"Green Lantern" Trailer In Depth Analysis

"Green Lantern" Trailer In Depth Analysis

The "Green Lantern" trailer has been around for a week or so now, and reactions have been mixed. Some say it's great and looks very true to the comics. While some say it's horrible and the CG looks ridiculous. The majority seem to take with the positive side of the argument, but let's take a closer look at the trailer to see why both sides say what they say...

First Watch The Trailer

First of all we see Hal Jordan played by Ryan Reynolds realize he's late for work while some Linkin Park metal music is playing in the background. Already the tone seems a bit off to me. It feels more like a Marvel movie more so Iron Man. I like Ryan Reynolds's attitude though even if he's given lackluster lines at the start of the trailer. We then see him go to work were we see Blake Lively who with only one line said in the entire thing so far seems like she's [frick]ing taking it as a joke. I mean she's horrible it makes me laugh just listening to her say it. No emotion was put into that single line. She has Keanu Reeves syndrome.

We see that Hal is a pilot in training and seems like he's doing a good job until something(we don't know what) forces him to deploy from his aircraft. By the way I just want to point out as soon as the airbag deploys it looks like a CG effect and if it is it looks just really bad it looks to...animated, but judge for yourself. We hear Hal talk about his failure and how somewhere over the rainbow there's hope for him, and who else to show up but Abin Sur, and I like the music in the background here it's Lonely Dusk by Methodic Doubt and I think it sets a different and more preferred mood than what the beginning of the trailer showed us....and we see Abin Sur who looks great not CG which I love, because it looks real and authentic.

Then the Warner Bros. & DC Comics logos appear "Dark Knight" style, as we then see Abin Sur's spaceship land and him dying as Hal holds the ring in his hand and Sur explains that he is the new Green Lantern, that the ring has "chose you". I like the idea of the chosen one and the hero's journey, at the start Hal is a Tony Stark type hound but without the money, but when this duty comes about he takes the role and changes himself. Now as Abin Sur tells him his duties to protect the galaxy and so on they show us all the other Lanterns on another planet, and shots of space and Hal flying. As this is going on we see many characters from the comics

Tomar Re:

Sinestro: (Only in Green Lantern Corp)

There is a very small glimpse of the Power Battery when Hal's in the Hummer.

Even though Hal Jordan has a power that can make him superior to any other male on the face of the earth he still gets punched out and beaten, but he uses the power of the ring and makes up whatever's in his mind and the ring can make that come true. Again we see another character from the comics

Hector Hammond: (Not mutated)

The concept of a "Green Lantern" is to be fearless, as Hal explains to Carrol Ferris (Blake Lively), and that, that's not what he is. I think that's a very well made decision to make Hal a dick at first, than make him serious but at the same time he's human and he's scared as anyone would. It makes his character more human even though the thing he posses isn't human. Again we see another character from the comics a very big character as well.

Kilowog:

Then in big letters the words...

IN OUR DARKEST HOUR

appear and once again in "Dark Knight" explosion type background style this time it's green instead of blue. Now we get Hector Hammond in his regular form which looks kinda silly becuase you know a guy with a 2 ton head isn't silly, but it looks good and I like how they changed a bit of the look while still keeping with the character from the comics.

As in any other trailer there's a montage of action scenes with voice over in the background by Blake Lively who still sounds diagnosed with Keanu Reeves syndrome. Here's some stills:

Again more taglines come up such as

THERE WILL BE LIGHT

It seems the formula with these comic book movie trailer (most of them) is show some of the hero's life before they become a hero. Then show when they become a hero *cut to* montage of scenes and a major catastrophe usually the attack of a villain and in "Green Lantern" they have an Aircraft Fair being crashed by maybe a villain Hector Hammond or Sinestro...

(By the way this is my favorite still of Hal Jordan)

This Is Said To Be A Small Glimpse Of Parallax:

and then........we finally see the transformation of Hal's suit....

I love the suit. i think it looks great yeah the CG might not look perfect but you have to understand the film is still not finished this can still be worked on until the film's release so from what i see it looks great. I am ok with the exclusion of the white gloves because honestly they would look silly they really would especially in CGI yeah green gloves work just fine for me. In the HD trailer if you look closely you see the suit breathing with Hal it's more biological than just a green suit. If anything this is one of the most comic accurate costume out of all the DC films.

But Hal's remarks are sort of stupid, but if I had the power to change myself into a green guardian protector of our galaxy and could fly and create things from my mind to a ring i would be exited as Hal seems to be so it's realistic in it's own right. The "Green Lantern" symbol and words appear and once again in "Dark Knight" style . Even the font is the same as "The Dark Knight's" Let's compare...

Yeah.....there similar, but they both look good on their own. I still don't understand why they didn't use the traditional GL logo, but thinking about it doing it like this makes the film look more serious than having a corny looking flashy logo.

The last few seconds are Hal Jordan reciting the Green Lantern oath:

"In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night"

All in all "Green Lantern" looks like it's going to be a very fun, good comic book film. not as good as "The Dark Knight", but still good. It's only the first trailer, but even that fro a first teaser trailer that was a lot of footage. Then again Green Lantern is a hard character to sell while put a trailer with just the Bat symbol for 2 minutes straight and people will be lining out the door. With the heart Ryan Reynolds seemed to have for the role at Comic-Con, and some great actors in this and a great director i think it'll be a combination of Iron Man, and Batman Begins, the fun, and action part of the film and the serious dramatic but still fun part of the film. Now i don't expect any breakthrough performances here, or a magnificent story with a lot of theme elements but i do expect a good take on one of my favorite and many others' favorite comic book character...

"Green Lantern" stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, and Temuera

Morrison & is directed by, Martin Cambell

Really good analysis! I totally agree with you! The linkin park music is actually Wolfmother I believe, not that its important. The film is going to be great. The CGI will only improve with age, like a fine wine, and this will arguably be one of the finest.

Really good article! Keep up the good work.

honestly the suit looks great when he's on oa and it looks natural but it just dosent look great when he's on earth but then again it might be done like that to prove that the costume is "otherwordly" but i think its going to be good, i will definitely check it out, i wont be 2 disappointed if it isnt that great not a GL fan

Good article! I agree with you on most points... I think I'm one of the few to like the overall tone. I believe out of context a lot of this stuff looks bad and often the finished product has different angles or takes for the same scene which work far better.
I also dig the close up of Green Lantern! Seems the CG is most complete in that shot, in fact I was wondering at one point if that mask was actually real versus the one we see in the transformation? Would make sense wouldn't it? Look at the difference in color tone, in that close-up it's much darker and feels more solid and thick. In the transformation sequence it looks very light-greenish and flat...

About Blake Lively's line:
It wasn't a single line but three pieces from a single longer line (or more than one line) put togheter for the trailer, that's probably why the line seems awkward.
So this trailer isn't nearly enough to judge her performace.

Linkin Park metal song? The [frick]? Haha. That song doesn't sound remotely like either of those descriptions.

I know it wasn't Linkin Park I was just desribing what it sounds like to me. I didn't know what it was until someone told me it was Wolfmother.

dude i respect your opinion and be leave that everyone should have one but seriously man you need to take some film appreciation class before you become a critic and some music class cause the music in the begin is more old school metal then linkin park new age rock i mean if you cant tell the difference the main one is it a guitar with a effect on it not electronic computer music, second how can you judge someone acting from one line out of context in a dam trailer thats just being assholic for no reason. just some tips for your future rundowns

Good read, the cgi doesn't look too bad for a movies that is supposedly only half done with post-production it should get better if i were to nit pick i would say the domino mask on Hal isn't quite right but that just from what i see... This should be Epic i agree its hard to sell the Green Lantern to the average moviegoer and if they want to succeed TDK & Iron Man style then they have to do a better job of getting the average non-GL fan.... Speaking to non-comic book fan they told me that it didn't catch there eye as much as Iron Man i told them to read the comic the Green Lantern story can be complex...Maybe they are putting Amanda Waller to test the market for a combine cinematic universe...

I fail to see the similarities between this and the Iron Man movies. But this was a great job, and the trailer looks epic. @_@

I know hardcore GL fans that are madly in love with this trailer.
