GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Concept Art Reveals Wacky And Comic Accurate Rocket And Groot Designs
This very cool batch of Guardians of the Galaxy concept art features some very different takes on Rocket and Groot and even a design which may have informed the former's appearance in Avengers: Endgame...
In the Super Bowl TV spot for Avengers: Endgame, we caught a glimpse of Rocket wearing what looked an awful lot like his classic comic book costume. Now, in this Guardians of the Galaxy concept art - the majority of which has never been released online before now - we see a piece of artwork that may have provided the basis for that.
There are a lot of great designs here, though, both for Rocket Raccoon and his loveable pal, Groot.
Some are comic accurate and others are so eccentric and weird that it's almost impossible to imagine what they would look like on the big screen in a live-action setting, especially knowing the characters the way we do now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So, to check out these unused designs from the James Gunn movie, hit the "View List" button below.
When Vin Diesel was cast as Groot, the response wasn't at all positive but little could we have known what a great job the actor would end up doing as the sentient tree who speaks three words.
These alternate Groot designs are very weird and definitely a departure from the source material. However, it's easy enough to imagine them working and you can see what Marvel was going for.
Is it me, or does the Groot on the right look like, well, Old Man Groot? That would definitely be something interesting to explore somewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's distant future.
This is essentially the Groot we ended up seeing in Guardians of the Galaxy and it's fair to say that Marvel Studios and James Gunn did a great job of bringing the sentient tree to life on the big screen.
Is he a racoon or a badger? Either way, this is definitely a much different take on Rocket and would have been quite a departure from what fans were hoping for. Despite that, he does look kind of cool!
This design really plays up the cybernetic aspect of Rocket and while it has something of a steampunk aesthetic to it, it's hard to imagine this version of Rocket fitting into the franchise as we know it.
This is basically Rocket's final design and it's one Marvel Studios hasn't felt the need to change since. In Avengers: Endgame, he'll join Earth's Mightiest Heroes and that's going to be a lot of fun to see.
If you look closely at this costume and the one in the Avengers: Endgame TV spot, the similarities are clear to see (right down to where the holsters are) so the Russos may have dug this one up to use as a reference for the comic accurate get up Rocket can be seen wearing in the superhero ensemble.
