First off, this video is more or less everyone's reaction to last year's
Green Lantern film:
However, it wasn't the worst CBM of last year (that title goes to
Transformers: Dark of the Moon). The film was a big letdown to me as a GL fan. Reynolds was decent as Hal, but Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard were giant miscasts and the CGI and design of the suit was pretty bad. One of the good things about it was Mark Strong as Thaal Sinestro (because its impossible for Mark Strong to act bad). Anyway, I hope you think that this cast is an improvement over the film.
Anyway, my choice for director is Duncan Jones, director of
Moon and
Source Code. Even though he has only directed two feature films and one short, he has more than proven himself to be a quality director. If he ever gets the chance to direct a CBM, give him
Green Lantern.
Anyway, here's the cast.
Heroes:
Chris Pine as Hal Jordan: A test pilot for Ferris Aircrafts who becomes the Green lantern of Space Sector 2814 after his predecessor, Abin Sur, dies. Although many were skeptical of him at firs,t Hal has proven himself and is widely regarded as the greatest Green Lantern of them all.
Reason for Casting: I don't know what the WB execs were smoking when they casted Reynolds as Hal. Chris is and will always be the superior pick for Hal. He has a charming quality to him and is good at doing both comedy and drama. He basically played Hal in
Star Trek. I cannot stress how perfect Pine is for Hal.
Nathan Fillion as Martin Jordan: Hal's father, whom he love very much. Martin was a test pilot for Ferris Aircrafts and died in a crash while testing an experimental fighter jet. Hal witness the event firsthand and the memory has haunted him ever since.
Reason for Casting: Every diehard Green Lantern fan boy have always wanted Nathan for Hal. I on the other, have never really seen the appeal. I think he is more suited to play Hal's father. Fillion is a very accomplished actor and would do justice in the role.
David Bowie as Abin Sur: Hal's predecessor, whose ship crashed on Earth. Mortally wounded, he sent his ring out to find a successor. It pick Hal Jordan, and brought him to the crashed vessel. In his dying moments, Sur told Hal that he was a person who was without fear and was chosen to be the next Green lantern.
Reason for Casting: Even though the role of Abin Sur is a brief one, I needed somebody who had a certain voice and presence to him. Bowie posses both and isn't that bad of an actor. He did a great job in
Labyrinth and
The Prestige.
Mila Kunis as Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire: President of Ferris Aircrafts and Hal's on-and-off love interest. Carol was the host of the Zamoran's queen, the Star Sapphire, giving her another persona and powers similar to a Green Lantern's.
Reason for Casting: Almost everyone on the site can agree that Blake Lively as Carol was a miscast. She doesn't fit the character and isn't attractive (IMO). I've previously casted Mila in my
Batman cast as Catwoman, but not alot of people were fond of the choice. I think she'd do wonders with Carol, having proven herself as an actress in
Black Swan.
Steven Yuen as Thomas Kalmaku: A mechanic at Ferris Aircrafts and Hal's friend. He is one of the few people that knows that Hal is the Green Lantern.
Reason for Casting: I a big fan of
The Walking Dead, and Yuen's character on the show, Glenn, reminds me alot of Tom. I'd he fit this role like a glove.
Morris Chestnut as John Stewart: An architect who was chosen to be Hal Jorda's back up if anything should have happen to him. John had fail to prevent the destruction of the planet Xanshi, which has plagued him with guilt.
Reason for Casting: After seeing his work on
V, I'd think Chestnut would make a pretty good Stewart, or at least a
Justice League-esque Stewart,
Bradley Cooper as Guy Gardner: The second person elected to be Jordan's backup. He has gone through various changes, including possessing a Qwardian Yellow Power Ring and once having Vuldarian powers.
Reason for Casting: Even though this is a pretty overused pick, I think Cooper is more than perfect to play Guy. He can play an asshole, but a likable asshole. Just check out his work.
Joseph Gordron-Levitt as Kyle Rayner: A freelance artist who became the last Green Lantern after an insane Hal destroyed the Corps and became the villain Parallax. Rayner's power ring was unique since it did have a weakness to the color yellow.
Reason for Casting: I decided not to use Milo Ventimiglia for Rayner, since its a bit unoriginal. Levitt is a very solid actor and played a similar character in
500 Days of Summer (and by similar, I mean occupation-wise).
Mickey Rourke (voice and motion capture) as Kilowog: The Green Lantern of Space Sector 674, and Hal's friend. He is responsibl;e for training new recruits, who he refers to as "poozers".
Reason for Casting: When I was reading
Green Lantern: Secret Origin, I kept imagining Mickey's voice coming out of Kilowog. The dude more than fits the requirements for him.
James McAvoy (voice and motion capture) as Tomar-Re: the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2183, and who is "neighbors" with Hal.
Reason for Casting: The dude's a brilliant actor and has never given a bad perfromance. IMO, he'd be a great Tomar.
Natalie Portman as Katman Tui: A Korugan who replaced Thaal Sinestro as the Green Lantern of Space Sector 1417. She has been romantically linked to John Stewart.
Reason for Casting: Natalie's a great actress who I think would shine in this role. And she's deserves a better role than Jane Foster.
Noomi Rapace (voice and motion capture) as Boodikka: A tall, muscular, and agressive Green Lantern who is skilled at using her power ring.
Reason for Casting: As I have stated before, I'm a big fan of the
Milleniym trilogy. Noomi has shown herself from time to time to be aggresive and violent in the series. She's got one characteristic of Boodikka down. Plus, she's a damn fine actress.
Topher Grace (voice and motion capture) as G'Nort: An incompetent Green Lantern who resembles a dog. He is a generally loathed member, and only became a Green Lantern because a relative of his was a famous member.
Reason for Casting: I'm probably the only person on this site who has forgiven him for
Spiderman 3. It wasn't his fault that the movie failed. Anyway, I think he's a great fit for G'Nort since he's already played the loveable loser on
That 70's Show.
Anthony Hopkins (voice) as Ganthet: The leader of the Guardians of the Universe, who created the Corp in orer to maintain order in the universe. Unlike his fellow Guardians, Ganthet posses a more human-like personality and is capable of showing emotions.
At this point, everyone will point out that I have a lot of double castings in my cast. Well I have some news for you: I simply do not care. Anyway, Hopkins has a voice and presence to him that is perfect for Ganthet.
Villains:
Gary Oldman as Thaal Sinestro: The former Green Lantern of Space Sector 1417, who used his ring to conquer his people and became a dictator in his own twisted way to maintain order. When the Guardians found out about his actions, they stripped him of his ring and banished him to the anti-matter universe of Qward. During his exile, he had the weaponeers of Qward make him a yellow power ring, the only color that Green had no effect on. Escaping, he now hold a vendetta against all Corps members and made it his vendetta to destroy the organization that he was once loyally dedicated to.
Reason for Casting: Everyone has to admit that Mark Strong as Sinestro was the only good thing about
Green Lantern. Anyway, Oldman has a rich history of playing heroes and villains, and he can play them down to a "T". He would own the role of Sinestro with ease.
Sam Rockwell as Hector Hammond: A private consultant for Ferris Aircrafts, who determines to be Carol Ferris's boyfriend (and she doesn't reciprocates these feelings). While investigating the ruins of Abin Sur's ship, Hammond was dowsed with radiation from the ship's meteor fragment core. The radiation gave him telekinesis and telepathy, yet drastically increasing the size of his head, rendering him unable to speak and forcing him to use a specially made chair to keep his balance.
Reason for Casting: Everyone can also agree that Peter Sarsgaard's hammond sucked. Plus the post mutation version of him looked like Ron frickin' Jeremy. Rockwell would be a perfect
Secret Origins, as he can play sleazy (as seen in
Matchstick Man) and creepy (as seen in
The Green Mile.
Nicholas Briggs (voice) as The Manhunters: A race of androids created by the Guardians and precursors to the Corps. However, they rebelled against their masters, but only a handful of them survived. They believe that the only way to maintain order was to eradicate all life in the universe, and swore to destroy the guardians and their replacements, the Green Lantern Corps.
Reason for Casting: The face might not be familiar, but the voice is. Briggs voices the Daleks and the Cybermen on the revived
Doctor Who series. If you combine both of the creatures he voiced, you get something similar to the Cybermen.
Eric Bana as Krona: Once a Oan scientist, Krona was obsessed with observing the origins of universe. He created a machine that allowed him to glimpse at the beginning of time, but it exploded and created the anti-matter universe. As a punishment for his actions, Krona was turned into pure energy by his fellow Oans and was forced to wander the cosmos. However, Krona was restored to his original form in the anti-matter universe and now swears revenged against the Guardians. Krona is immortal and posses psionic and powers and energy manipulation.
Reason for Casting: I based this casting choice off of Bana's performance as Nero in
Star Trek. He played a brilliant villain there and would give this role justice.
Christopher Eccleston as William Hand/The Black Hand: A criminal that was obsessed with the death and the dead, and is hinted to have necrophilic tendencies. He first used device that siphons the energy of a Green Lantern's power ring and fires energy blasts using that power. He later gain to absorb the life from living beings to recreate his lost hand.
Reason fro Casting: Eccleston is famously known for his role as the Ninth Doctor on
Doctor Who. He can play great villains, as seen in
28 Days Later, and gave a brilliantly creepy performance in
Shallow Grave.
Tobin Bell as Nekron: The embodiment of death, and the ruler of a region adjoining Hell that is simila to purgatory. He wishes to drain all life and emotion from the universe. Nekron can draw power from the souls and spirits of all who ever died and command them at his will.
Reason for Casting: Even though I'm not a big fan of the
Saw films, but Bell's played a memorable and creepy-as-hell villain in it. The role of Nekron was made for him.
