Despite being released just a short while after Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and facing off against the likes of Captain America: The First Avenger, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has predictably stormed straight to the top of the list of 2011's highest grossing movies, and now sits comfortably at #3 behind Avatar and Titanic. Will any of the epic 2012 offering manage to beat this figure? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

BURBANK, CA, August 9, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 has now become the top-grossing release of 2011 in all categories: domestic box office, international box office and worldwide box office. The announcement was made today by Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, Dan Fellman, and President of International Distribution, Veronika Kwan-Rubinek. The last installment of the blockbuster motion picture franchise has broken numerous box office records around the world in just under a month since its July opening. As of August 8, the film had earned $344.8 million domestically and $801.5 million internationally, for an astounding worldwide box office gross of $1.146 billion, making Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 the third-highest-grossing film worldwide of all time.

Veronika Kwan-Rubinek stated, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 can truly be called a global phenomenon. The filmmakers and cast, who dedicated their talents to the success of these films for over a decade, share in this piece of cinema history. We congratulate and thank them all.”

Dan Fellman said, “This is another incredible milestone for the last chapter of this historic film series, and for the Harry Potter franchise as a whole. In a crowded and very competitive summer, it is a tribute to both the film and the people behind it that moviegoers are still turning out to enjoy it—whether for the first time or for a repeat viewing.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the final adventure in the Harry Potter film series. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reprise their roles as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Tom Felton, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Ciarán Hinds, John Hurt, Jason Isaacs, Matthew Lewis, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, David Thewlis, Julie Walters and Bonnie Wright. The film was directed by David Yates, and produced by David Heyman, David Barron and J.K. Rowling. Steve Kloves adapted the screenplay, based on the novel by J.K. Rowling. Lionel Wigram is the executive producer. It is the first Harry Potter film to be released in both 3D and 2D. Concurrently with its nationwide theatrical distribution, the film is being released in select IMAX® theatres. The film is being distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. It has been rated PG-13 for some sequences of intense action violence and frightening images.

@Grif LOL, I'd agree if this wasn't an official press release.
And out of the ones on the poll, I cab only see TDKR making anything close to what HP 7.2 has made.

@JLA2014 beaten to death? Caps done WAYYYY better then that piece of shit GL. It was released a month ahead of Cap and still hasn't made its budget back and that didn't have competition from the biggest franchise in the world.

none of them will beat it,but i think it'll be close for one of them.

3rd the dark knight rises $750,000,000+ (7th batman film, not strong enough villains,no joker no dollar)

2nd the avengers $800,000,000+ (1st time we've seen all these character on screen together, iron man films are very popular)

1st spider-man $1,000,000,000+ (4th spidey film,most popular character in the world,lizard new we haven't seen before & shot in 3d)

I'm just glad the "Pottermania" is finally over with. They're all decent movies but they couldve done it all in a trilogy instead of 23 or however many there are. Talk about milking a franchise.... A billion is a shitload of money. I wonder if the cast gets percentages of that...PAYDAY!!

Well at least this popular and well reviewed franchise has something big to show after ten years.

Unfortunately Twilight will probably take Potter's place, come November

Yeah it had a fantastic showing overseas, but it was disappointing in the USA,these are the 5 above and below all-time box office in USA
12. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) $380,262,555
13. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $377,019,252
14. Spider-Man 2 (2004) $373,377,893
15. The Passion of the Christ (2004) $370,270,943
16. Jurassic Park (1993) $356,784,000
17. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) $344,890,382
18. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) $344,666,713
19. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) $340,478,898
20. Finding Nemo (2003) $339,714,367
21. Spider-Man 3 (2007) $336,530,303
22. Alice in Wonderland (2010) $334,185,206
Partial list from IMDB.Com

Some really bad movies around this not to mention with the increase in prices of movie tickets and 3d sales. This is a disappointment for the final installment which had the potential to break upwards of $450-$500 million in the USA. Granted it had a tough summer with the likes of Captain America and Planet of the Apes and other blockbusters in the next few weeks afterwards. Just had the feel that Harry Potter fell off its fanbase having to wait so long.

Like grif said, this is not any real news.

@Rodimus9

They were not milking the franchise, there were 7 books, and they made the last book 2 movies so a total of 8 movies to cover the 7 books, and anyone who read the books can tell you they STILL left out TONS of information and some very cool moments.

Saying there were "23 movies or whatever" and that they could have done a trilogy is rediculous. A triology would be a joke and i know way cover even a qurter of the info, and mostly likely would have not done well at all. No way in hell a trilogy could give those books justice, hell 8 movies really didn't.
