G.I. JOE Character SNAKE EYES Getting His Own Spinoff Movie From BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Writer

There have been rumblings for while that the G.I. Joe franchise will return to the big screen and it appears as if things are going to kick off with popular character Snake Eyes receiving the spotlight.

We finally have some good news for fans of the G.I. Joe franchise because it's been revealed today that the writer of Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast movie Evan Spiliotopoulos is in talks to pen a standalone movie for Snake Eyes. The Wrap claims that he's actually working on G.I. Joe 3 but The Hollywood Reporter is adamant that Snake Eyes is being developed and they're the safer bet.

The first two G.I. Joe movies were met with mixed to negative reviews from fans and critics alike and neither performed as strongly at the box office as Paramount Pictures probably would have liked.

For those of you unfamiliar with Snake Eyes, he first appeared in the 1980s during Hasbro and Marvel's relaunch of the toyline. He never speaks or shows his face (which will make casting the character interesting) and his archenemy is Storm Shadow, a ninja who just so happens to be his brother. He also has a pet wolf known as Timber and it will be really interesting seeing him get the spotlight here.

Then again, it sounds like the project is in the very early stages of development so time will tell!

@Cayde6 - This should be the basis for the movie. This comic was actually the subject of one of my first fancasts on the site.

You know, if Ray Park comes back then I’ll support this film’s existance

@LEVITIKUZ - If Ray Park comes back it won't do very well. He's not a big name and I honestly don't think much of the general audience will watch a film based on the character.

They need to recast the role with a big name. Keanu Reeves would be my choice. He's not the best actor, which doesn't really matter for this role, but he's got the physicality down and he's made a really good comeback in recent years. If it's an origin story then they can film it in such a way that we'd never see his face and then after the accident he can wear bandages until he dons his trademark outfit.

Or they can keep Ray Park and have a strong supporting cast much like what Solo is doing. I'm not the biggest fan of most of the actors that are in Solo, but they're big enough names to get people interested.

Personally I prefer the first choice.

@TerryTerrapin - Just get Ray Park for the stunts and shit. Have a bigger-name actor for the face (if they decide to show it).

I'm sure Park would accept, as he probably isn't up to much other than Con appearances these days.

@TerryTerrapin - they need to cast younger, not a 50 year old man, love Keanu, but no

@Timerider84 - Oh, yeah, if we're going with an origin story it would need to be a younger actor, good catch.

@TerryTerrapin @L0RDbuckethead - You both realize Snake-Eyes has no face in fact looks worse than Deadpool's, right?

Only a few know what he looked liked and what happened.

@Cayde6 - Yes, we do. Which is why I said they could film it so we never see his face. My point about hiring a big name is so that the film is actually successful. If they bring Ray Park back, it's gonna flop. The only logical choice is to hire a big name, so it'll at least have a chance of doing well. We'll know what the actor looks like, but it adds to the mystery of the character by keeping his face hidden. Much like Dredd did with Karl Urban.

@TerryTerrapin - But wouldn't that just be a waste of money when they never see his face or hear him talk through the whole movie. Most actors would not agree to that except for a few Keanu is older now younger during Point Break would have been perfect.
But now I'd suggest someone younger if there going his Origin movie. If its a spin-off who knows what route they want to take it in. Not much has been revealed so guess will have to wait.

@Cayde6 - Not really. An actor doesn't just rely on their face or voice, they use their eyes and body language. The latter can actually say a lot about a character. Someone posted a gif where Snake Eyes is holding a sword to the Rock's groin. You can't see under his mask, but I reckon he was smirking underneath it.

For example in a really emotional scene where Snake Eyes finds out who killed his mentor, his hands clench up into a fist and his chest heaves, indicating anger. Or he bows his head when someone dies, indicating sorrow. It's not just about how they act, it's also about how we and the characters interpret their actions.

I imagine quite a few actors would jump at the chance to accept a role like this because it's challenging and it'd help them grow as an actor.

Luke Bracey played Cobra Commander in Retaliation. It was probably for the money, but he probably had fun playing the character.
Matador
Matador - 5/12/2018, 5:07 PM
@TerryTerrapin - But in that sense playing Cobra Commander we still hear a voice but I couldn't tell since the last guy.

As Snake-Eyes goes it could be played by a stunt man who already knows martial arts would be cheaper in the long run for the movie itself. And they can spend the rest on the visuals or other actors involved who are chatty & showing there face.

It's not like V for Vendetta where he kept the mask thru the whole movie but underneath you knew who he was from the actor's voice.
TerryTerrapin
TerryTerrapin - 5/12/2018, 5:34 PM
@Cayde6 - You're missing my point. Hiring a stunt man may be cheaper but in the long run it will cost them more because no one is gonna watch a film starring Generic Stunt Man. Films about ninja's don't really do well anymore even if they have a major name attached.

Just look at Ninja with Scott Adkins. Decent actor, but he's not a big enough name to draw in the general audience.

John Wick cost 30 million to make. Let's say Snake Eyes is 40 million. They could get away with making it for that much and raking in a profit, but only if they cast a big name to play the character.
Matador
Matador - 5/13/2018, 8:08 AM
@TerryTerrapin - I know what your saying I just don't agree with it.

Ray Park was a stunt man turned actor if there just pasting a name to put seats in the theater I see your point. But it doesn't have to be like that. That's all I'm saying.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 5/14/2018, 9:58 AM
@Cayde6 - What about for flashback scenes or what if they decide to show the time he had his face surgically repaired, only to have it f.ucked up again right after? I'd love to see something like this:

He wasn't born deformed, so yes, you could totally hire a bigger-name actor to show Snake Eyes' face.
Matador
Matador - 5/14/2018, 10:36 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - Well they might as well hire this guy if his just gonna get his face [frick]ed up again

later they can just cgi the eye correctly. And make sure WB does it.
