Kaya Scodelario Claims PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 Is "Much More Like The First Film"

After Disney announced Dead Men Tell No Tales, many people questioned the necessity of a fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. However, the first film is still dear to many fans' hearts - and it sounds like the producers are looking to recapture its magic...

The Pirates Of The Caribbean series has become increasingly derided with each new installment. Despite On Stranger Tides' impressive box office figures, many people viewed (Captain) Jack Sparrow's most recent venture as the weakest of the bunch. However, if there's one thing that never changes, it's how revered 2003's The Curse Of The Black Pearl is in the eyes the fans.

It seems Disney are looking to recapture that magic with the franchise's fifth entry, Dead Men Tell No Tales. Promising the sequel "will
have much more of the feel of the first film,", incoming star Kaya Scodelario played up the tonal similarities between the two movies. "[The producers] want to take it back to the beginning again," she told Digital Spy, "They wanted it to have this epic journey, and for it to make sense, and for it to tie things up, and also lead to new storylines."

Scodelario also elaborated a litte on her character, Carina Smyth. "[Carina] is an astronomer, and she is an academic," she claimed, "She's fighting for the right to study at university, because women couldn't at that time." She also managed to sneak in a few minor plot details. "So she's on her own journey - looking for the trident of Poseidon - and she has a diary with clues, and she encounters Jack Sparrow along the way, and he messes everything up. As he does. And it's fun!"

'Fun' is probably the best way to describe these movies - although Curse Of The Black Pearl is still one of the best adventure/fantasy blockbusters of the last fifteen years in my book. Could this next film reach similar heights? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set to hit theatres July 7, 2017.

I am probably one of the few that enjoy the sequels.

Dead Man's Chest was very entertaining and had perfect set-pieces and action. And that ending!

At World's End went a bit on the "dark" route and had unnecessary betrayals and deals between the characters. The pacing was slow and at times was boring. Too much talking. They also wasted the Kraken big time in that one. The last battle was cool though. Also, the action (where there was) was awesome.

On Stranger Tides never happened in my eyes. A complete abomination and a cash grab.

Really hope that they don't go the same route for the 5th one and put at least some passion in it.

Hopefully. I enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd for what they were. Of course they were inferior to the first one but still enjoyable and part of my Blu Ray collection. The 4th one however was unnecessary and seemed like filler

I haven't even seen it all the way through. The 4th one is just [frick]ing terrible

I enjoy these films but this makes me happy as the first was by far the best.

Glad it's mostly agreed that 1 is great, 2 is good, 3 is arg...and 4 is a god damn travesty. I loved the Will Turner arc in 3 however. I thought it was pretty shocking to see how that turned out. I'm optimistic about this.

On Stranger Tides was awesome. I don't understand how anybody can argue otherwise.
In any case, bring it on! More Pirates = More awesome.

I like all of the movies. Number 2 and 3 were awesome. Davy Jones is too underrated. And I enjoyed Penelope Cruz, Blackbeard and that escape scene in Stranger Tides. What I think is great is that they are really original, they are not reboots or remakes, they created a whole mythology. I dont get why people say this is unnecessary. More Jack Sparrow adventures can only mean more fun.

Kaya Scodelario is very beautiful. I wouldn't mind sailing the high seas with her.

The first film had a well-crafted story... The characters all had human motivations that were clear and understandable, which made their loyalties easy to follow as they were cleverly paired up in different ways throughout the film. There was only one mystical element, the cursed Aztec gold, and it had clearly defined effects and an easily understood backstory. You could take the magical element out of the plot and it would still work with minor tweaks (and no zombie pirate FX.) It was a very solid base on which outlandishly fun action sequences and set pieces were built.

The next two sequels, however, are a mess that crawled up their own asses in pursuit of nonsensical mythology at the expense of logic and character. Every other thing is magic, prompting vague motivations that drive the characters to do what the script tells them to do next with little justiification besides a shrug and "because: Magic!" as a reason. It culminated in a third film where you can not describe what anyone is doing at any time without sounding like a crazy person running the world's worst Dungeons and Dragons session. "The villain is hanging peasants so that they'll start singing a song... Once the song is sung, the Pirate Council will form! But the attendees all must have their Pieces of Eight, so the heroes have to sail off the edge of the world to get to the afterlife to get Jack Sparrow who is a pirate lord apparently, but he was eaten by a Kraken because he had the magic black spot curse of Davey Jones who had cut out his heart because he loved a sea goddess and was cursed himself, but now his magic heart was controlled by the villain who found it because of a magic compass and who wanted... Profitable trade routes, I guess?" It's like the whole thing was scripted with the logic of 80's era Sierra adventure games.

I had higher hopes for the next film since it was based on a pre-existing (and respected) adventure novel and so likely would make more sense, but for whatever reasons it just didn't gel. Jack Sparrow is best as a supporting character, and everything about it just came off rather flat. I only saw it once, and barely remember what it was about.

I'm honestly not against another film despite there being only one good one to this point. However, I'm skeptical that they've really worked out why the first film worked and the others didn't... I guess we'll wait and see,

How is she an astronomer if she can't study at the university? I mean suspension if disbelief has to stop at SOME point!

She's great! :)

I love the first POTC movie, but all the others are some kind of big wobbly mess in my head. I couldn't even tell if I've seen the last one. I think I did, but there's nothing that stuck.

How many of these stupid films has there been? Which one are we on now?
