David Goyer Talks Ghost Rider 2

Goyer spoke exclusively to MTV about the next Ghost Rider movie, which will NOT be a reboot...

We already know that Ghost Rider 2 will be based on the script David Goyer wrote several years back..but significantly more family friendly than his pretty hard R treatment. But we were never sure if the next movie would continue on the story of Nic Cage's Johnny Blaze, or be a complete reboot..until now...

"It's not exactly a reboot," said Goyer, who's currently hard at work on his "FlashForward" television series. "I hate to say it's more realistic, because he's got a flaming skull for a head, but it's a bit more stripped down and darker. It's definitely changing tone. What Casino Royal was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to Ghost Rider"

The Ghost Rider sequel is scheduled to "roll before cameras next year," according to Goyer, who also said that Nicolas Cage is currently still attached to the lead role of Johnny Blaze.

"This story picks up eight years after the first film," said Goyer. "You don't have to have seen the first film. It doesn't contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we're pretending that our audience hasn't seen the first film. It's as if you took that same character where things ended in the first film and then picked it up eight years later—he's just in a much darker, existential place."

"My script is out there on the Internet," he said. "We're not changing much from it. It'll be significantly the same script."

Sounds like an Incredible Hulk style "requel" to me. No bad thing. Sure the first movie was pretty bad, but nothing that can't be rectified with a better script...lets hope Goyer's need to PG13 it down doesn't mean we don't see that happen.

ClintEastwood- I'd prefer getting Jen Garner for a sequel to Elektra than getting Nic Cage for another CBM. That's how much i liked Cage's interpretation of GR.

SithforHire- They did think that the first one seemed perfect before shooting it.

Poni, Im not actually sure where I first came across that word...but it certainly suits Incredible Hulk, seems to suit what Ghost Rider 2 will be.

Ummmm....I don't think my commentary is really needed. HA HA HA! That's just.... beautiful.

Nicholas Cage I think is best cast as a sleezy dirt bag. He just looks like a sneaky [frick]er who would steal your shit and have bad breath. A lot like his character in Raising Arizona. I don't think he'll ever find a better role to fit him. Nicholas Cage as an action star is totally unbelieveable because I can't get passed the image of him getting caught putting the baby that he stole back into the crib he stole it from. Con-Air can suck on my Con-Dick.

Clive Owen would be great as Ghost Rider, Shoot 'Em Up was awesome!

I think Depp would make a good Ghost Rider, he was first on Marvel's list to play him the first time, i think he'd do a good job.

Yeah I dont get the big deal with Con Air either. A few explosions and some bad hair..big deal. Cage can be great though. Not only Raising Arizona. Leaving Las Vegas, Wild At Heart, Birdy...he just phones it in these days cos hes a lazy bastard!

God why is everyone so in love with Depp!? Yeah he's good at playing Keith Richards but has anyone seen the secret window? God that movie sucked... Ghost Rider is about a guy who gets demon powers, this movie should be dark and gritty like the first Blade movie. i don't think this movie calls for a reboot but at least make this one good. The first movie was a pile of crap. Blackheart got completely screwed over. Oh and Clive Owen is awesome and would make a great Magneto or Batman.

SithforHire- Yep, that sounds better LOL :P

I don't know who came up with Clive Owen for GR first, but the guy's a genius obviously. As for Cage, the only film of his i would ever buy at full price is Family Man. That film was awesome!!! The rest is all meh to me.

mskyle@ he has, but ghost rider should have been darker from the beginning. it was the studios fault for messing it up in the first place. its not like trying to make fantastic four darker which is stupid. i see this as hollywood finally realizing that dark characters should be dark and stay dark.
selinakyle
selinakyle - 11/4/2009, 11:53 AM
they wont do that.Diluting is better for them so they can get the rating they want ergo major success at the box office. Hell the comic books out now, i wouldn't even let my lil sister read it. Selfish, greedy and lazy. We should go there and kick their collective asses!

TheNameIsBetty - 11/4/2009, 11:56 AM
"Pretty hard R treatment"? What is he referring to?

I thought the first one was pretty awesome. They're just doing what The Dark Knight did. First, they set up the character as who he is in the first movie. Now, they are putting him into his "world".
