Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, horror and science fiction author Stephen King, talked about the recently announced film trilogy and a TV series of his popular seven-novel series The Dark Tower.

He was asked about the casting, the general idea of making this series into a movie and what will a TV series look like.

- The Dark Tower is such a dense series — did you always think it needed more than a single movie or TV show treatment?

"I always thought it would take more than a single movie, but I didn’t see this solution coming — i.e., several movies and TV series. It was Ron [Howard] and Akiva [Goldsman]‘s idea. Once it was raised, I thought at once it was the solution."

- In a perfect world, who would play Roland? Eddie? Susannah? Jake?

"The Twilight cast, of course! Just kidding. I haven’t got as far as casting in my thoughts, but when I write about Susannah Dean, I always kind of see Angela Bassett in my mind’s eye. Mostly I just want good people in those parts. Ron Howard will find them, I’m sure."

- What about Ron Howard and NBC makes them a good fit for the franchise?

"When working as a director, Ron is very similar to the way I work as a writer. We both tell honest stories that have (I flatter myself) style and substance but not a lot of show-offy frills."

- And who would you want to play?

"I’d love to be the voice of Blaine the Mono."

- There’s a lot of blood in the series — how much is the TV series going to be censored? It likely would have been easier to join forces with a network without restrictions, à la HBO, no?

"I don’t see that as a problem at all! We’ll have just enough latitude to make a great series. I’ve worked in network TV before, and every time I was squeezed a little, it just made me look for creative solutions. Besides, I always like to play in the biggest auditorium available!"

Wolvie: So, what are your thoughts about this upcoming film trilogy and a planned TV show? Are you looking forward to it? Put your comments below...

I love it! I am the FIRST to comment on this, and will be the FIRST in line to watch it (2 weeks after it comes out because I hate movie crowds...)

Also, they don't need to show that much blood. They can have a lot of the killing happen off camera and leave it to your imagination. Sometimes that is scarier (since my imagination really scares me).

I've always been all about Viggo Mortensen as Roland. That guy's great. Joseph Gordon-Levitt should be Eddie. I like Anika Noni Rose as Susannah. I'm not really in the know about pre-teen actors for Jake.

I'm excited about all the possabilities for this movie.I'm curious if the movies will have a different vibe than the tv series, most tv shows work with much smaller budgets than movie do. Definatley an interseting way of tying these books together though.

The best King movies made have been made for tv with a few exceptions. I say kick it off with a mini series....then go into whatever series they want to do. Bassett I agree with. I always pictured her too. I always said Christian Slater as young Roland and Clint Eastwood as an older Roland but....I dont think that would work now.

BAD IDEA! With the exception of Shawshank Redemption, all of Stephen King's books made into movies or miniseries have sucked BIG TIME! Making movies of these great books really devalues them in the eyes of most Stephen King fans!

Stevie........from one of your biggest fans and "CONSTANT READERS"........PLEASE DON'T DO THIS! The Stand...ruined by a miniseries. It...ruined by a miniseries. The Shining...ruined by a miniseries. The Tommyknockers...ruined by a miniseries. Thinner...ruined by a movie. Needful things...ruined by a movie. Pet Sematary...ruined by a movie. Need I continue?!?!?

My choices for Roland are....
-#1,Guy Pierce(Memento, The Proposition, The Road)
-#2,Viggo Mortensen(The Road, LOTR, Hidalgo, Appalooza)
-#3,Thomas Jane(The Punisher, The Mist, plus he looked good as a cowboy in that picture of him as Jonah Hex, someone please post that pic)
-#4,Hugh Jackman(X-Men, The Fountain)

@Jojo Risin
your right Frank Darabonte is an excellent director, I'd be really happy if he got to direct The Dark Tower.

I'm just assuming that the tv series will be filler, and backstory. Like one season could be the story from Wizard and Glass. I can't see them taking up much time in a movie with that story, even though its a very important part of Roland's history, and what shaped him into who he is.

also, being on a network television station like NBC does nothing but worry the shit out of me.

Stephen King should play himself, not Blaine. That was a bizarre thing for him to say.

@ BrotherFromAnother

The Dark Tower TV series will be able to reuse the props, costumes, sets and special effects from the films. They may even shoot some of the films and TV episodes together. It's a safe bet that the episodes are going to look every bit as good.

I disagree w/ all of the naysayers. Its true that damn near every movie adaptation of a King book is terrible… but those were LOW BUDGET projects. Universal is going to get balls deep into Dark Tower and put all of their resources behind it.

GONNA
BE
EPIC

I can’t wait to see the Rose...

Guys, guys... plenty of King books have been turned into good, and sometimes even great, movies. Yeah,"Shawshank" is the first that comes to mind but what about, "Carrie", "The Shining", "Cujo", "Christeen", "Delorus Clayburn" & "The Green Mile" not to mention some of his direct screenplay stuff like, "Creepshow". So, is a good "Dark Tower" possible? Totally! -Fingers crossed.

CAST:
Roland: Jon Hamm
Eddie: Topher Grace
Susannah: Khandi Alexander
Jake: I have no idea.... Haley Joel Osment would have been perfect....10 years ago and without the cocaine. This would be a tough one- need to find a perfect kid for this role

Your thought???

Great great news!!! Luv Viggo in just about everthing he's done, but I just gotta go with Hugh on this. Hugh is just visually closer to the Roland I've always imagined, he could really kick ass in this part. And I have to say I am really pleased with Ron and Akiva. This is big ass budget stuff and these three guys have clout they'll need to get er done.

Glad to hear that the creator is happy with the direction of his greatest creation, just hope that it works well. I used to imagine Angela Bassett as Susannah/Odetta when I first read TDT, but that was pretty much a decade ago, I hate to say it, but I think she's aged out of that role. I can see Owen wilson playing Eddie, and most of us can see Viggo Mortenson as Roland, although I can see Josh Brolin as well.

Topher Grace in the Dark Tower = Epic Fail.

Damn...harsh words
I just thought his job in the "70's Show" showed a wise mouth, skinny kid - like Eddie in "the drawing of the three" - trying to score some drungs and not giving a shit... then, with the help and direction of Roland, he becomes a Gunslinger, but still remains a cocky prick at times... plus, seeing him mouth off to the Breakers of the Beams, and then get shot in the mouth...
I always thought of him while reading the books...
What about you Jojo, did you read the books?

rolanddeschain - 9/14/2010, 5:44 AM
clutchplayer@ Honestly dude, I don't think many of us who've read the dark tower think of Topher Grace as Eddie, sorry bro. I loved 70's show, too, but Eddie in TDT is just too big a role for him, imho. Eddie is such an important character in TDT, I just don't think of him when I think of Eddie, no offense

I AM SO FREAKIN EXCITED!! Im also really amaed at how many people thought of Viggo Mortenson as Roland. Always, as I read the series, that was the look of the character I pictured. And seriously, did any of you guys watch requiem for a dream? what about that white guy, the one with the black hair, for Eddie? Another mental picture of mine. That kid from the sixth sense for Jake, and I have no idea who could play Susannah...or Oy. (Yuk Yuk)

TobyHoetten - 9/14/2010, 8:43 AM
And I also always wanted to see this story as a cartoon series, same style as Afro Samurai maybe? Justice (not gonna make sense for anyone who hasn't seen it) always reminded me of Roland, for some reason.

Anyone think Rob Zombie could do a sweet remake of IT???

tobyhoetten@ those are some intriguing ideas, especially the rob zombie 'It' remake. that type of dark tower cartoon would be hot, I used to think if they made TDT like the old 'spawn' cartoon it would be epic, but that was like a decade ago, lol

Thankee-sai! Yah,Rob Zombie would do that pretty well id say. and yes, i looked up Bassett and she seems perfect. I wonder if they will have Susannah legless, or if that will be changed. Hope not, really. I am an avid SK reader, and My favorite part is how it all ties into other books. Eyes of the Dragon was my first one, and I was hooked after that. Got The Gunslinger for xmas and saw how great it was, bought the rest and read them all at least 5 times each so far. Ive always hoped that there would be a movie made, i dont care how shitty it is, ill still enjoy it! And SK will make an awesome Blaine, I completely understand why hed want to be that voice. Too cool! I cant wait to see Roland lay waste to that first town, screaming the whole time! I repeat, IM SOO EXCITED! FOR THE WHITE AND THE ELD!

Whod be Cuthbert

rolanddeschain - 9/16/2010, 5:31 AM
TobyHoetten@ yeah, would definitely like to see a more sinster remake of 'It', I did hear rumours of that happening in the future, hopefully rob zombie throws his name in the hat for that one.

Here was my fantasy cast from the other dark tower post. some of the names are of younger actors, so you may have to imdb them to match name to face

My fantasy cast:

Roland: Viggo Mortensen/Josh Brolin/Hugh Jackman
Young Roland: Josh Hutcherson/Logan Lerman

Eddie: I may get killed for this, but I can see Matthew Perry as Eddie, also Owen Wilson

Susannah/Odetta/Detta: Sanaa Lathan/Taraji P. Henson/Regina King/Tamala Jones/Jada Pinkett Smith

Jake: Whichever current hot child actor(too bad that kid who did Star Wars phantom menace is too old now, lol)

Walter/Marten: Gary Oldman/Daniel Day Lewis

Crimson King: John Malkovich/Tim Curry

Pere Callahan: Robert Patrick/Ed Harris

Steven Deschain: Joquin Phoenix/Daniel Day Lewis

Alain Johns: Rory Culkin

Cuthbert Allgood: Freddie Highmore

Susan Delgado: Ellen Page

Calvin Tower: John Lithgow

Aaron Deepneau: Ian Mckellan

Eldred Jonas: Mickey Rourke/Jeremy Irons/Sam Elliot

Clay Reynolds: Michael Biehn (reece from terminator1)

Roy Depape: Insert actor, lol. but for the hell of it, I nominate Billy Bob Thornton, :-)

@ Rolanddeschain--All good actors, but I cant see Owen Wilson as Eddie, say sorry. Ellen Page could be switched out with some blonde hottie, like Reese Witherspoon or Kirsten Dunst. I'd like to see some real hag for Rhea of the Coo, too. Anybody have any ideas?
I also think an adaptation of 'Eyes of a Dragon' would be fantastic, since it was the first book I read. Just watched 'Knight Riders' for the first time the other day, got a kick out of seeing King in that one. Got a funny voice though lol
