Michael Bay is a director that you either love or hate. His resume is pretty much pure action filmography. Mr. Bay is known for creating EXPLOSIONS. I believe he does this very well. He has a knack for creating extremely dangerous stunts to give a sense of realism. My issue with Mr. Bay is his obsession with transformers. I understand that it has made him lots and lots of money but seriously can you move on from the robotic scene.
Personally I believe that his talents could be used on another platform. His association with Hasbro gives him access to a lot of different venues. I think that G.I. Joe is the PERFECT movie series for him to film. Peter Berg practically copied his transformers approach. Bay has shown that he has a strong military connection when filming. G.I. Joe =military. Unfortunately, John M Chu is currently at the helm of the Joe movie series. Mr. Chu’s resume includes the Step Up movie series and Justin Bieber Never Say Never. Chu is definitely not qualified for an action movie series. His first attempt at the action genre was G.I. Joe Retaliation which was very dull and boring compared to The Rise of Cobra. Now I’m not saying that Rise of Cobra was exceptionally good but when you take it for what it was it was pretty darn entertaining and a lot better than Retaliation. Retaliation had some of the most ridiculous character development which in the end served absolutely no purpose.
If Michael Bay took control of this movie series he would reinvigorate it for sure. Seeing huge battles with Cobra troops and Joes from Bays perspective and format would be something to see. He has made Transformers a billion dollar franchise. I believe that he can make G.I. Joe one as well with the right direction and story. Even if you hate Bays movies please at least acknowledge his stunt work. Bad Boys 2, Pearl Harbor, the Island, Transformers etc. All of those movies had action scenes that were absolutely crazy and intense. For example the highway chase scene in Transformers 3 and the whole end fight sequence of transformers 1. Both were epic in every way shape and form. Bay almost died filming the Island; if that doesn’t scream dedication then I don’t know what does.
Overall, I believe that Michael Bay needs to be hired immediately for G.I. Joe 3. The movie franchise has yet to reach its overall potential which is really sad especially after two movies. He knows how to direct a war style film which In essence is what G.I. Joe is a war between two groups that have opposing ideals. LET’S GET THE BALL ROLLING MR. BAY.
