BOX OFFICE: JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Takes The #1 Spot With An Underwhelming $28 Million

Early tracking indicated that Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer was set to be another big budget box office flop, and while it did manage to make it to the #1 spot in North America this past weekend, it has seriously underperformed. Read on for details!

Critics haven't been particularly kind and neither has the moviegoing public as Jack the Giant Slayer failed to make any sort of significant impact at the North American box office this past weekend. As 2013's first big budget action movie, it came in at #1 with a paltry $28 million. It did manage to make an additional $13.7m from Asian markets, and Warner Bros.' vice president of theatrical distributions Jeff Goldstein claims that the studio aren't too disappointed by these numbers. "It was within the range of our expectations. We know that this is a global picture and the technology and the special effects will really drive this movie internationally." Deadline aren't so kind in their analysis as they believe that not even a strong international opening can make back the huge $200 million budget. Some insiders are reportedly blaming director Bryan Singer and the screenplay for its lack of success. Here's hoping that X-Men: Days of Future Past fares a little better...

Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Bryan Singer is a useless director and I don't know why WB does not get it.

He made 'Superman Returns' along with his Gay pals into a Chick flick and I will hate him for all eternity.

I hope for the sake of X Men fans that he gets fired or by some miracle gives them a half decent movie.

not surprised at all aye. I dont exactly have any confidence in x-men:dofp doing well when it releases as well. I just watched the first xmen trilogy again today and boy was that a not so good series. hopefully that movie would be the end of the franchise.

A clear flop at the box office, who in their right mind agreed a budget of $200 million for this kind of film! It would be probably do no more than $250-300 million.

Is "The Usual Suspects" the ONLY Bryan Singer film that was good?

From the very first trailer I saw of this I knew it was going to suck on account of just how damn silly it looks. X-Men: DOFP is most and likely going to suck as well. In fact, X-Men: FC wasn't nearly as great as fanboys and critics made it out to be. They mistook it not completely sucking ass, for it being a great film. When at best, it was average.
The entire X-Men film universe needs to be rebooted.

What were haters and producers expecting?

These type of movies havent appealed to a huge audience lately.

Lincoln, the vampire hunter, Hansel & Grettel, now Jack...

so why the dissapointment? USA is proving to not care too much about these movies, including John Carter too. (sad case, I know)

As some have mentioned, the problem is with USA

just a few examples:

- John Carter:

International: $209,700,000
USA: $73,078,100

- X-Men: First Class

International: $207,215,819
USA: $146,408,305

- Ice Age: Continental Drift

International: 715,922,939
USA: $161,321,843

As we can see, many mainstream movies are having a hard time reaching $200m on USA, the rest of the world is supporting movies, its USA who is loosing support/interest.

So these studios should really take it into consideration and start thinking about other options

I saw this movie and enjoyed it for what it was, a popcorn flix.

by the way I think that bryan singers contributions made it better than the script was to begin with cause its a simple story with big effects.

some of the giant shots were pretty cool

@teabag, you definetly has a point.

Some movies need to appeal both to kids and parents too. And in some cases, maybe parents dont feel certain movies would be right for kids, and maybe Jack... is one of these cases.

I very much enjoyed the film. I think people are just jumping to conclusions about it because it was a great fantasy adventure

gonna hate on Singer again . . . nothing against cast & crew. I hope this is an indicator of how DOFP will perform. I would love the X-Men franchise to go back to Marvel Studios.

I saw it..It wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be, but definitely not a great movie. CGI on the giants was good, and they had a lot of detail. Sentinels will have far less detail, so they should come out fine. But I don't have high expectations for DOFP. I'm hoping to be surprised.

@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin It made less in Asia than it did in NA..What are you talking about? A flop is a flop. And GI Joe was not moved to coincide with anything. Where are you getting your facts from?

So back in the 90's Bryan Singer did Apt Pupil, and the Usual Suspects... since then everything he does is a let down... he demolished XMen, destroyed Superman... and I'll wait for Jack the Giant Slayer to be on netflix... (i know, that's a longer wait than DVD) i'm just not excited for this movie whatsoever... my kid was SEMI interested in it...
