GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES Writer Reflects On The Show's Unexpected Cancellation (Exclusive)

Green Lantern: The Animated Series writer Jennifer Keene looks back at the show's cancellation, revealing whether she thinks the live-action movie played a role in its premature end. Read on for details...

Green Lantern: The Animated Series launched in 2012 from an impressive creative team made up of names like Bruce Timm, Giancarlo Volpe, Jim Krieg, Sam Liu, and Rick Morales. Unfortunately, being released in the wake of the critically panned live-action movie did the series no favours, and despite positive reviews, it was cancelled amidst poor toy sales after just one season made up of 26 episodes.

DC Showcase - Blue Beetle writer Jennifer Keene was among those who penned episodes of the show, and when we had her on the phone this week, we asked if she was disappointed by the cancellation.

"Oh, yes, we were all so disappointed. Oh my Gosh. [The series] got such great reviews and was so well-received, I didn’t see that cancellation coming," the writer admitted to us. "When it did, it was such a bummer. I would love for it to come back and would love them to revive it."

"That was such a fun show, too, because I got to go to the recording sessions. A lot of the times, the actors will record their lines individually, but that one we did like a radio show where all the actors were together at once," Keene continued. "We got to pitch jokes on the floor and see how they were landing in the recording session. That was really fun and would love to see it come back."

Green Lantern is a character who has remained on the shelf pretty much ever since, though he will take centre stage in an animated movie later this year titled Green Lantern: Beware My Power.

We had to ask Keene if she believes the movie starring Ryan Reynolds might have been detrimental to this animated series, and while she chose her words carefully, it's clear that its failings hurt the show. "I do think it was the shadow of the film. The film just didn’t do well. I blame the movie! [Laughs]"

Hopefully, Green Lantern can find redemption, even if there hasn't been much movement on any of the live-action projects we know to be in the works. It's probably too late for this series to be revived, but it would be no bad thing to enlist some of the same creatives if another is produced.

Be sure to check back here on Monday for our full Blue Beetle interview with Jennifer!

DC Showcase: Constantine - The House of Mystery arrives on Digital & Blu-ray on May 3.

Young Justice's most recent episode did right by GL: TAS. It was great to see.

@GhostDog - What did Young Justice do?
dracula
dracula - 4/22/2022, 12:55 PM
@KWilly - it continued the story

Razor showed up as a Blue Lantern as was teased at the end of Green Lantern TAS. They used the same designs and everything lined up with how it happened in the show. He is still looking for Aya

It was also written by the Green Lantern TAS creators

Wiseman says the show is canon adjacent, which makes sense cause there is some issues with timeline of events

@KWilly - brought some Lanterns back and confirmed that the series is "semi-canon" in the YJ universe. It continued the story from the show basically with Razor being a Blue lantern.

This show is SO GOOD! They really need to revive it and bring back the original creative team, it was such a shame when they cancelled it.

Come on Warner Brothers Discovery, do justice to the greatest Green Lantern and give Hal Jordan a great solo movie. He is instrumental to the Justice League, a founding member and his story opens up the DC Universe so much.

I'm glad we got a bit of closure in yesterday's Young Justice Phantoms. It felt like a love letter to GL: TAS

Yesterday's episode of Young Justice blew my mind. What a gift. I hope the overwhelmingly positive response opens up the door for discussions on reviving the series. This show NEEDS to come back. So much potential left on the table. Please let this be a sign of things to come.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - hopefully battle of the super sons does well enough that they do more cgi movies

If not a full revival, should at least do a movie

It didnr resolve anything other than conflict directly introduced in the episode, but thank you Greg for giving us another GLTAS adventure

Plus its was written by the creators so until a revival or movie continuation is made its the closest we can get to a real revival

I would love to see a second season of the green lantern animated series. it was a great series and is by far the best adaptation of that character.

It got cancelled because it had nothing to do with batman.

dracula
dracula - 4/22/2022, 3:39 PM
@Lokiwasright - batman does have more shows than any other comic character, but they did also cancel Beware The Batman (not even half as good as GL) which also only had 26 episodes

GLTAS was absolutely incredible. I hope they can do more with it although I'm loving the sound of the YJ stuff. I need to catch up on that show.
