HARRY POTTER Director Chris Columbus Hoped To Return For The Final Two Films In The Series

Harry Potter director Chris Columbus, who helmed Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, has confessed that he was hoping to return for The Deathly Hallows before David Yates decided to stick around!

Filmmaker Chris Columbus directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but left the franchise before work began on the third installment. Warner Bros. would try a couple of different directors before turning to David Yates (who worked on Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and the two-part Deathly Hallows).

Yates has stayed in the Wizarding World, directing both Fantastic Beasts films and the upcoming third chapter. His work on the series has been well-received for the most part, but Columbus has admitted in an interview with Collider that he hoped to possibly return for those final two chapters.

"I always wanted to go back and shoot the final two movies, but Yates decided he was gonna stay with the series, and it was a great thing to do because I particularly love the very last movie," the filmmaker admitted. "I think that is just a brilliant film, the second part of Deathly Hallows."

It sounds like Yates was once only planning to stick around for the one Harry Potter film, and had that happened, Warner Bros. may very well have turned to Columbus to finish the story he started. Seeing what he'd have done with J.K. Rowling's final book no doubt would have been extremely entertaining. Yates definitely managed to end the series in style, however.

When put together part 1 and 2 of deathly hollows is perhaps the most loyal Harry Potter adaption. So I’d say they did all right. Though I did think Columbus did a very good job in the first two films, particularly in the casting and crafting of the world on-screen.

@MrDandy -

That's the thing, I agree as well, think those last two captured a lot of the details, where as I didn't enjoy the other movies.
But I did read the books as an adult and thought they were fantastic (bought them for my younger siblings), so I wasn't the main demographic for the movies.

@MrDandy - i disagree. Especially since a lot of that was set up in details not in the movies.

Chamber of secrets was probably my favorite. Learning about the lure of Harry Potter was more entertaining than the movies itself though

No one even came close to what Alfonso Cuarón did for this franchise.

Not having ever read the books, I really only like the middle movies that neither of these directors worked on.

Chris Columbus for Star Wars. Script, direction and a good adventure tone.

@BlackBeltJones - I think he’d be a good pick for an MCU film as well. He can do action and comedy.

@MovieMonster - The man behind Doubtfire or The Goonies can make a great family comedy with Howard the Duck.

@Repian - thats good although a Howard the duck movie should be more raunchy but he could tap Power Pack

Columbus did a great job bringing the magical world of Harry Potter to life in the first two films. However, Alfonso Cuaron and David Yates did a fantastic job expanding the lore and exploring the dark, sophisticated side of the Wizarding World. I love how the final two films turned out.

However, I feel that Yates has overstated his welcome with this franchise. I would like to see another director take over Fantastic Beasts and see Yates do other work. I actually liked his Tarzan movie and I think he’d be my pick to direct a new Superman movie. I can also see Columbus do an MCU movie since he has a knack for both action and comedy.

Yates is the worst... he ruined harry in the sixth movie by not having dd freeze him in the tower finale ... instead harry just stood in the shadows and watched as his father figure, mentor, and friend was executed. Some hero.

@ReverseFlasher - In the scene Harry has his wand out and ready until Snape motions for him to to be quiet, it played out to me that he assumed Snape had a plan. As much as he disliked snape he didnt have reason to question his loyalty to Dumbledore at that point in time.

i understand the later books were meant to be more serious and dark but David Yates took the dark part literally. Not bad, but the lighting and color was slightly jarring to me. His directing style is not my cup of tea. That magic and whimsy was well done by Columbus, its lacking in the new ones.

That would have been great. The first two are my favorite. I feel like they captured the magical feeling better than the later ones, but I do love them all.
