EDITORIAL: Why GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is In Great Hands

EDITORIAL: Why GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is In Great Hands

I would like to discuss the director of what I think will be the most epic movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hit the jump to hear my opinion, even though you'll be reading it.

As we all know, next year on the first of August, will be the release of the much anticipated film, "Guardians of the Galaxy." Considering this movie will be a complete change compared to what audiences are used to watching, the studio made the right choice choosing someone who professionally knows how to 'think outside the box.' I'm talking about James Gunn. He is unlike any other man in the business, and defines what it means to have individuality. With the gifts of an outstanding sense of passion and an incredibly twisted mind, the result is always classic in the best of ways. I want to discuss two of his best pieces of work, and some other topics as well.

The first piece I would like to bring up is the movie "Slither." I'd say it's a comedy-horror and its easily one of the best of its genre in my opinion. It was simply about a loving husband who becomes the host of an alien life form, and the residents of the little town become his minions. Obviously there are sub-plots and all that other jazz but the gist of what something creepy like that. The cast is great, the gore is intense, and it manages to make such disturbing moments into funny situations. Some of which, I think are hilarious. I'm not here to spoil it, but if you haven't seen it, I suggest you do.

The next movie is "Super." When I first saw this trailer not too long ago, I thought it was going to be just like "Kick-Ass." Oh my god, was I wrong. It's about a man who loses his wife to some drug dealer and decides to do what he thinks is right, dressing up as a vigilante and becoming a real crime fighter. Although, I should add that his motive for this was not to be a super-hero, but to fight evil in a physical fashion. I love this movie and I must've watched it six times within the first two weeks of my first view of it. Just like the other movie I previously went over, it has a great cast, intense gory action, and still manages to make these hardcore situations funny in they're own way. However, while it has similar qualities to the other movie, I personally think it has much more heart and emotion behind it. I connected with these characters on such a deep level, and it just captures you with it's dark and realistic story. Yes, it's a movie and movies tend to be false with how things work in real life, but I think this movie is as close as a realistic super-hero movie will ever be.

For either of these movies that I just reviewed, if you have not seen them and you have an open mind, then I suggest you watch them as soon as you can. Especially before "Guardians of the Galaxy" hits theaters, so that you can at least get an idea as to how this movie will express itself. He directed and wrote "Slither" and "Super," and the same goes for "Guardians." He did have two or three people assist with writing to "Guardians," which I think because Marvel just wanted someone possibly overlooking the project as a whole.

Some of the work he has done over the years includes:

- Screenplay of the 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" movie.

- Writer and director of the 1996 "Tromeo and Juliet" movie.

- Writer of the 2000 comedy "The Specials."

- Writer of the 2002 live-action "Scooby Doo" movie, and it's sequel.

Yes, he wrote the "Scooby Doo" movies and I was shocked to read that. Here's a quote I found on IMDB from Gunn regarding Scooby Doo, "With all the difficulties plaguing the world over the past year, isn't it about time we had a hero who tells kids it's okay to be afraid? Scooby's the greatest cartoon character ever. He isn't cute like Mickey, or smart like Bugs, or fearless like Woody and Buzz -- he's a talking dog who's more human than I am. It's his humanity and imperfections that make him special." (Source below)
Even talking about something as unusual as a character like Scooby, you can feel he has passion. I read a quote last week on this website as well, and he was just saying how grateful and thankful he was to work with Marvel and thanking everyone from the
"cast and the producers," to the "costumers and the stunties."

I don't think he's had a lot of big budget productions in his day. Now that Marvel took him under they're wing I'm sure with the finances they gave him, this movie will have every necessary movie element needed to stand out of the crowd today. He knows how to balance everything, keep it serious when it needs to be, and make light of a scene when it's appropriate. He knows that slow and steady wins the race, and I'm sure the fans will love what he has officially brought to the table. With all that being said, I love this site and god bless to everyone. Peace out!

I've been in the art department at Shepperton - and the art-concept stuff I saw all over the walls, coating the corridors and walls from head-to-toe....

Wow! - exciting stuff!. If Marvel can bring only half of that lot to the big screen, the film is going to be spectacular!.

You finish that pbs doc last night?

It was pretty good. Bookended with superman (as it should have been).
A little too much feminism and a ridiculous segment about obama.
But otherwise cool.

@batz11

Those 87 Twins were sure something.They went on a wild ride in the ALCS against Detroit and never looked back. While the 91 series was pure giddy bliss,the 87 one
was relief that somebody from Minnesota could win the big one.

That homer hankie luck almost rubbed off on the Vikings that year when they went as a wild card all the way to the NFC title game where butterfingers (Darrin Nelson) dropped that Wade Wilson pass on 4th down at the goal line.

I know AC ran a bad route,but Nelson will always be the goat for that game.

@StatenMan18 Ellen Page was great, from what I remember they cast her after writing the script, but as chance had it the script played into, and then dramatically against her image brilliantly, but hey they were all fantastic.

I struggle to put into words my anticipation for GOTG. strangely, everything I hear about it seems dreadful; Casting a wrestler? then casting Uhura, THEN Bradley Cooper! - each and every time I flinch at the news then realise "you'd only do this if you knew what you were doing!" - Gunn's got this! the whole idea of this film is ludicrous, so you can't approach it conservatively - it's going to be off it's tits and all the better for it. The Comic Con footage is just the tip of the iceberg!

@shadyginzo

Yeah they were all great improved liv Tyler and bacon too.. Lol even Nathan Fillion fit his role great too..

And yeah I feel yeah the cast may seem like a mismatch to some but like I said in the writing, if anyone can pull this off, it's gunn :)

Despite being excited for, Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm not a fan of Gunn'a work. I mean, sure, I still get a chuckle out of the Scooby Doo movies despite being bad movies. The only Gunn movie I like was Zack Snyder's directorial debut (arguably Snyder's best along side Watchmen), Dawn of the Dead. Slither was dumb as shit, Super was just causing me to lose brain cells and yeah. I have some faith in him as a writer and I love the passion, I just hope GOTG turns out good and the cast will be the best part outside of the fact it's Marvel Cosmic.
