Guillermo Del Toro Was Offered To Direct “Gigantic” Superhero Films, But Turned Them Down
With Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 on hold (maybe worse), he gave a brief update on that film, and the long-awaited Hellboy 3! While he didn’t say much on the two, he did reveal that he had the chance to direct “gigantic” superhero films. Hit the jump to check it out!
When it was announced that Guillermo Del Toro would be directing Justice League Dark, a few months later he dropped out of the project to do Pacific Rim 2. However, once he begin to work on that film, it was delayed, put on hold, and eventually removed from Universal’s release schedule. Basically, after the success of Blade 2, Pacific Rim, and the first two Hellboy films, Del Toro hasn’t had any luck with giant Hollywood action flicks.
With that said, Del Toro decided to work on another film. A film that he could work on, on a smaller scale. “What I can tell you quite safely is, I don’t intend to keep on doing big, giant Hollywood movies for much longer,” Guillermo told The Guardian. “Crimson Peak is a great permit for me to work on a smaller scale. I mean, it’s big for a drama, but it’s a much smaller undertaking than Pacific Rim or Hellboy.” Sometimes a director can use a break from directing high-budget action films, and Crimson Peak just might be the break Del Toro needs.
Shortly after, Del Toro revealed that he’s declined offers to direct blockbuster superhero films, and re-affirms that he most likely will not direct action/superhero movies any more. “I can’t say which ones, but I’ve been offered gigantic movies in the superhero genre, but I don’t like the superheroes that are… nice. I like the dark ones, so Blade and Hellboy were right for me.” He then continued, “The mechanics of action only interest me when it’s a universe very, very close to my heart, which Pacific Rim is, and I love it. I’m not going to pursue action movies or superhero movies at all any more. I hope I can go back to doing the smaller, weirder ones.”
So, if the studios ever decide to move forward with Hellboy 3, and Pacific Rim 2, they just might be Del Toro’s last take on action movies. But hey, if the money’s right, Del Toro just might be back on board. Anyhow, what’s your take on Del Toro’s latest thoughts? Share them in the comment section below!
