

@CorndogBurglar - Eh...I think when it hit the middle books where Jordan started putting the fantastical stuff in the background to the military movements it got a bit slogged down

I don't know anything about this, but it's fantasy and it's going to be released on a platform I have access to, so this will very much be watched.

Frickin Wheel of Time...

It was a trilogy in homage to Lord of the Rings
Then he decided it should be Five books...
Then it couldn't be completed unless it was Seven and very quickly Nine...
Then it was going to have to be Eleven books....

And THEN he died, and never completed the series, and someone else had to do it.

Look, it's a decent book series, but A) it's super repetitive and B) Everyone gets Superpowers and just prolongs the story.

If you want a similar but better read with an actual conclusion read the Fionivar Tapestry.

@fadersdream - Where I live, all the books where split into more than one volume at the translation. 25 books counting only the ones that Jordan wrote himself, each was given there own title at the translation.

Excruciating, plodding, and sexless meandering story. Not at all a book I would recommend to someone looking for an adult (human nature based) take on fantasy. I was into it through the first 5, 800 page books but christ did it drag. I put it down and never looked back. Fans will go on and on about it being "the best" and all but it's very subjective.
