Black Beard to be Villain for Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

Black Beard to be Villain for Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

And the actor cast in the role is perfect!

Ian McShane is Black Beard! So from the sound of things POTC 4 is moving in strides now, after a very shaky start of changing directors, and some internal problems in the studios, now it's moving in top speed with Captain Sparrow's Black Pearl already docked in Hawaii and now with the casting of what would seem the villain of the next piece.

It has been difficult to be excited for this next installment on the Pirates series but with McShane on board, I'll say I'm pretty excited where the next adventure would lead too. I'm intrigued on what take they will have on these legendary pirate, and of his famous ship as well the Queen Anne's Revenge. I guess will just have to wait and see.

Ian McShane joins Johnny Depp, who will be returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, and the recently announced Penelope Cruz who is described as "Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways." The story in this is based on a Tim Powers' book, which focuses heavily on the Fountain of Youth, which would be a perfect continuation from the previous movie because it was hinted at the conclusion of At World's End. New Director Rob Marshall at the helm replacing Gore Verbinski.

I'll watch, I might be in the minority here but I truly did enjoy the POTC movies.

-ACCESS out. Godspeed and MABUHAY!

omg wow if true this would make for the one reason i would watch!the other three movies were great, but upon hearing a 4th installment is in the works without the original director on board i was immediately hesitant. however the star of hbo's deadwood with his shakespearian vocabulary interspersed with modern american obscenities was truly a masterful accomplishment in script writing! its a shame this is a disney movie though , because i doubt we will hear any lovely ditties from the mouth of good ol' al swearengen.

after seeing how the movies took the legends of davy jones and the flying dutchman, the black pearl and the curse of the dead mans chest, spinning pirate lore into mythological treatments, i cant wait to see the queen annes revenge and its pigtail-bearded captain! blackbeard lit cannon fuses in his pirate hat leaving an eerie wake of mist-like smoke as he walked. he may be portrayed as a good-guy of sorts because he never killed anyone from the ships he would board, at least not anyone that survived the onslaught of cannon fire that always preceded the boarding, but still he was always made out to look more of the bad guy than he really was, im sure the menacing appearance of smoke surrounding him did little to asuage the fear he would instill in his pirating victims. cant wait to see how mcshane plays the part!
good find!!

Ah yes, ol cocksucking [frick]ing whore master Swearengen. I like the first 2 Pirates movies but the last one really lost the plot. It was like watching a dog running around in the dark with a torch tied to its tail.

Pirates 1 kicked ass. The second was okay, but it just wasn't quite as good as the first. The third, Christ, the plot got so unnecessarily convoluted, characters turned 180 constantly, some of the acting sucked (cough Bloom cough), etc.

He really looks the part.
Actually aside from Tai Long of Kung Fu Panda his name really sounds familiar.
I look it up under Wikipedia and guess what.

Now I remembered he played JUDAS ISCARIOT in JESUS OF NAZARETH in 1977!

After 33 years the Dude looks even more like Judas! Cool actor.

@LEE: Hellz. Yeah. Ian McShane = Vandal Savage. Excellent.
@Nerosday: I second that. He'd rock the sh*t outta an old Bruce Wayne/Bats.

Excellent news Access! Cheers! I too loved the Pirate movies and Ian McShane as Black Beard? Uh, that's definitely a 'Hell Yeah' moment if ever there were one. Great scoop. Keep'em comin.

I agree with everyone - McShane is a brilliant actor. A couple of problems though... at the end of the last film, Depp's character was seen sailing off into the sunset TOWARDS THE FLORIDA KEYS in search of the Fountain of Youth. Now they say he's in Hawaii? Are they ditching the whole 'Quest for Immortality' thing that was Sparrow's theme all throughout the last film? Did he find the Fountain already? Is he in fact immortal? And what happened to Barbosa and the Pearl? Black Beard was arguablely one of the most famous pirates ever, yet there was no mention of him in the last film at the Brethren Court - is this next film a prequel? What gives here?

I'm right with you on that, Access, I dig all three of the movies mahself.

I'm always a sucker for good special effects, and this trilogy (quad-logy?) has it in spades. Of course with McShane on the cast, I'm definately in for handing over more of my moolah to The Rat. McShane is perfect for a villan; he looks the part (didn't Swearengen evoke imagery of Snidely Whiplash?), he sounds the part (only Miguel Ferrer has a villanous voice on McShane's level, imo), and he has the acting chops to work such a high-budget production- and do it with class.

Overall, methinks this is good news.
