HBO Max Content Chief Says GREEN LANTERN Will Be A Step Up From CW Shows With Production Values

HBO Max launches today, and while it won't have any original DC content to begin with, we know that a Green Lantern series will be one of the "DC Max Originals" eventually debuting on the platform. Very little has been revealed about the show - or how it will tie into that long-rumoured Green Lantern Corps movie - but it sounds like it won't be just another Arrowverse-style series.

During a recent Business Insider interview, HBO Max Content Chief Kevin Reilly was asked whether fans can expect Green Lantern to have a "movie-like" budget, and it sounds like that will be the case.

"Greg [Berlanti, who is producing a Green Lantern series for Max] has done a lot of really quality DC fare for The CW. These will not be that," he confirms. "These will be next step up in production value. You can expect the highest level of cinematic production values on those shows, and that's the same for the projects we've announced with J.J. [Abrams]."

Quizzed about whether the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director actually pitched Justice League Dark to HBO Max, Reilly indicated that this was, in fact, the case. "Yes, he's always loved it. He always felt that there was a lot of opportunity there and an unexplored territory, and kind of a pond that he could play in exclusively."

It's certainly an unexpected property for Abrams to have chosen, but one which has been in the works for a long time now (unfortunately, we're clearly never going to see Guillermo del Toro's take).

Are you guys excited for these big budget Green Lantern and Justice League Dark TV shows?

Has he though?

@tmp3 - Say what you will about the CW shows but they are a coherent universe with multiple heroes. That's something the DC movies have failed to do.

Not all the shows are equally good and I for one wouldn't cry if Flash and Supergirl ended after the next seasons.

I hope they keep Legends of Tomorrow around for a few years as that show has gotten a lot better over the years.

Batwoman is just getting started and there are new Arrow and Superman shows coming soon.

@ChrisRed - Who cares about a coherent universe if the actual shows aren't any good? Some of you guys seem to prioritize world-building over actual story-telling.

@tmp3 - Green Lantern is effects heavy, I don't see it being TV friendly, unless it has a GOT or Mandalorian budget which I doubt.

@JustALurker - They said in the exact same interview to expect "the highest level of cinematic production values" from these shows, so they probably are

It's the soap-opera effect. If a story goes on long enough, it becomes more interesting to the people who follow it, even if it's not actually that great of a story.

And we're all subject to it (it's why so many damn people care about comicbook continuity when most of the individual stories are objectively pretty bad), so I don't say this as an insult.

@tmp3 - "Some of you guys seem to prioritize world-building over actual story-telling."

Ain't that the truth. CW shows are held to the lowest possible television standards. Just a whole lot of fanservice for teens and housewives and every now and then they'll throw a bone to CB fans.

@tmp3 - A lot of people must like the shows and their storytelling or the shows would be cancelled due to low ratings and not enough viewers.

The shows aren't perfect but neither are any of the DCEU movies so far.

@tmp3 - So I guess this is the HBO service's big seller, is it cannon to the movies or the CW?

@JustALurker - DC doesn't have any canon at this point, lol

@Spock0Clock - I can assure you when the CW's flash went for over 2 seasons I lost more and more interest as it kept going. I disagree with the notion that [Longer Stories = More Interesting/Engaging to the viewer]

This Green Lantern show was announced last October and there still isn't even a show-runner. What the [frick] have these guys been doing the last few months

@TheUnworthyThor - This show won't be out until 2025 or 2026 at this rate. They still need to get a show-runner, assemble a writer's room, get scripts in order, start casting, hire directors, roll cameras, and then edit & do VFX work for a year to a year and a half. The first half of this could have already been in motion if they'd have thought it was a good idea to hire an actual show-runner for one of the big shows you have in development, instead of not even announcing anything beyond a title.

Next step up from CW would be, what? Titans?

Don’t mess up Green Lantern again. I don’t want to have to whoop some ass but I’m willing. Hal Jordan is the best DC superhero and he deserves a lot better than that crappy ass movie and getting left out of the first ever Justice League movie.
