If you're looking for a biased review, look elsewhere.

I want to start by saying that I was a HUGE fan of the first three Pirates movies. Judge if you want, but you can't deny that "Curse of the Black Pearl" made piracy and swashbuckling a little bit cooler.

So when I heard there was a fourth installment planned, of course I was ecstatic.

On Stranger Tides just does not feel like a Pirates movie. I thought that the exclusion of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom's characters would be a welcome thought, but I quickly realized that people actually liked those characters.

Johnny Depp is always stellar as our favorite rum-swigging swashbuckler and Geoffrey Rush is still sublime as Hector Barbossa, but it felt like Penelope Cruz (Angelica) and Ian McShane's (Blackbeard) performances were a little phoned in.

Ian McShane as Edward Teach aka Blackbeard

Cruz and Depp had no chemistry whatsoever. Almost like watching two pieces of paper try to feed off of the other's ability.

Rob Marshall tried to gain a little bit more of that supernatural element we saw in Curse of the Black Pearl, but there was too damn much going on. Zombiefied henchman? Vampire-esque mermaids? Blackbeard resurrects the dead? Let's get real. Granted, the movie centers around the search for the Fountain of Youth, but we don't need all these other tacked-on distractions.

And the soundtrack...it was all tracks from Dead Man's Chest and At World's End with tweaks and adjustments every now and again. Almost as if the composer just said "Ah, to Hell with it."

After a 4 year wait, I was a little let down. I didn't have my hopes up for this like I did for Thor (which did NOT disappoint), but I expected a little better than what we've been given.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides gets 7 hard nipples out of 10. Good, but could have been better.

Cruz can't act worth a damn. That's why everyone will miss Knightly so much in this. Plus, she has horse teeth and a trout spout. McShane looks epic as Blackbeard though... i'm sorry to hear that he phoned it in.

I'm going to see it tomorrow, but all I've heard is bad things about it. It's a shame, Johnny Depp said he'd only return to do another film if the fans liked this one, so this may be the end of Cap'n Jack :/

Ecks- I know right? Like the man normally exudes epicness. What the hell would have made him ham it up like that?

Grif, now that's just uncalled for ;)

nice review, I too loved the other 3, and I even enjoyed the convoluted betrayal scheme in 3. I can't wait to check it out.

7 out of 10 with that review? Either your scoring is skewed or you just gave it a couple points for no reason.

I disagree with this review. First of all, the soundtrack was amazing. You really think Hans freakin Zimmer would skimp out?? There are of course some re-imagined versions of a few of the old songs becuase it is indeed a franchise, but there are also some veryyy very cool new stuff including a bad-ass blackbeard theme.

Also, if you actually know your Greek mythology, the part with the mermaids is amazing. They are actually sirens who in Greek mythology, do EXACTLY what they did in the film. For those who haven't seen the movie, this part of the film is freaking AWESOME. Perfectly done if you ask me. Also, the fact that it's called ON STRANGER TIDES does give you a sense there will be more supernatural, and I for one loved that element.

That being said, it did feel different than the other Pirates. I won't say anymore. Just see it my friends.

Oh and guys, don't sit there and judge a movie after just seeing the % on Rotten Tomatoes...critics are pretentious pricks. You be the judge.

It does have a diff feel to it. Depp and rush still work, but yeah Cruz can't act. She "acts" the same in every movie. I still didnt miss bloom or knightly...

@WittySupername Nope. Depp would not sign on if that was true. I saw it and this is not the case.

I thought all of the performance were pretty phoned in, McShane was just as good as everyone else, but no one was really putting much heart into it in my opinion.

I thought the biggest let down were all the damn subplots. How much filler do you need in a single movie? I thought for sure that the "other" couple was being set up to take the place of Bloom and Knightly, but that went nowhere, I'm not even sure what exactly happened with them; I do know that bringing them back will be nonsensical.

If you are a fan the series then you should go see it just so you can make your own opinion. If you don't really care about the series, then do not waste your money, it is nothing special, and really not indicative of the franchise.

On the topic of the "other" couple: Did anyone else think that was headed for an Atlantis tie in for the next movie?

Yeah, after the credits he gets recruited to the Avengers by Namor.

I watched this movie last night. And I will have to say I loved it. It is my favorite since the Black Pearl. Blackbeard was awesome. I will agree Angelica was meh but the rest of the movie tied in nicely.
