TOP 5 STORIES FOR THE WEEK ENDING 08/30/2013

While Marvel Studios dropped some pretty big news this week - confirming Bradley Cooper for the role of Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy and announcing James Spader as the voice of Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the news that Ben Affleck would play Batman in Superman vs Batman was still this week's most buzzed about topic. Judging by fan reaction, Whedon has his work cut out in convincing comic book readers and casual fans alike that Ultron, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are going to meld with the existing Avengers roster in dynamic fashion.

The second most talked about topic is actually one that's FALSE. Bryan Cranston has not signed up to play Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel. Sometimes the internet goes into a frenzy for hits and runs with the most unbelievable and uncredited stories imaginable as click-bait. I ask fans to keep in mind that the source of the rumor has also stated that Cranston would not be Luthor and that Mark Strong was the front-runner, then that Strong would return as Sinestro (just so they've covered all bases), the actor playing Batman would be in his 30's, Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin screen tested for the role and a bunch of other malarkey that leaves me surprised anyone would believe anything originating there. Cranston has not been cast in the role, yet. Besides, how often do the names you first hear about actually end up winning the role?

Another rumor on the Star Wars front names Magic Mike's Alex Pettyfer and Peter Pan's Rachel Hurd-Wood as possible contenders for Episode VII roles. These remain rumors for now but the internet scuttlebutt is that official Star Wars casting news is coming very, very soon.

Over in Japan, director Zack Snyder was on hand for the premiere of Man of Steel. He talked about the amount of destruction in the film and revealed that he made his decision after examining various myths and legends in countries around the world.

JUST MISSED THE CUT: The Batfleck news dropped last week but the media was quick to solicit responses from anyone even moderately tied to the news. Matt Damon, Justin Timberlake and Michael Keaton were but a few of the celebrities asked about Affleck donning the Bat cowl. Game of Thrones fans, it seems that actor Michiel Huisman is not playing a new character, he's replacing Ed Skrein as Khalessi love-interest Daario. Over on the animation front, a new still was debuted from Justice League: War which featured Wonder Woman in a new outfit that seems to please fans.

Whether you guys agree with these castings or not you are going to see the movie. So why hate on it so much? Perhaps we can reserve judgement until it comes out?

And I know its fun to do this shit. That is why we are here, to discuss and voice our displeasure's or what have you. I get that. But calling a movie a "flop" or a "dead franchise" this early is just so redundant.

@ MisterNiceGuy

The only people that complain like little bitches is Marvelites and DC Fanboys. Marvelites will complain about Ben being cast as Bats but as soon as Spader and Cooper were announced all hail Marvel. DC Fanboys are worse because they attack DC/WB non stop giving $hit about casting etc.... WB does a great job casting starting with Michael Keaton, Heath Ledger, Henry Cavill, and Anne Hathaway.

@JoeMomma29, well I hate these "ites". I dont even like to consider myself a fanboy anymore because of the way these assholes act.

Hmmm I put Marvelites and DC Fanboys are DC Trollnites and Nolanites all rolled into one.

I disagree with you on Anne she was awesome maybe not the best but to me they hit a homerun with her. And there are now two movies where I like Anne Hathaway in Dark Knight and Devil wears Prada.

@MAC, I agree. TDKR was an all around mess when it came to character development and connecting with ANY characters. I wouldn't blame any actors though. Just seemed like lazy writing to me IMO

@MisterNiceGuy

I don't think Nolan really wanted to do TDKR to be honest. His heart just wasn't in it. At least that's the way I saw it.

@ SuperCat

That makes you a normal fan like the rest of us. Though each person tends to lean a little bit more to one franchise than the other. Mine happens to be DC due to Batman and the JL. Though I do have a sweet spot for Spidey thanks to Mr. McFarlane. When I saw this cover for the first time I was just amazed.

@MisterNiceGuy Do you know what character development is? Why do you think TDKR was "a mess" when it comes to that? I only ask because your statement was rather shocking to me, because TDKR is easily the most character-driven CBM ever made. Romance is a whole different story, though. Bruce/Selina's relationship went through clear phases, but it wasn't the main point of the movie. I was shocked their relationship was explored as much as it was. Way more than Bruce/Rachel in either of the previous 2 Batman movies, anyway.

And in my opinion one of the best series ever. I still pull these out of my collection to read these.

i liked Tdkr, but it is the weakest of the trilogy for me, it has a few plotholes, a rushed written romance with bruce and selina , the twist was obvious, i id not like how bane was taken out, the whole brcue being punched in the back to be fixed was weird, but i was a fantastic emotional experience imo, it was a very ambitious film which i complement nolan and goyer for doing, my favorite is batman begins still
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 9/1/2013, 9:27 AM
@MisterNiceGuy You are correct about TDKR poor character development.
In TDKR characters suffered here and there but that isn't character development.
Bane's motivations were never explained in a plausible way. To follow Talia and agree to "fulfill Ra's destiny" was a bit absurd when he was expelled by Ra's.

Talia hates Bruce so intensely that she dedicated her life to destroying him. But she has sex with him for no reason AFTER she already has taken the company and has no further use for him.

Bruce quits being Batman and becomes a cripple after 1 year and has so little inner strength, that he sulks as a lethargic quitter in his Mansion those 8 years because Rachel was killed. Finally Bruce's injuries just vanish and he Returns as a weak, imbecile Batman and gets beaten, stripped, crippled again, healed with back punch, Returns to get beaten some more, clumsily comes out on top, quits again.

Selina was the evil criminal that is totally good inside. She exhibited not one characteristic of a criminal in the film other than robbing Wayne because Daggett wanted her to. Why was she a criminal in the 1st place? Why was she attracted to Wayne so intensely that she turned from her life as good-criminal to Wayne's sidekick? At what point in her 15 minutes of total time with Wayne did she become attracted to him? Let alone fall in love with him?
Her role was written so poorly I would consider it a very rough draft that never connected the dots.

Alfred quits helping Bruce because he doesnt want to see him die. So if you think someone is suicidal your best move is to desert them?

Things happened to characters in TDKR but character development never happened in TDKR to any character.

[frick] this. Bryan Cranston would've sucked as Luthor, way too old. Save his liver spotted ass for Commissioner Gordon. Plus Bradley Cooper's voice had better be different as [frick] for Rocket and to top it off we get a rumor that Tween-Idol Who-Gives-A-[frick] is screen testing for Star Wars?

i think i have enjoyed the superhero films for the past two years because i have had no expectation for them, i look forward to them and i enjoy them , thats why i am concerned for guardians and Age of Ultron because i am excited for those two and dont want them to dissapoint
MisterNiceGuy
MisterNiceGuy - 9/1/2013, 10:01 AM
Nothing about TDKR got me invested in the characters or story. In fact most of the characters were annoying to me. I find myself not caring about the outcome at all which is the complete opposite of how I usually feel about Nolan films.

I dont mind that Cooper is Rocket Raccoon. At first i was shocked and a little let down cause i love Rocket Raccoon but i have hope that the actor could bring something new to the character in terms of voice acting.

Spader as Ultron is just spot on.

I have yet to say anything about Affleck as Batman, my opinion is that Warner Bros./D.C. just went a little too "ham" with Affleck being involved. Affleck DIRECTING it would have been MUCH,MUCH,MUCH more BADASS. Will Affleck eventually co-direct or co-write, that's the question. I think they should have gotten someone else as Batman and let Affleck direct or just co-direct if Snyder would have gotten all sour about it.
