Guillermo Del Toro Was Offered To Direct “Gigantic” Superhero Films, But Turned Them Down

With Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 on hold (maybe worse), he gave a brief update on that film, and the long-awaited Hellboy 3! While he didn’t say much on the two, he did reveal that he had the chance to direct “gigantic” superhero films. Hit the jump to check it out!

When it was announced that Guillermo Del Toro would be directing Justice League Dark, a few months later he dropped out of the project to do Pacific Rim 2. However, once he begin to work on that film, it was delayed, put on hold, and eventually removed from Universal’s release schedule. Basically, after the success of Blade 2, Pacific Rim, and the first two Hellboy films, Del Toro hasn’t had any luck with giant Hollywood action flicks.

With that said, Del Toro decided to work on another film. A film that he could work on, on a smaller scale. “What I can tell you quite safely is, I don’t intend to keep on doing big, giant Hollywood movies for much longer,” Guillermo told The Guardian. Crimson Peak is a great permit for me to work on a smaller scale. I mean, it’s big for a drama, but it’s a much smaller undertaking than Pacific Rim or Hellboy.” Sometimes a director can use a break from directing high-budget action films, and Crimson Peak just might be the break Del Toro needs.

Shortly after, Del Toro revealed that he’s declined offers to direct blockbuster superhero films, and re-affirms that he most likely will not direct action/superhero movies any more. “I can’t say which ones, but I’ve been offered gigantic movies in the superhero genre, but I don’t like the superheroes that are… nice. I like the dark ones, so Blade and Hellboy were right for me.” He then continued, “The mechanics of action only interest me when it’s a universe very, very close to my heart, which Pacific Rim is, and I love it. I’m not going to pursue action movies or superhero movies at all any more. I hope I can go back to doing the smaller, weirder ones.”

So, if the studios ever decide to move forward with Hellboy 3, and Pacific Rim 2, they just might be Del Toro’s last take on action movies. But hey, if the money’s right, Del Toro just might be back on board. Anyhow, what’s your take on Del Toro’s latest thoughts? Share them in the comment section below!

Based on what he's saying, he's still down for strange and smaller scale CBMs.

Know del Toro was offered Man of Steel but he turned that down. Love that quote against the more modern superheroes (coughMCUHeroescough) who come off as nice and goody two shoes.

The first appearance of that SWAT vampire team kind of broke The Strain for me. I might continue watching the second season at some point, but there isn't much of the initial appeal left that the first episodes had for me. Might still be an enjoyable show, but it's too far away from what I'd hoped it would be.

He's right. All heroes should snap some necks to show that they're not always nice guys.

@Dev7

Del Toro was never fully sold on directing JLD. I mean before the rumors came about him not directing, he said himself in 2013, 2014 that he may not direct JLD but will produce and be involved in the script for it.

Fair play.
If that means we'll get more films from this master of the macabre, the this is surely good.
The guy's been pushed from pillar to post, like a pinball, on big productions, it must be very frustrating.
I can't wait to see Crimson Peak.
It does look quite wonderful.

I really wish he would direct Dark Universe, though. I mean, when think of Dark Universe as a project, I think it's awesome, but when I think of a Gullermo Del Toro-directed Dark Universe? Fvck me. That... would just be too perfect of a film to exist. His aesthetic and use of mise en scene on that kind of universe? An original Vertigo movie, with all those wonderfully misunderstood monsters and characters with the beating, pulsating heart and soul of GDT? Take my fvcking money, sir. All of it. Right now. Take my doomdamned first-born.

Also, the "Big" and "Nice" superhero film that he nearly directed? Man of Steel. He was on Nolan's shortlist.

Oh man, is that Quinlan? Exhibit A in the argument that not all ideas that sound cool in a book should be adapted to live action.

Del Toro is such an ass. The fact that he doesnt want to finish the Hellboy series rustle my jimmies something serious. But hey, I like Strain.

I think he might make an exception for Hellboy III, if the money was there and he was allowed to do whatever he wanted.

I personally could see him making a beautiful Fables movies. The world is closer to Hellboy so this would be right up his alley.

Wasn't he supposed to do a Hulk series along with all the other projects that were scrapped?

Guillermo Del Toro isn't doing big budget films anymore? That's kind of disappointing, but I am interested to see him return to smaller films. This definitely explains the delay of PACIFIC RIM 2. Hopefully he does JUSTICE LEAGUE: DARK before he decides to quit (although it's currently looking like someone else will do that film). At this point, it's highly unlikely that Del Toro will do HELLBOY III.

Lol...This is funny considering how much money he wanted to actually make a HellBoy 3...
