The Next DC Comics Superhero Television Series From The CW

Deadline reports that The CW has begun development on a series based on the 1939 pulp hero, The Avenger. The character has appeared in the DC Comics 1975 miniseries Justice Inc. from Jack Kirby and a 1989 miniseries of the same name.

Created in 1939 by Paul Ernst (Note: Kenneth Robeson was a pen name used by many writers working at Street and Smith Publications), The Avenger first appeared in the pulp magazine titled Justice Inc. The story followed Richard Benson, a millionaire globetrotter, who becomes a crimefighting superhero in the wake of his wife Alicia and daughter Alice's abduction and murder. The trauma of the ordeal turn Benson's face and hair white and paralyzes the muscles in his face, giving him the ability to alter its appearance to a degree.

The proposed show in development at The CW is reshuffling the origin of The Avenger in a significant way. Instead of following Richard Benson, the tv show will follow Alice Benson, who "in the wake of her parents’ murder, discovers she possesses a superpower as a result of genetic bio-hacking which allows her to transform her appearance at will." The show, described as a "an updated Biopunk version of The Avenger [1939]", will focus on Alice's investigation of her parent's death and how she acquired her metahuman abilities. Neal Baer (Under the Dome) and Conde Nast Entertainment are developing the series, with Deric Hughes and Benjamin Raab (Warehouse 13) writing the pilot. The project is currently untitled, but rest assured Marvel fans, it probably won't be titled The Avenger.

Perhaps the character will be able to cross over with Arrow, The CW's most watched program and the Flash television series that's also in development.

I don't understand what DC is doing. Are these tv shows (Arrow, Flash, Gotham, and this) part of the DCCU or in other words in the same universe as Man of Steel?

There are all kinds of problems with this... first off, the general public is probaby a little over the "billionaire hero" angle after all the Batman and Ironman movies. Secondly, they've altered it so much from the original, that it's pointless to even link the two. Thirdly, "The Avenger" is obviously a way to spin off Marvel's success considering almost every Thor and CA commericial plasters the word avenger across te screen. Thirdly, The Avenger is such a mash up of Bruce Wayne and Clayface that it will feel like some lower tier Batman knockoff like Birds of Prey or the proposed Graysons show. Lastly, seriously guys... 100s of DC characters to choose from and they dig this up????

If they're gonna do this, they should make it a period action drama and stick to the source... people might dig a retro hero.

Love Kirby's art. Still great even by today's standards.

I still have the 1st issue of Justice Inc. I bought way back in 1975. I loved the idea of this character when I read this comic as a kid. Too bad they are gonna do what they do best in LaLa land and change it all around until it doesn't resemble the original in anyway!

I dont know how i feel about this. most things that are based on pulp heroes dont seem to go over that well. look at Green Hornet, The Lone Ranger, the Phantom, and The Shadow. They have not had a succesful adaptation in the last thiry years

A biopunk series with a female superhero? Sounds great. Will probably end up being better than AoS.

Nubase@ The ratings are just fine for AOS, so if you see it as a failure, that's fine, but it doesn't mean it is for a lot of others.

That being said, I really enjoy Arrow, but this show sounds like a a train wreck. I remember reading a few of The Avenger comics and it sounds like they are going to completely change it, so not sure why they would even try to promote it as an adaptation of The Avenger.

Nubase, I'll use you to represent all trolls making asinine comments..."Oh shut the hell up."
I like Arrow and AoS, I want DC to grow their universe thru TV, but this concept is Stupid. (Grif said it right^) I'd be fine with the original concept being presented, but the story presented here sounds like shit. Stick to the original concept, maybe give the show a different name cuz it does smack of desperation. But with all DC has in their stable, why this? More WB cheap assed incompetence.
