With many of the stars from the critically panned first installment of the franchise not returning, it looks like studio bosses over at Paramount have decided to find a leading man who will put bums on seats. Here is an excerpt from the report over at Variety.

Fresh off "Fast Five," Duane Johnson is back in action realm, signing on for a role in the sequel to "G.I. Joe." Jon Chu, who brought "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" to the world, is directing the 3D update, titled "G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes."


Deadline meanwhile added the following details:

Johnson's role is a character named Roadblock. I'm also hearing that Channing Tatum is a good bet to return.

I actually quite like Dwayne as an actor. He's clearly no Oscar winner but he's good for action/comedy and has the right attitude. But this movie is beyond his help, it has so many nails in it's coffin it's time to bury it or let it burn!

Can he really be worse than Channing Tatum? At least the Rock has an actual vocal range aside from Tatum`s boring and uninteresting performances.

@OReilly - now that was uncalled for! Your giving Tatum far too much credit. "Boring and uninteresting" are words he can only dream of seeing in a review of his performances! I'd rather sit and watch a brick for 8hrs than see a trailer for any movie he's in!

I was always under the impression from the comics anyways that either Duke or Snake Eyes were the "lead". Nothing against Rock guys decent actor you know him joining not a bad thing but as the lead really? just get rid of Tatum and replace him with an actor who can actually and has some range. Tone the futuristic weapons crap down. Change mouth that SnakeEye's has on his costume for some weird reason. Seriously not looking forward to this, but I guess I'll wait till I see some actual footage or hear some good casting before I make up my mind about this movie.

meh... Yall are being pretty hard on Tatum Channing. He is a shite actor, and he was awful in G.I. Joe, but I thought the movie FIGHTING was at least watchable...

i actually loved gi joe. the only thing i hated was channing tatum. the guy can't act at all. snake eyes and storm shadow was the only reason i went see it really. i'm looking forward to the sequel.

YES!!!! I wanted this casting months ago, but for a different role. Nonetheless it's a great choice. Not a great actor necessarily, but a lot of charisma.

Don't get why everyone hated the first one it wasn't great but it had some cool action scenes, and really that was all I was looking for out of it. You don't go to a GI Joe movie for the dialogue.
