Benicio Del Toro On Joining The Cast Of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

The actor doesn't really divulge anything about his character, The Collector, but he does talk about how he feels to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and what he thought of the footage of GOTG that was screened at SDCC..

We exclusively revealed a while back that Benicio del Toro would be playing Taneleer Tivan aka "The Collector" in Marvel's upcoming space-set adventure Guardians Of The Galaxy, and of course this was confirmed over the weekend at SDCC. MTV caught up with the actor and asked him about his experience joining the ever growing MCU family. Del Toro seems delighted to be a part of it, and says he plans to immerse himself in the source material as much as possible so he can learn all there is to know about his character.

"I just love to get invited, you know? I'm glad I'm invited to be a part of this film. I'm sure Djimon [Hounsou] feels the same way. We're very lucky to be a part of this.

I think that clip that I saw was different for me than the other Marvel films, I loved it."

I want to learn [about] the comics as much as I can. That world of Marvel, it's as thick as the Bible and 'War and Peace' put together. So I don't know if I have the time to get as deep as I would like to, but I'll go in there. It's exciting."

such a great actor, i have been wanting to see this for a while.

like most people i still have my reservations about a talking tree and racoon on the screen....but im sure it will work .

@The Logan

i dont see why that would be important, the list of people you could hire would be extremely slim, and im sure good actors like to respect the source material....jus sayin bro haha

@TheLogan I'd kind of prefer if they keep signing actual actors over comic book fans. Ya know, cuz they can act. We don't need any Kevin Smiths.

Does Marvel automatically dump a stack of old comics on the actors once they're cast? Or is it up to the individual actor to do the research?

@Godzillafart

From what I heard and read, the Guardians of the Galaxy footage shown at Comic-con worked very well.

An celebrated Oscar winning actor agrees to be a villain in a comic book film = pure gravy.

Yeah, because a vast comic book knowledge is more important than acting skills, and there are most definitely so many great actors who happen to be comic book fans for studios to choose from, out there!

By the way ladies and gentlegeeks, a bit of trivia regarding The Usual Suspects - my favorite all time film.

The lineup scene which was embedded on this page was improvised. The reason the actors were laughing and having problems keeping a straight face was because Del Torro had been farting in the scene.

Oh, yeah...there's also no way for the actors recruited in CBM's to be supplied with enough source material for them to learn from. :)

Seriously, what kind of a statement is that?

I have no problem with them casting great actors who have never heard of there characters they are playing in a comicbook bc they can read get familiar with them BUT I DO HAVE A problem when a actor or actress is cast and the ignorant studio or director tells them to not read or learn about that characters so it won't interfere with there Vision .....SINGER

I don't see what the problem is with actors not reading comics.
Comics aren't exactly mainstream, you can't expect everyone to read them and know everything about the comics.

I'd rather an actor be honest that they haven't read comics, rather than bullsh*t actors who claim they're "comic fans" but you can tell they don't even read, let alone read comics.
