Green Lantern Sequel NOT Definite Say WB

THR have posted an update to their original story that claimed that a sequel to Martin Campbell's movie was in the works. It seems WB will be weighing up those numbers a bit more before moving forward..

THR's claims that a Green Lantern sequel was all go at WB may have been premature, as the site posted the following update..

While a top studio source told THR on Sunday that Warners was proceeding with plans for a follow-up film, a studio spokesman said Monday that no decision has been reached.

The reason that they haven't committed is of course Box Office. Green Lantern didn't do as well as expected and received a pretty tepid response from many critics and fans. If WB are going to move on a sequel they must first see what kind of total gross justifies one. Also, as THR report, even more money was spend on the first movie that you might think!..

Green Lantern had a budget well in excess of $200 million, according to industry sources, as well as an outsized marketing spend estimated at $100 million domestic and $75 million foreign. A source with ties to the studio says it is reasonable to assume that Warners has spent well over $400 million on the film--not unusual for a summer tentpole—making profitability a steep uphill climb.

The movie is still generating revenue overseas, but is not expected to exceed $270 Million in world wide gross. Will WB be able to get a sequel rolling based on this? Should they? maybe it's time a lesson was learned. They were so sure that they had a new cash cow on their hands that a script for a sequel was already being worked on before the first movie was even released. Shame they didn't spend more time making sure the launching pad for this potential franchise was up to scratch.

they should make a sequel to right the wrongs of the first film, but i wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a sequel.

thinking about it,i'd be surprised if we see any other dc characters apart from batman & superman.

they should give us a break from batman & give us some new heroes.

-the flash
-wonder woman
-captain marvel
-lobo

please anyone but more batman films.

green lantern world wide box office $118,389,477(box office mojo)

@ teabag

it has its moments but not enough of them, the stuff in space is good but thats it.

hal vs sinestro training session is the best scene.

when i went to see it i expected very little & whatever i came out with i saw as a bonus.

Surprising not very much and instead of focusing on a sequel they should have spent more time on the script for the first one, because the after credit scenes is one of the biggest cop out moment I have ever seen.

I knew that claim was far too premature, no business minded studio head would greenlight (no pun intended) a sequel to an expensive flop! Sorry to all the GL fans on the site who were "in your face"-ing it to the Marvel fans but the numbers are the only path that gets followed in movie business and GL simply aint done the numbers.

itbegins, yeah I agree. When a trade or a renowned movie site posts a story the majority take it as gospel but the truth is they are just as susceptible to false information as the rest of us.

Not surprising at all. Thought it was strange that they would go ahead with sequel when it is a clear money loser. Best case scenario is probably a reboot in 5 or 6 years. Unless it miraculously starts to make money(alot) overseas which doesn't look the case. Not even sure if DVD sales can help prospects of a sequel at this point. What a shame.

Im going to see it again. Even if you didnt like this one, you have to admit, Strong as Sinestro in a Sinestro Corp war sequel would be BADASS!

Maybe they should have added John Stewart, who was the Green Lantern for an entire generation of casual viewers of "Justice League".

Hate to say that "Challenge of the Superfriends", which featured Hal Jordan was WAAAAY too long ago.

don't trust WB, they said they would make a superman returns sequel and never did (thank goodness).

Not that many script are that awful before production begins. Usually meddling with the story AFTER the film has been greenlit are usually what hamstrings a film.

The studio might possibly have lost over $100 million dollars on this one film!! Is that even possible??

Honestly -was the film worth it?

It is a shame because Strong was a very good Sinestro and a sequel would have had potential to be much better. A weak story and Reynolds(not that I don't like his work) was not the right guy for Hal Jordan. He would have made a better Guy Gardner(maybe).

Until I see a WB rep saying (with an actual quote, unlike here) that there won't be a sequel, I don't care about articles like this.

It's definitely possible that the sequel comment was supposed to come out, but not yet. It's possible that _this_ was the damage control, and not that one.

I think it is probably safe to say that this will probably go the way of Superman Returns in that they will continue to say "...there may be a sequel.." until it has been so much time that it is more likely that there will be a reboot than a sequel.
SKOne

Depending on where the CGI assets exist, it's not entirely unreasonable to think that WB could make a sequel for 3/4 to 60% of the cost so they might as well use what they have for all they spent on it. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit and have already seen it a couple of times, but Warner needs a new director, good reviews and maybe to start the JLA universe next time to generate a profit on just the movie itself.

Damn. DC/WB ruined a potentially-great new CBM trilogy. We're probably not gonna see another "fresh" CBM from DC until after Batman 5 and Superman 3. So 2020 it is, then.

^ Agree with going with Flash.

Cheaper technology hasn't caught up with GL Corps gang fights.
