6 Most Likely Villains Who Will Appear In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is likely heading our way in 2020, but who is the best possible candidate for the team to battle? We've rounded up six of the most likely possibilities for the movie!

People frequently seem to claim that Marvel Studios has something of a villain problem, and while it's true that Ronan the Accuser probably wasn't their best effort back in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, the recently released sequel definitely made things right with both Ego the Living Planet and Ayesha.

While Vol. 2 did seemingly spell out who will be taking on the team a few years from now, them being the threequel's only villains seems highly unlikely, hence why we've decided to take a look at the six most likely candidates for Vol. 3's real big bad. Clues have been dropped about some and others would just be downright incredible to see on the big screen, but the suggestions here may surprise you.

So, click through the list below to find the six villains we think stand the greatest chance of showing up in some form when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters roughly three years or so from now.

6. Ultron

I loved James Spader's take on Ultron in the last Avengers movie, and while Joss Whedon may have pretty definitively killed him off, comic book fans know that this villainous android always finds a way to survive. Just like in those, it could be explained in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that his consciousness was thrown into outer space after his destruction at the hands of The Vision and Marvel could easily make it so that he's bonded with the Phalanx (a techno-organic race that spreads through living creatures) by the time we catch up with him here.

That gives Star-Lord and his team some disposable baddies to take on, while the new life that's breathed into Ultron here could set him up as a major player in the Marvel Cosmic Universe moving forward in Phase 4. If his reemergence ultimately helps bring the Guardians back together with The Avengers, that would be even better, and Gunn using Ultron here would be a smart move for this movie and beyond.

5. Annihilus

If Marvel can get Ego the Living Planet from Fox, I'm confident that Kevin Feige will be able to talk them into handing over Annihilus for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After spending decades as a foe of the Fantastic Four, the villain created an Annihilation Wave and set his sights on taking over the universe. That led to him crossing paths with everyone from Silver Surfer to Drax and Nova and ultimately led to the formation of the current iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

If that doesn't sound like an amazing movie to you, you a) need to read Annihilation and b) must be crazy. This had tonnes of potential, and while it would be nice to see this story play out over several movies, I'm confident that James Gunn could condense it into one epic adventure for the Guardians. Annihilus is being wasted by Fox, but by bringing him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be just what the villain needs to stand out and make a name for himself when he goes to war with Star-Lord and his crew.

4. Korvac

Korvac may not be the biggest name featured here, but there's no denying that he's a character with loads of potential. To give you a brief rundown of his history, the villain hails from the 31st century and betrayed humanity to Badoon invaders to became an enemy of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Gaining untold power from the Worldship of Galactus, he then travelled back in time to become an enemy of the Avengers as well as a threat to the entire universe.

That was a story told in the epic Korvac Saga, and while it's probably already obvious to you that his history would have to be condensed and changed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there's no getting around the fact that he could make for a great foil to the Guardians on the big screen. James Gunn is talented enough to take Korvac and make him into an interesting and memorable presence, so while you may not be that excited by his name, don't underestimate the filmmaker's ability to turn this guy into an A-Lister.

3. Supreme Intelligence

Guardians of the Galaxy introduced us to Ronan the Accuser and made mention of the Kree, but that alien race is one we've yet to fully explore in this franchise. The Kree Supreme Intelligence is the collective of the greatest Kree minds in history and rules over their society and it's easy to imagine the Guardians doing something to upset it! Even if it just makes a cameo appearance, that would make for an awesome visual, but Star-Lord and company taking Ronan down could pose a problem for this villain.

The Supreme Intelligence's sole purpose is to genetically improve the Kree race, after generations of being at a standstill, so it's possible he was on board with Ronan's attempts to restore them to glory and it would certainly complicate matters for the team if the whole Kree empire is after them. Bringing this race to the forefront also potentially opens the door to the Skrulls showing up elsewhere and us finally getting a Kree/Skrull War movie featuring The Avengers and Guardians.

2. Galactus

Is this wishful thinking on our part? Probably. However, in recent years, the relationship between Marvel and Fox has improved greatly and the epic failure of 2015's Fantastic Four reboot may very well have resulted in the rights of those characters returning home just as they did for the likes of Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and The Punisher. With that in mind, these two icons showing up is entirely possible and could set the stage for what's to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.

After all, who better than Galactus and the Silver Surfer to once again bring together The Avengers and Guardians for a team-up? The world eating bad guy has too much potential to be left on a shelf at Fox's headquarters and Vol. 3 could even conclude with the apparent demise of the team at the hands of Galactus. James Gunn has, after all, said that the threequel will bring their story to an end and that would be a pretty permanent one, alright!

1. Adam Warlock

Depending on whether or not you're not familiar with the source material, you may be confused as to the significance of that after-credits scene with Ayesha talking about creating a being called "Adam" to destroy the Guardians. While his origin story is clearly going to be different to his comic book counterpart, Adam Warlock showing up is now pretty much a guarantee and he'll no doubt go to war with Star-Lord and company before seeing the error of his ways and joining the team.

That should be a fun story arc, though it is somewhat disappointing that Adam isn't going to be part of Avengers: Infinity War given his storied history with Thanos. Even so, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could still set him up as a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and assuming Earth's Mightiest Heroes once again face a cosmic threat somewhere down the line, he'll no doubt wind up coming into play there in a significant way.

Which of these villains would you most like to see show up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Have we missed any other worthy candidates? As always, share your thoughts in the comments section.

Hopefully they get someone good. Ego was definitely one of the stronger MCU villains. It would be great if they could match or top him.

@MrDandy - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 felt like a true sequel. Which is why it worked so well. The general audience didn't need to watch Civil War or Doctor Strange to understand what was going on. It was a direct sequel to Vol 1. And I loved it!

Vol 3 should focus solely on The Sovereign and Adam Warlock. I feel like there is enough character development with the Ravagers I would love to learn more about Ayesha and her overall agenda and the 'experiments' she was talking about.

@JoeMomma29 - Speaking as someone who DOES think Diane Lane just slipped up, her "clarifying" her answer doesn't really prove anything. Any actor would be forced to backpedal on a comment like that.
