"I did have to say no to it for the second series of Sherlock" he told Empire Online in a recent interview. "But if something could be worked out, that would be great."

However, he did reveal that he remains optimistic about a role in the movie, saying: "I'd like to think so. If there is any outside possibility, then that would be great. But I've learned not to think too much of hope too much about stuff. It will happen if it happens."

Freeman said of the original JRR Tolkien series, "I wasn't a fan of it as a kid but I did like the films. I think Ian McKellen is very good, and director Peter Jackson's a clever man. I thought what he did with them was interesting and entertaining."

"I reckon I could do a young Ian Holm. I think I could give that a go."

Damn he was an awesome choice to that :/ I still have hope that he can get the role anyway.
Lets hope that The Hobbit can still work out! And Ian McKellen must come back!

I still haven't watched The Lord of the Rings yet. After reading the book on The Hobbit, I can say if they follow it, it could be a great film.

While the Star Wars OT is my favorite trilogy of movies, LotR is likely considered better film making by a lot of folks.

With all the delays one never knows he could be done with Holmes and get the part.

While you are technically correct, Mars, that really is a minor point and not essential to the story. In the movie universe you could easily say he was in his thirties and from then to 111, he aged in appearance only about 20 years. If you look at LOTR, they messed with the timeline there as well, in the books, 17 years passed between the birthday party and Frodo actually leaving The Shire, while in the movies only a short time passed to avoid a myriad of issues, pacing, having to artificially age the characters, etc... Minor technical changes for the purposes of smoother storytelling in transitioning between book and movie is not only acceptable but in many cases the correct artistic choice. It will also be easier for audience members who are not intimately familiar with the minutia of the book to understand that it was a younger Bilbo. In fact, if you look at that quick flashback they showed of Bilbo finding the ring, they DID make Ian Holm noticeably younger in appearance than when he was in the present at the big birthday bash.
