Flash Gordon is the hero of a science fiction adventure comic strip originally drawn by Alex Raymond, which was first published on January 7, 1934. After several adaptation over the years, the character is best known for the 1980 movie and recent TV show back in 2007. Since then, Eisner has reported that he's signed on to direct another version of the character on the big screen and this time, in 3D. Here, he gives a brief update on the status of that movie.

"Flash Gordon is a total passion project for me," Eisner said in a recent interview with Fearnet. "We've just extended the option and the studio's very committed in trying to make it happen."

"It's just a gigantic 3D experience with years of prep. It’s one of those movies you get once in a lifetime to make and for me it's been a passion of mine since I was a kid."

"If I could pick and just control everything I would love to make 'Flash Gordon,' it's really kind of my dream job, but it's multi-year, in terms of writing and designing."

When directors have real passion for the project it fills me with hope. But it could always turn out bad as different people see characters differently. Flash Gordon has the advantage of being quite obscure so they have wriggle room as long as they dont go the SyFy channel route.

I am sorry this will only work if they cast Sam J Jones in the lead and Queen does the soundtrack! =D

@ Anil
Thats what SyFy do...
take The Phantom for example, that could've been really cool.

I was about 9 when the movie came out. I got the soundtrack on cassette tape for Christmas that year. I wore that thing out. I think that's why I'm a Queen fan now...to say nothing about getting me really into classic sci-fi stuff.

One way I think this movie could actually work would be to set it as a period piece. Aliens want to take over the Earth in 1934!

"Clytus I'm bored, what plaything can you offer me today?"

"An obscure body in the SK system your majesty....the inhabitantants refer to it as the planet Earth....."

No one but the pure in heart may find the golden grail oh-ooh... oooh-oooohhh... FLASH!

(that was Brian May, not Freddie Mercury, FYI)

Flash Gordon is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my teenhood. I haven't seen the syfy series, but I'll take your word for it, guys. If this thing gets to be done, they better make it good, or else...

Is that the picture of the director, Eisner? I thought he's that guy from the Leverage series with Tim Hutton? You know, the big guy, the fighter. But that wouldn't make sense, would it?
