The GREEN LANTERN Series From HBO MAX Will Reportedly Have A TV-MA Rating

It seems the upcoming Green Lantern TV series from HBO Max will not be a show for the entire family to watch, at least according to this new rumor which also pegs the Dominators as key villains.

There's a number of upcoming and in-development DC project for HBO Max including Titans season 3, a new season of Young Justice, Doom Patrol season 3, Harley Quinn season 3, DC Super Hero High, Justice League Dark, Zack Snyder's Justice League, a Suicide Squad spinoff starring John Cena's Peacemaker, a prequel TV series for The Batman focusing on the GCPD, and an anthology drama series focusing on Adam Strange

However, the most anticipated new project might be the Green Lantern TV series which is said to span decades and focus on Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. Now, a new rumor seemingly sheds some info on the tone of the series and a key adversary.

It's being reported that the the Dominators, members of the alien race the Dominion, are set to antagonize the show's heroes. Introduced in Action Comics in 1967 by Jim Shooter and Curt Swan, the Dominators they first played a major role in DC Comics as the main evil-doers in the 1988 Invasion crossover from  Keith Giffen, Bill Mantlo and Todd McFarlane. The aliens threatened the Earth as they viewed the planet as a threat to the hierarchy of the universe due to an abnormal amount of individuals who possessed a metagene. It was this same storyline that served as inspiration for the 2016-17 Arrowverse crossover of the same name.

The rumor from The Direct also states that the live-action Green Lantern drama will have a TV-MA rating, which means this won't be a show for little kids. Of course, until we see footage, we're left to wonder whether the series will have a tone more similar to Titans and Doom Patrol or Watchmen.

With 2020 drawing to a close in the next few weeks, we move closer to the reported 2021 production start date for the series which is currently slated to premiere in 2022. HBO Max has already committed to a 10 one-hour episode first season

Why a Green Lantern TV-MA? Really? They should delve in the Fantasy/Sci-Fi aspect of GL...-_-

@cocaegelo - Half the DC shows on HBO Max are TV-MA, even the animated ones (Harley Quinn and Young Justice).

@Battabing - What does that have to do with anything? Those are all based on mature comics too, with the exception of Titans which wound up being unwatchable dog-shit, and Young Justice - which felt supremely edgy. Your incessant need to shield DC from any criticism defies all logic.

@Battabing - am surprised they are still making season HQ show, nobody watches that show.

@tmp3 - In the early 80s Titans was definately edgy amongst comics. A lot of things done then were quite taboo at the time which seem tame now.

Too bad none of the OG lanterns are involved

@BlackBeltJones - Alan Scott is THE OG GL, and Sinestro is OG for the Corps.

Outside of Guy throwing the occasional F bomb or a graphic depiction of Cruz's PTSD event, a TV MA rating seems a bit excessive.

I'm interested that this is the case for the GLC (but glad to know my man Guy won't be censored.) But the major news here is we should rest easy about JLD. If they're willing to go MA for freaking Green Lantern, we're definitely getting a pitch-dark, gory, profane horror-scape for Constantine and crew to take on.
