GOTG: Michael Rooker On Yondu; "There’s Hope In This Character"

While chatting to Total Film about the third season of The Walking Dead, the fan-favorite actor also answered a few questions about his character in James Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy. He doesn't give much away, but there are a few interesting tidbits.

Michael Rooker has proven one of the toughest nuts to crack when it comes to getting any information out of him about his role in Marvel's upcoming space adventure, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and that continues in a recent interview with Total Film. Try as they might, they just can't get too much out of the former Walking Dead hard-case -- BUT, he does hint that his character Yondu might be more than just a straight-up villain in the movie. "There’s hope in this character," he reveals to the mag. "But the stuff going on… I can’t talk about it but… it’s challenging." Sounds like we might be in for another somewhat sympathetic bad guy. Rooker also talks about how long he has to spend in makeup, what it's been like to work with the cast and director, and how he interacts with his fans -- but he clams up again when asked what sort of powers and abilities we can expect to see from Yondu, suggesting only that he'll be a formidable physical pretense. "Y’know, most of the roles I play, just by it being who I am – normally they’re somewhat formidable individuals. That’s just sort of my look and my build. So we utilize that in almost everything I’ve done, and it’s the same in Guardians." More at the link below.

@SyamAgsa14 no Yondu found that Earth had beat him to his destination centuries before, using advanced star-drive engines, Astro set about to perform his reconnaissance mission of the planet, despite the fact that it was now obsolete. While performing his geophysical survey, Astro came across Yondu, who was in the midst of his ritual of manhood ordeal. Although Yondu tried to avoid contact with the outworlder, the planet-wide attack by the extraterrestrial Badoon brought the two men together.

Are you referring to the newest volume of Guardians? You do know the Guardians comics have existed long before Marvel made movies?

@OldGreg

You better take that back.

Cause if it where down between Rocket Racoon and Star Fox, he'd back hand that sumbitch across the galaxy.

Yondu was a hero in the old GOTG - I have a feeling he'll be either joining or helping if there's another movie.

It would be cool if Yondu does join GOTG. He is an original member.

I like that this race popped back up in the books. Getting the species set up for the movie.

The only time Yondu interacted with the team was during a "future-is-unraveling" story. It's hard to tell how much of that was lost to things being set right.

Yondu has always been a good guy in the comics.

His god Anthos was found to be Thanos in the comics (if you flip the letters around you can see thats all they did to differentiate the two names).

perhaps they intend on using his ties to Thanos somehow? Religion can make some people do some pretty crazy stuff

He´s blue, he brings hope..he belongs in the
Blue Lantern Corps:

"In fearful day, in raging night,

With strong hearts full, our souls ignite.

When all seems lost in the War of Light,

Look to the stars, for hope burns bright!"

I'm very excited about this movie but this design for Yondu looks like pure sh*te......They should have had him have a techno/tribal look... Some of the other make and costumes for this movie also look horrible... I hope the final result looks much better.

Also, this guy so far looks like a serious 100% miscast for this character. If he was going to wear a trench coat it would have looked better with cut off sleeves with somebody muscular. With a primitive/futuristic look...wear is the earring?
