The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Even at over 2 hours, these movies are considerably shorter than the LOTR movies. The average time for LOTR Extended Edition is 4.2 hours. But I like the Hobbit films. They do a good job of sticking to the source material while adding new parts that livened up some of the more dull parts of the book.

I wouldn't mind seeing 25 minutes of extra footage.

I strongly disagree, but that's cool. Glad you liked the movies!

This whole section of the movie was pretty trippy in high-frame rate 3D.

For the most part they stuck to the material. If the movies were a literal translation of the source material, they would have been boring, but they took out what didn't work and kept what did.

Comparing the Hobbit and LOTR is apples and oranges. They are two completely different stories, one is very straight forward, the other very complex. People tend to praise LOTR but neglect to point out the movies many flaws and omissions.

The middle earth franchise should have included the Cage

I'd say for the most part they worked some familiar elements from the book into their bloated, clunky, entirely too CGI-heavy fan fiction. They did take a few things out that I would argue might've worked, but more often they changed things and even more often they just stuffed new things in to have enough material to fill an overlong trilogy.

Few people -including me- expected a 1:1 adaptation of the book, because like with many -if not most- adaptations that wouldn't work all too well. I have no problem, for example, with actually SHOWING the Battle of Five Armies, instead of watching Bilbo being told the events.

But things like having the dwarves not only confront Smaug (which would be huge change already), but make a chase sequence ala Tom & Jerry out of it - that's taking it too far for me personally.

But as I said, different tastes, it's all good. I'm genuinely happy for everyone who is able to enjoy the movies so much. I'd love to be able to enjoy them as well. :9

The extended versions are the best.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion which is to be respected. But Jackson didn't really deviate his approach to the Hobbit from what he did with LOTR. 80% of everything in LOTR was CGI, Legolas was an unstoppable killing machine, the lone representative of the dwarves provided the comic relief and there were significant things left out of LOTR, such as the complete exclusion of Radagast who was instrumental in Gandalf escaping Isengard or the absence of the rangers at the battle of Minas Tirith. My point is that Jackson has his own style and he took pretty much the same approach of with the Hobbit as he did with LOTR.

I agree that Jackson tends to take simple action scenes and go over the top with them. In LOTR, one that comes to mind is the battle of Minas Tirith where Legolas encounters a Mumakil with about 20 riders on top of it and kills all of them within a matter of 15 seconds.

It was expected that things were left out of the LotR adaptation, it's just damn big. I also didn't like everything Jackson did there, and today I have a lot more problems especially with the second and third movie than I had back when they were in the cinema and I completely thrilled about getting them.

I also don't think the "80% CGI" is accurate, and aside from going wild with it at some points -especially in RotK- it felt to me like Jackson mostly used it when it was neccessary to adapt the books. With 'The Hobbit' he changes and adds scene after scene with the explicit intent of making CGI spectacles out of them.

And yeah, Legolas was a killing machine in the LotR movies. He also was a pretty deadly chracter in the books, but I completely agree that Jackson went overboard with some of his scenes. But... he WAS in the books, and his scenes were the among the worst offenders when it came to over the top CGI scenes. In 'The Hobbit' they give him a lot of scenes to artificially extend a story he was no part of, and treat most of the action like his LotR scenes.

Sidenote: I'm all for a Legolas cameo to add a more depth and perspective to the Middle-earth movieverse. But making up extensive CGI skirmishes and a love triangle involving him and a made-up character without any connection to the lore? No thanks.

Its amazing how much I could not wait to get my hands on the Extended cuts of the LOTR trilogy... but this? the entire trilogy is an already too long adaptation. we dont need an extended cut. If anything when its all said and done, they need a recut version of all three movies rolled into one more succinct and accurate film

You're welcome! There must always be a "hater" on Hobbit threads. ;)

And my actual rage about the movies is long gone. Though I have to admit that I probably never raged as much about a movie online as I did about 'Desolation of Smaug'. I spent entirely too much time debating that piece of... popular cinema. I was even a regular on the IMDB boards, and I rarely ever post anything there.
