Warner CEO Says No Decision On Green Lantern 2 Yet; Movie "Did Not Live Up To Expectations"!

Despite recent talk of a darker and edgier sequel, Time Warner chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes has made it clear that no decision has yet been made on a follow up to Green Lantern after it fell short of their expectations...

When Green Lantern opened up, anticipation was at an all time high among fans, despite an onslaught of negative reviews in the days before that. Well, after opening up to a disappointing $52.6M in the US and even more bad reviews following that, the future of the franchise is now unclear, despite recent reports that they're moving ahead with another movie. Well, a sequel hasn't been ruled out just yet, but it's fate remains as up in the air as ever it seems! Here is an excerpt from the report over at The Hollywood Reporter.

Time Warner chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes was clear when asked on a conference call Wednesday how he felt about the box office performance of Green Lantern, the June release from the conglomerate's film studio that disappointed.

"It did not live up to expectations - fell fairly far short of those," Bewkes said. Still, he didn't rule out a sequel at this point, saying that he was not in a position to tell at this time. "We will be deciding that in due course," he said. Sources had previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. was not giving up on a sequel.

I enjoyed the movie but I didn't live up to my expectations either. If they do a sequel I am hoping they do it right and show the character the justice that he deserves.

Well, I think it would be way to soon to try settle on rebooting it. So definite sequel would be the way to go, I just think it would be hard to shake the tones that were set in the first one. And by tones I don't mean the mood of the film, but the things that caused people not to like it or perceive it was a successful film. Maybe having things take place mostly in outer space with more character development for some of the other Lanterns would be a step in the right direction.

a sequel will depend on if it gets its budget back.

Green Lantern deserves a sequel. It has so [frick]ing much potential it's insane. Get a sci-fi director, better script and keep Reynolds! Also get a different cgi house. Green Lantern should be approached like Star Wars, an epic space movie! Please make it happen!

Pleeeasse! Do what Marvel does, only better! It's such a shame to watch one of the most beloved and iconic characters in a movie that does not live up to it enormous expectation! Green Lantern deserved better! And so did Thor!

The writers must be stoned out of their minds. THey should've made a it true to the origins story. Desert, villain being Legion instead, or Atricious from Secret Origin. Geoff Johns [frick]ed up big time! Let the fan-boys make it. My dead sister could make it better! Such a waste of a potential great movie!

I agree F Ryan Reynolds. Either reboot or make Hal/Ryan a minor role in favor of Guy/John/Kyle/Sinestro.
But of course without a reboot none of that is likely to happen.
Maybe just focus the film on the awesome Sinestro/Strong- he was such a missed opportunity.

DC movies are going to hell in a hand basket if they don't find great directors like Christopher Nolan. Shame, because Martin Campbell directed a few good films. Of course, hiring the star of Gossip Girl won't do you any favors, but despite her rep on DListed, Blake Lively has the chance to be a great actress if she can get back to her adventrous roots (see The Private Lives of Pippa Lee). Same with Leighton Meester and the others.

Hell, I might do a Green Lantern fan cast next.

Green Lantern should've been Star Wars "A New Hope". The trilogy would've been so easy to make. Green Lantern has all the unique and intersting aspects of an incredible sci-fi epic. And it should've been as such. The fault lies with Campbell and the writers. The art direction was magnificent. Reynolds was Hal Jordan albeit a different one pre-90's. I wanna see Hal Jordan from before Geoff Johns run, the most iconic cosmic superhero of all time! That's who I want to see! Keep the cast, especially Reynolds and Strong, and get a new sfx company.
The villains were dumb. Emerald Dawn story-line or Secret Origin would've been fantastic but of course Emerald Dawn is the far superior one. Just imagine that!

An important aspect, if not the most important, is to get the right director! EdGross just released an article about "Captain America: 4 of 8 Lessons CBMs Can Learn From the Film" - THE DIRECTOR is essential. The vision and seeing it through is so essential it's baffeling they didn't do it here. Campbell should keep his fingers to action movies, not comicbookmovies about space. JJ Abrams would've done a great job, like Star Trek. James Cameron would've given me a seizure probably. Get JJ Abrams to write as well! Warner Brothers and DC Comics has arguably the greatest characters of all time, they deserve the best possible attention and execution on the big screen. Batman got Nolan, Superman got Snyder, now Green Lantern needs Abrams! I would cry tears of joy if this happened!

Green Lantern is about one man's journey into something much bigger than himself. And becoming something else entire.

@Berg - The writers should be ashamed for what they did! The movie smells of suits. WB should give DC more direction flow. Look at the animation, they don't really care there and DC Comics has the best animated movies because of that. They should hire in a true fan, a true director do pull this through!

Green Lantern must return and prove that it can be so much more than we think it already is!

Seriously, what expectations did they have? Besides us comic book nerds, the general public isn't going to know much about Green Lantern. And given the story they told, they gave a poor description of him and pretty much everything else. I was disappointed it wasn't better than what it was but I thought it was an entertaining movie, nothing more.

They said they needed to make the sequel darker and edgier if they did one, no, just make a good script and don't suck.

WB needs to learn to STAY THE F***K OUT of the way and let DC do their own job!!! WB doesn't know ANYTHING about the characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second HelaGood's comment! Stay true to the material and the true fans will come, and certainly some audience will come as well. A good story is a good story no matter how you look at it. It should be the first thing to fall into place, then a visionary director!

If it can make it to the $200 mil mark pre DVD, im thinking that combined with the merchandising, will greenlight a sequel.
Plus knowledge that the upcomng animated series will increase the fan base will help.
It still has many places in Europe as well as Japan to open up in. So it can pull in a few more bucks before DVD sales.
But of course it fell short of expectations. Its budget was absurdly high for what was delivered and the script was not that good.
