It was revealed yesterday that actress Karen Gillan would be
reprising her role as Nebula in the next two
Avengers films, a move that makes sense, considering her father,
Thanos, will act as the main antagonist. However, before she unites with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, we'll be seeing Nebula carve out a place with the
Guardians of the Galaxy in their upcoming sequel this May.
While we still don't know what causes the antagonistic Nebula to join the team of misfits, Gillan told The Wrap that audiences will get more background on her troubled relationship with her father and her sister, Gamora (Zoe Saldana).
“What I love about the second movie for Nebula in particular is that we get — We know that she’s a pretty angry woman with some daddy issues. [But] in the second movie, we’re going to start to see how much pain her father actually caused her, and we’re going to delve right into the relationship with her sister Gamora.”
The first film provided some hints regarding Nebula's resentment, but mainly cast the character as an enforcer for Ronan the Accuser. According to Gillan,
Vol. 2 will add a sympathetic layer to the character that she was very excited to explore.
“I think we might even feel a tinge of sympathy towards Nebula this time, because we really start to see the emotional crack in her character. I was just allowed to completely explore that and take it to a completely different dimension with her. I was really happy about that.”
Gillan also humorously revealed that she didn't need to shave her entire head for the role this time, something she was quite thankful for.
“I shaved half of my head this time, but they took away the butt — like, the underneath-half of my hair, and then left the top part. That was the best gift ever.”
