GOTG VOL. 3: Kevin Feige Suggests That We're Going To Be Waiting A LONG Time For The Threequel

We knew that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was on hold following James Gunn's firing, but if an update from Kevin Feige is any indication, we're going to be waiting even longer than we initially thought.

After Disney made the decision to fire James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel Studios announced that the movie had been put on hold until a new director could be brought in to replace him.

That was back in August of last year and we haven't had any solid updates since, and now it looks like we know why.

While chatting to Collider, Kevin Feige revealed that GOTG Vol. 3 is still very much on hold, and suggested that there's been very little movement at all on the movie as the studio has been focusing on other projects.

"I mean, when it was pushed back, it was pushed back. Meaning the release date, because it’s not coming out—although we’ve never announced a release date actually, but it was gonna happen sooner rather than later, initially of course. Outside of knowing that we’re gonna use [James Gunn’s] draft, [we have] been focusing on other projects.”

As Feige reiterates, no official release date for GOTG Vol. 3 had been announced, and it's clear that whatever tentative plans were in place have now been scrapped.

Is there a chance that the movie could be shelved for good? We'll just have to wait and see, but we reckon those intergalactic A-holes will definitely reassemble for another adventure... eventually!

Oh well, part 2 was pretty vacuous and we were all Justin held hostage to see James Gunn work out his daddy issues on screen. We just got the Guardians in Infinity War anyway, no one is starving for any of these characters, they were all in IW and will I’m sure all be in endgame

@Subtlespammer24 - Agree, even after seeing GOTG 2 it didn't wow me enough to want a sequel asap. It never felt like it was leading towards something big or emotional either, so replacing Gunn wasn't even the issue. Problem why they are really delaying it is to let the politics die down.

GOTG 2 was like AOU, a mixed bag & tone. I'm sure Endgame will wrap up the Guardians regardless if Vol. 3 ever gets made.

Good job Disney!!! Other studios, take note- this is how you bring a successful and critically acclaimed franchise that has made 1.5 billion dollars to a grinding halt.

Also, Feige isn't entirely correct saying that no release date had been attached. James Gunn had said when the film would be released. And we know that the early stages of production were just being prepared when they fired Gunn. Yes, Marvel Studios had never officially announced a release date, but James Gunn had.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Because of Guardians of the Galaxy? They have the lowest selling merchandise of all of the MCU. Marvel has a power house with Black Panther, Spiderman, and now soon to be Captain Marvel. Trust me when I say Guardians of the Galaxy isn't moving mountains for the MCU.

@SonOfAGif - Where are you getting that they don't sell merchandise? There have been a ton of Groot shirts, toys, funko pops, dancing groots, groot trucks, groot chia pets, etc.

Something tells me Ant-Man and Doctor Strange stuff sells less...

Well at least we'll get it eventually... still way to go Disney.

I imagine Zoe Saldana is busy with Avatar, Bautista has Dune in the next few months, and Pratt has Jurassic World. When all of that clears up then it makes sense to revisit Guardians of the Galaxy. I do think that the best choice for director is still Taika Waititi. He knows Marvel and has a style that is the most closely similar to James Gunn.

@Forthas - Taika has made it perfectly clear that he won't touch this film. Also, I kind of think Zoe Saldana was done with Gamora after Endgame, based on what she said in the past.

@Forthas - Waititi will never do it. Put an end to that deluded wish.

No way. Who could have possibly expected that things might not go too smoothly after Disney deliberately derailed the project, and derailed it good?

Hey, Horn and Iger?!
