Channing Tatum's Death In G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Is The Real Cause For Delay

Paramount pushed back the release date for G.I. Joe: Retaliation so that they could convert it to 3D, right? Deadline is reporting that Duke's (Tatum) death is the real reason behind the delay.

“The 3D is an excuse as to not reveal the Tatum of it all.” - Source for Deadline

When the G.I. Joe sequel vacated the prime summer real estate for what Paramount insists was a move to add 3D to the film this left many scratching their heads. Since that news rumors have been circulating that there could've been other reasons for the delay. Deadline has now jumped into the fray with new information from their sources. They say Paramount grew concerned when they saw John Carter falter at the box office, but...
“Also Channing Tatum had a breakout spring, starring in The Vow and 21 Jump Street. In our first screening of the film the reaction from audiences was good but with 2 big concerns: 1) They didn’t like the fact that Channing and The Rock really didn’t have any time to develop a friendship before Channing died, and 2) Why wasn’t it going to be in 3D? We went back and shot another week with Channing to develop more of his story with The Rock, which made the film play much better. But we didn’t have the time to be in 3D.

“Then a week ago Battleship basically had the same performance as John Carter – $60M-$70M U.S. and just over $200M international. That was just a wake-up call that said to us we need to offer the best version of the film irrespective of summer market share to ensure the best possible performance. And not being in 3D will cost us a ton of business internationally.”

Deadline goes on to say that Channing Tatum's next film Magic Mike was a bit of concern as well. The film about male strippers is set to open in June, and that would've put it up against G.I. Joe. Paramount figured Tatum fans would rather see him in a g-string than a military uniform.

Meanwhile, other sources tell Deadline that G.I. Joe 2 director Jon M. Chu is “shellshocked” over the release date move. Paramount kept him on a very tight leash from the beginning of the production. Among other things, they wouldn’t let him bring onboard David Nicksay, who has worked with Chu as executive producer on the Step Up movies and the Justin Bieber documentary.

G.I. Joe Retaliation stars Channing Tatum, D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, and will be released June 29, 2012 sometime in March.

I'd watch this if it was G.I.Joe, not Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity New World Order bullshit.

I know Channing Tatum is a shitty actor but I mean killing off Duke is like killing off Captain America in the Avengers. His character is extremely important in the series. I mean every kid had a Duke action figure when they were young.

Well where I live whenever a movie comes out in 3D they don't offer up the 2D version. I think the last time I got the choice was with Toy Story 3.

So I've had to watch Thor, Cap, Avengers, Conan and TF3 in 3D. TF3 was the best in 3D for me.

I wonder if the success of 3D in other international markets is due to preference or circumstance

^agreed, they realized they had to make it better or they were gonna lose money.

@tonychu I actually was never a fan of Duke nor did I have his figure. Flint and Snake Eyes were always my favorites. Personally Snake Eyes and Stalker were just as important as Duke.

They should just shoot more footage of Channing Tatum in front of green screen and edit the movie so he doesn't die. He just spends the rest of the movie looking over peoples shoulders and not saying anything in the background.

i knew it, killing Duke is a bad thing and even the mighty The Rock can't pull that dismay among followers of that film. as far as i'm concerned they can push this back farther than they wishes and it would still be a dismal.

There's going to be MORE Tatum? That seals it....in a lead coffin, encased in concrete, deep in the ocean, on one of the moons of Jupiter.

No thanks.

I guess Paramount just got chills realizing that they had a Stinker in their hands and knowing that Channing Tatum was gonna die in the movie BUT he was gonna strip in the following week... ?

besides Channing has had two profitable movies this year, so my guess is that sex sells after all !

^agreed^ He was AWFUL in the first movie. I was almost glad they were killing off Duke just so we weren't subjected to Tatum's horrible interpretation of the character. I would go to see this only for Snake Eyes and maybe watch the Rock blow stuff up.

I heard that in this movie, Snake-eyes' mask will have a mouth that is open with a tongue hanging out and that every time he comes on the screen, you'll hear "WAZZAAAAAAAAP!" Seriously, they better make some BIIIIG improvements on that excremental explosion that was the first film.

Lord Loki has spoken

To be post-converted into 3D and rereleased after a year?

Paramount is covering. This movie has serious problems.

21 Jump Street was just awful and I wasn't impressed with Tatum, but to kill Duke is just sacrilege as far as GI Joe goes. As already mentioned, it makes no sense to kill off the leader of the team. No different than killing off Cyclops in an X-Men film or Cap in an Avengers film. Truly disappointing and the film looked much better than the first based on what we have seen so far.

Isn't the death of a major character at least worthy of a "Spoiler Alert"?

I watch one trailer for a movie and try not to see too much of what happens in the movie. Trailers really do just reveal too much lately. But then I end up reading about it here...
