James Gunn Has Announced That GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Will Be Released On 4K Ultra HD

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 director James Gunn has taken to Facebook to announced that the block-busting Marvel sequel will be released on 4K Ultra HD when it hits home release next month.

This will be the first time a Marvel/Disney flick will receive its initial release in this format.

Though Marvel hasn't made the film's home release date official yet, a recent Target listing did suggest that it should be with us on August 22. However, as Gunn points out in his post below, it's always better to wait for confirmation!

Interesting to see if these replace the Bluray 3D Editions or if they are separate, I usually go 3D because they are the better quality cases and have slips but I'd be down for the 4K versions to be the new premium sku

@Ha1frican - They will 100% replace the 3D ones. After The Avengers all of the Marvel films before Doctor Strange released as a 3D + Bluray + Digital HD copy combo pack. Doctor Strange and Civil War released back to the Bluray + DVD + Digital HD combo pack.

The sales of 3D blurays have decreased so much that Target and Walmarts sometimes sell the 3D blurays of various films for $5 to $15.

4K is on the rise. But 4K bluray players are over $99.99 so until 4K bluray players go down I don't see 4K dethroning regular bluray sales anytime soon. But 3D is pretty much dead.

@SonOfAGif - I was looking at new TVs recently and it's hard to find many 3D TVs while 4K TVs are all over. 3D TV and films were proven to be a gimmick for the home market so the TV manufacturers have now gone to higher resolutions and Smart TVs, where the markets are stronger. Within the next 10 years, I wouldn't be surprised to see 4K format discs to become just as common as Blu-ray discs.

Don't have a 4K Bluray player but i do have a 4K TV and PS4 Pro, so hopefully the movie is released digitally in 4K, does that happen?

@Chameleon - Google Play currently has rentals or purchases in 4K but the only way to view them is with a Chromecast Ultra.

So there are 4K digital releases but thanks to the limits of 4K only certain platforms are releasing them.

I'm a complete noob with this stuff, so if I were to buy a Blu-Ray copy, would it itself be in ultra 4k, come with an ultra 4k copy, or do I have to actively seek out a case that says "Ultra 4k"?

@ScarletWarlock - Bluray is 1080p resolution. 4K is in 4K resolution. You need a 4K tv + a 4K bluray player + a 4K film to view true 4K content.

A normal bluray in a 4K bluray player will only display in 1080p resolution.

Well, 4K is still a long way to be standard I guess.

I mean, I would have to buy a new TV, new player etc. we're not there yet;

@ODanil - This is for those with 4K equipment. James Gunn even said this will be the first Disney 4K release. So that tells me Disney has been very very hesitent to release 4K content because as you said it isn't a standard. Hell major sporting events aren't being shot in 4K yet neither.

I don't know if I am surprised or not this is the weakest of CBM so far in 2017.
On one hand I hold Gunn high up their for having a Gurley unique voice that was able to break free of the grip of Mickey and the gang...
...on the other hand...
Sequel Blues...and just a underwhelming narrative for the sequel.

@IronGenesis - if GOTG2 is the weakest CBM this year them this is a damn good year

@auditore - maybe an embarrassment of riches...but after the first "poop" joke i was ready to bail.
